Monster Train is a roguelite deckbuilder that is clearly inspired by games like Slay the Spire but also puts its own spin on the formula, including spawning minions and an emphasis on positioning. It's one of the year's most enjoyable roguelites so far so I decided to play some more of it. Check it out!

About this game:
Monster Train is a strategic roguelike deck building game with a twist. Set on a train to hell, you’ll use tactical decision making to defend multiple vertical battlegrounds. With real time competitive multiplayer and endless replayability, Monster Train is always on time.
"These are not the demons I am looking for." Yeah sure, just skip a 30/4 with multi stirke. I'd rather keep 2 of my floors empty each fight.
NL: "Lose 25 Pyre Health for 150 gold? Yeah, absolutely. *Cackles* I aint ever scared"
Me: *glancing at the 6 minutes remaining of the video* 👀
I am continually amazed by NL repeatedly skipping free units in packs (even with artifact synergies!), cheap 20 gold +25 life upgrades for his units, and opportunities to dump train stewards up front to eat attacks.
Ikr, train stewards have so much practical value with just a cheap upgrade or two. I usually get rid of one or two, but this boy is constantly just denying himself utility.
@@nemeanlyan7918 i mean, im covenent 12 and ive never upgraded the train steward. I just yeet them to die until I yeet em outta the deck
@@nemeanlyan7918 The dude has an irrational hatred for em. It's less relevant at a low difficulty level, but for sure he needs to get used to using the stewards early on, potentially even upgrading them if his deck lacks tank/dps and removing them when their role is fulfilled by other units rather than just 'train steward stinky'.
@@nomoturtle1788 I mean, by all practical purposes, any unit is more viable to upgrade than stewards, and imo, torch is more valuable than stewards.
He also massively underestimated frostbite, put endless on a unit that doesn't recycle, and upgraded spell reduction twice without incanf synergies making his deck lack any useful stat. Imo, these issues were much more critical than his poor use of stewards.
And he don't use horn break on high armor low health enemies... cuz it literally pierces armor and shields and deals 5 damage to health, no matter how many spell or damage shields or armor the unit has.
"So out biggest problem is definitely capacity." Proceeds to literally only use one floor in the entire train and dies immediately the next fight.
Am i loosing it or could NL have lived on the first run if he had dazed the boss and played the horned warrior?
He could have lived if he had more than 4 units in his deck
Yeah the dazed still works on relentless boss even if they don't get moved by the card
@@ericrash4625 Most of my wins in this game have less than 5 or 6 units. A single god floor and buffs/ spells works really well. Especially with the stygian
nah he wouldn't have survived but he should've at least tried it
@@gigakid3 But you have 5 or 6 units when they are upgraded and spells that buff them, not 3 average units and no buffs....
I like how he realized dazed on the trap chute would apply to the boss, but he didn't realize that his horned warrior could've done 120 dmg bc of the dazed lol.
one day the Train Stewards will revolt against you, NL, beware 😂
The moment they get Advanced Prototype, NL is going to die messily.
Does NL not realize what Piercing means? Could have killed a 50 health enemy, but instead he does 10 damage XD.
"frostbite bite does not decay" sounds insane for boss fights LOL
the Icy cylophite with multistrike gets insane with that artifact
@@tim-o-tee_0338 icy cilophite is the spell weakness one i do know which one you are talking about but the best thing with cuttlebeard is the incant totem that applies frostbite
@@retabix6798 You're 100% right, Coldcalia is the creature I was thinking of. with multistrike 1 and that artifact you go from 3 frostbite on the whole floor to 10 that is permanent.
It's incredibly powerful. For some reason NL only thought about it going through three rounds of play and decided it sucks, but in boss fights it gets you hundreds of extra damage over dozens of rounds of combat even without trying to maximize it.
@@topace3000 he literally just didn't think about boss fights, thought about how it impacted trash mobs. Either that or he doesn't realize frost triggers on each round of combat, not at the end of the floor.
Love hearing NL unironically doing a collector 'ummmm' when he's in a tough spot.
