    Great to see you back Paul, and with some exciting plans for your new layout. I use railmodeller pro on my Mac and would be more than happy to help out with fine tuning your plans. Cheers, Julian

      Ah, you are a star Julian, that is very kind, as quite a lot of this plan is jumbled between layers despite my best efforts lol. Also, it's a hash mix between flex and setrack, and some or more are not connected. Now knowing all of that, feel free to walk away lol. Id love to get a working file and any genesis version making things even better, cheers as always chum

      Paul- excellent news you’ve found a sizeable space for a new layout and great that Julian’s offering to help with its planning. There is much to learn from his own multi-level layout design in a similarly constricted space.
      One thing which worries me about your designs so far, especially V2, is the tight curves and especially the reverse curve south of the MPD on the window end. Limiting the centre walkway to 2’ also feels very tight.
      Have you thought about a ‘Figure of 8’ layout (similar in style to Julian’s) where the line(s) cross over themselves at the bend in the room? The downside is it presents another duck-under, unless you want yet more headaches with hinged lifting sections, but you would gain more sweeping curves and smoother running. By making the straight section non-scenic alongside the access to the weathering room you could also then have a wider board backing onto wall ‘M’.
      Anyway, looking forward to seeing how this develops.

      @@Teesbrough Thank you, Will, I hope Julian is well prepared lol. The curves are tight no question there. I will let Julian see your message, as I am open to any and all suggestions to get the best options out there, cheers Will.

    A good future hint, via Charlie Bishop ( Chadwick ) is a "walk in", not a "duck under" control area.

    • @Sandlingjunction
      @Sandlingjunction  ปีที่แล้ว

      yes true of course, but I do not have that sort of room available, in this layout sadly.

    I have found as I get older that any layout you have to climb under becomes irksome very quickly, so for my penny's worth I'd have a loop at either end allowing walk in access to all of the layout making playing trains or just mucking around with the layout a much more pleasant experience.

    General comments Paul. I’d be thinking of gradients and incorporating more than one level. My favourite layouts have interest in three dimensions, Neville Grove for example. I know I go on about it, but I’d definitely be thinking along the lines (sorry) of less is more. Zen approach. Also, think of some fiddle sidings so that you can easily store whole trains, cutting the need to faff. All the best, Nigel.

    Great to see an update on your plans Paul. That’s a great space with loads of potential. Think about whether you can get enough elevation to go down to storage tracks on a lower level? A helix would take up to much space but the length you have around the outside could maybe work. Take care and li look forward to seeing your progress, all in good time though, keep it to your schedule, not TH-cam’s!

    Hi Paul great to see you back. Your comment that you do not wish to overcrowd your new layout is valid, the old saying "Less is more" rings true. What ever plan you decide on it needs to have a combination of continuous running and the ability to do very shunting operations, because shunting can give you lots of enjoyment. Another thing to consider is your storage tracks, they need to be able to hold the longest train you wish to run. I will look forward to your further progress. Cheers Greg 🚝

    Paul great to see you back ,one massive advantage i see ,you are in the house not in a cold workshop that will make a massive difference to your layout , Keep your layout as simple as possible maybe two running loops a branch line or two and a simple shunting / tdm yard with plenty of sceneary countryside and urban as i think your artist back ground you should be up there with the best ,depending what era you will model maybe a heritage line ........................tony

    Good to see you back, you came onto the scene just as I started to show an interest with model railroads, so I followed you through your ups and down and always appreciated your honesty and integrity. I’ve just embarked on an UK O gauge project, based on a semi imaginary branch line through rural Herefordshire. My philosophy has been to keep a simple single branch line loosely based on a journey through 3 stations, Kingsland, Pembridge and Titley, but where ultimately the scenery will be the star and the trains, albeit important, play an almost secondary role. Anyway, look forward to watching your progress, you’re a great modeller and the break has probably done you the world of good.

    I can't offer any suggestions, but I can say that whilst the shape of the room is unsuitable for a bedroom, I think it's going to make for a very interesting layout. More challenging to build the base yes, but the shape is going to offer some very interesting aspects indeed. I wish you the best of luck with it, and look forward to following the progress!

    You cant' get away from mounting point motors under fixed boards (although peco twistlock makes it easy to change them) but you can wire all power, points, lights etc, with long flying leads (only max 2ft in your case) then make the bus and tee connections at the edge of the boards. Consider 2x4in plastic trunking as a method to hide it all and mount just under the edge or on the side.

