Hi Tom, You need to strip both panels down to bare metal before you start to weld, or your weld will be contaminated. Afterward wire-wheeling away the paint you need to wipe both sides with panel wipe or alcohol several times then you weld welds will be much stronger, if you leave a one mill gap between the panels when welding that way the panels will not warp as much. Cool each weld with compressed air, that will also help to eliminate panel warping,take your time, it's not a race. In short when welding cleanliness is very important, and using the proper gap, and compressed air is the difference between a crap job and a professional job. Instead of doing what your doing do a single tack , move three inches and do another tack move three more inches and so on and so on then go between the previous welds until you have the complete job done.