19:25 Playing too fast! You could have played either of the Torches cards to those back two units, the Frozen Lance on the coin fairy, then dealt 60 damage to the dude, instead of 20.
20:18 playing 2 horn breaker piercing spells would have killed the first armor dude, leaving the 6 + 5 + 20 damage from the other cards to deal damage to the other people, on _top_ of the damage from not wasting it on the armor dude.
21:34 Stunning the boss would let the Horned Warrior attack for two rounds of combat dealing 120 damage, + 12 damage from the Lances, leaving the boss with 117 HP, which means the Pyre would have killed him in 4 turns, giving you the run.
It's a good try, but playing slower would have definitely kept you alive.
I don't think it was really a speed of play problem as much as it is a lack of NL understanding the mechanics still.
TankorSmash
Look at Egg’s reaction at 21:43, he clearly didn’t understand that the boss would be stunned
@@fakesmilez1 generally, I do agree that with StS and this game again, there is a bit of lack of understanding of mechanics and that's a bit hard to watch.
His daily run was just all over sloppy and his love of horned warrior over actual units with synergies baffle me.
Hey NL! Tip offering token is amazing in discard decks. Even if you have two offering cards it’s great with holdover. It’s 0 cost that can reliably proc offerings without having to rely on luck or discarding your whole hand
Exactly. And even without a bunch of offering cards it can help you find your important cards and discard your less immediately useful cards for 0 cost. Super useful.
He also talks about trying to make the deck more consistent by removing cards which helps but is limited. Offering tokens allow you to create optimal hands each turn when you give 1 or 2 holdover and go for draw upgrades.
He keeps thinking that offering token occupies space when basically allows him to arrange his hand better. Because if you have 5 cards in the beginning and you have 5 cards in the end with no cost where is the dead draw there?
It's also amazing with Incant triggers, turning your train stewards into useful spells most of the time, I usually copy 5 offering tokens if I get the chance
@@lecram86 Offering token itself takes up one of your draws, and you have to discard 1 when you play it. So it's a 1 card negative
Or in other words, the card you draw by playing Offering Token is the card you would have drawn anyway if you had not drawn Offering Token, and then you have to discard a card too
1:26 GLASSES FOGGING UP GOURDS POGGING UP LET’S GO TRAIN TIME DUDE I’M JAZZED
WHY GET SO FOCUSED ON LIFE STEAL WHEN YOU CAN'T HEALLL. Still a great video though, enjoyed all 50 minutes and 54 seconds
The cuttlebeard relic is busted for fighting bosses that move around because you can start stacking frostbite immediately, and during relentless. Knowing your champion's ability before grabbing relic is really helpful, always get your champion then relic
EDIT: Nvm you're doing great sweetie. Pog all around
I very much disagree. Very often my relic will change my choice of champion
in my opinion there is no good way of deciding at the start of a run, relics can make certain champions better while the champions can decide the relic
I agree that either can affect the other, but can you just look? I know it's possible to back out of some choices in this game or look at other info while the choice is being made, that would be ideal.
I mean he decided against the relic regardless of champion, so that's not really relevant here. The strategy of choose a relic assuming you'll get each champion and decide what's best makes the most sense to me tbh - all relics are good and you are far more likely to get a champion you want than a relic that is good for them.
Joe Hemmann nah you can’t back out of either. I just find each class has one champion I don’t like and one I really like, IMO the champion will affect the artifact choice more often
Enelle piercing cards go through spell shield and armor a heavy hitting horn break can kill units in one shot
I love Monster Train so much I already pogged all 50 minutes right into my gourd
This gets the first heart of the comments section over 900 greentext comments
@@Northernlion I hope the comment section becomes a bit nicer, and a bit less lesson heavy, like it happened with Isaac. It's downright condescending atm.
@@Northernlion I feel the blessings, brother! I'm only bringing positivity to these comments.
I love Monster Train, I suck and misplay all the time, and I empathize hard with you getting all types of shitass comments. For these reasons, I shall remain pogged on NL and Monster Train!
God damn, I absolutely despise those Harvest guys when playing Umbra. It feels so disgustingly unfair to fight them.