    Hi Paul - Really good to see you back mate. As there is no longer a junction that I am aware of I would simply change it to Sandling Station.
    I think I have already said that I was totally gutted when you took down your layout in the garage. What a fantastic space you had but I did notice how much you had to bundle up during the cold days and that only detracts from enjoying the layout in my books. In your new room you will not have that problem. Oh and I totally understand your reasons for the change Paul.
    I absolutely hated the new room it was going into. With modelling in oo it gave you no room whatsoever, that's why I am a n gauger lol.
    I am unable to get my head around any PC track planning so with me its all pencil and paper.
    You have a marvellous wife John, one she comes up with this idea and secondly she allows you to use the room, very much like mine except I am in the loft.
    I think the sketch plan is brilliant. You will not have the long runs anymore but we all have to make sacrifices somewhere I guess.
    Three issues with that room, the narrow gap in the middle and two doorways. Personally the main door into the room I would turn round so that it opens into the hallway, not a big problem. I would also turn it into a Dutch door. Again not a big job, just two extra hinges. That way you do not feel enclosed and anyone walking by can look in.
    Do you really need a door into your weathering room? That way you can make full use of that area with jut two simple lift out sections. Just an idea and I am only going by what I can see on my screen.
    It looks like you have a branch line that goes over the mainline, do you have enough room for a decent. Personally I would not bother with the branch line or the tunnels, that way you get to see the mainline track all the time.
    Anyhoo RULE 1 comes into force and whatever you do John it will be fantastic. Just throwing a few ideas in there as you asked.
    Regards Chris

    • @Sandlingjunction
      @Sandlingjunction  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Chris, lots of ideas about the main door is going, good thought on two lift-outs, but the concern is airbrushing and overspray particles settling on the stock. maybe I am being over-cautious here. I will see if that idea is viable cheers to you , Paul

    Great to see Mrs Apps has got you going again. 😉
    I have to admit that I'm finding it a bit difficult to align your layout plan in my mind to the spaces you showed us. I presume that little entrance hallway is sacrosanct and/or the walls are structural?
    My first thought from the space was for an end-to-end layout, not least to avoid crawling under to get into the room. But you'd not be able to sit back and just watch the trains.
    If I'm reading the plan right, you have two stations, one either side of the central space. I'd ask myself if I really needed both stations as that would then let you watch trains go by in countryside, one one side. As I've droned on about incessantly before, my main suggestion would be to think about on track storage in fiddle/staging yards. I don't think you've the space for a helix or helixes, but it strikes me that on the two diagonals you have a long enough run for a gentle gradient down to a lower level. You can never have too much on-track storage. I can't work out from the plan whether you've got different levels or it's all pretty flat. Maybe you could do some sketches to show how it might look in the room, rather than just the 'skeleton' of the plan.
    Not sure how tight the curves at either "end" of the layout actually are, but on the plan, they look a bit tight to be so visible. Not a lot you can do about that though.

    • @Sandlingjunction
      @Sandlingjunction  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, Andrew, much for your kind comment to digest, I threw this out to get a well-balanced reaction and some extra potential beyond my immediate thinking. That is exactly what is happening yourself included. So I feel that this plan will morph and change a lot before I settle on the final solution. really like the idea of raising tables and having a lower level.

    • @andrewstevenson5449
      @andrewstevenson5449 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Sandlingjunction I actually think that a lot of model railways are built too low, so you're always looking down on them as if in a helicopter. Taking photos/videos of model railways, the first thing most people do is crouch down so the track is at eye level. I think building baseboards at 5 or 6 feet above the floor, may be a bit much, but when my dad and I had a large layout there was about 3 feet between the lowest and highest levels, and (at least until it was extended into an adjoining space with a higher floor) without helixes.

    • @Sandlingjunction
      @Sandlingjunction  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andrewstevenson5449 As this room is in the roof space there is a limit to the height i can go, but think higher maybe better, though at the cost of being able to stretch over wider areas created by corners etc.

    Hi Paul. What about putting hinges on the base boards against the walls so that when they are empty, or track not connected to each other etc. You can get under the table standing up. Have a 2x4 against the wall as support and hinges on that. If that makes sense. Greetings from Cape Town South Africa

      Hi thank you, the walls cannot really be touched the curved one is the only access to the main bedroom, the other loft wall would cause so much dust and particle disturbance, and sadly my wife is a severe asthmatic, and she would have to move out. That is not a great plan lol.

  • @trevorrothwell5565

    Sandling Junction has been sadly missed, not just because of your down to earth attitude to modelling, but because it's essentially the only layout on which Southern EMUs play a major role. An interesting space in which to contemplate the new layout. However, as someone who is well past it (!) I would emphasise a point already made - do try to avoid having to 'duck under' to access part of the layout. You may be agile enough now, but the years roll by rather quickly!

    A couple of things to think about. Is the curved wall between the bedroom and the hall structural? If not, maybe it can be moved or "tunnelled" through in two places, so that a small part of your layout is in the hall. Can the door to the hall be replaced with a sliding or concertina door to give you more space?

    • @Sandlingjunction
      @Sandlingjunction  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Henry. the tunnel idea will not e an option, but the plan is to remove that door for a muslin screen.