The best play in that case is usually to take a few turns off from playing morsels and simply let them reach the pyre unbuffed.
There's several hard counters it seems like in this game. Spell shield absolutely WRECKS Stygian.
The horn break disrespect really got me on this one
Dude, this Charged Tanks always mess my face when im playing Umbra because of the gorge, great to see i'm not the only getting wrecked
Great video, stay pogged
all aboard the monster train to pogness, egg minions!
Just wanted to jump in and say thanks for the company, Egg.
I keep doing exactly what NL does on the daily 😂😂
Hey NL, you should really value/read horn break a bit more, it IGNORES armor and shields, so at 21:00 you could have killed the guy with 10hp and 60 armor with the two horn breaks instead of not killing anything.
Yeah, that hurt to watch. Piercing is so good vs armored minions.
Cuttlebeard with the campion applying frostbite and spell weakness (spell weakness for sweep) its sooooo strong
Those football player dudes who get armor off units dying are the bane of NL's existence. XD
Hmm... it seems like the Pog-Levels are still quite high. Thus we are still aboard the Monster Train.
That moment when Vent becomes Algebra
It isn’t 30-29-28 for bosses because they decay frostbite with each attack cycle
Watching you hit some stumbling blocks is both fun and great for learning the game. Thanks for the POGGED content NL!
dude you massively undervalue frostbite. Having frostbite not decay is absolutely insane for boss fights
NL, you're killing me here. Horn break does piercing damage, meaning it ignores armor and goes straight for the red hearts.
In the options, you can turn off scrolling when playing cards. That way you don't play spells on the wrong floor by accident.
NL having more draw on your turn is really valuable, especially with stygian as each cycle card essentially gives you free incant triggers (not to mention offering cards count as being played when discarded). Greatly underestimating the value of offering token. Think about it most +draw cards are for your next turn.
Friendly reminder that offering is not draw because it costs a draw to have in the first place. If you didn't have offering in your deck you would have drew the card you drew with offering without having to discard anything. That means it's not a staple at all and is only worth it for actual offering or incant synergy.
Horn Break has Piercing, so you could have killed the guard unit at 20:37. You also should put your Horned Warrior in front of the Alpha Fiend because it has Endless so it can tank a hit, then move it to the back when the boss shows up.
Hey NL! Love riding the train with you as always. Quick bit of info - I think you may be sleeping a little on that Frostbite not decaying relic. It doesn't do all that much against basic units, but its freaking strong as a boss killer.
You can put it on the flying bosses that change floors throughout the turns and its always hitting at max, I've killed a final Seraph before they even got to the final fight by stacking non decaying frostbite early with hoarfrost (take all frostbite on a floor and double it on a unit). It's also good during the relentless portion of the bossfights themselves where every hit they do no longer decays the frostbite.
I like this series because NL's plays and thought processes are so different from mine. Out of all the clans I have the most wins with Stygian, I love them so much, but NL always seems to struggle with them. It makes for a very interesting watch. Oh, and you can turn off the auto-scroll while selecting spell targets, NL!
The gourd is overflowing
I do not blame NL for trying new things even if he loses a lot of runs because of it - that's all part of the learning process. However, if he wants to climb to the higher covenant levels he's going to need a better understanding of certain game mechanics. It was clear at the end of the first run that he understood Trap Chute would still apply dazed even though the boss would not move, and yet he discredited the usefulness of the card since he wouldn't be able to descend the boss. Dazed is a very useful status effect against bosses because of the nature of the endless round. X Dazed applied to the boss is essentially equivalent to X free hits on the boss during the endless round.
Some of the best advice I can give to new players to Monster Train is to not look at cards in terms of a specific use case scenario. Many cards can be used in many different ways. Maybe you care about the descend effect of trap chute, or the dazed effect, or both, or maybe you don't care about either of the effects but care that it's a zero cost card that may trigger an artifact effect for a certain number of cards played, etc. The game offers many different possibilities for a successful run and keeping an open mind with how cards can be used strategically is key to a players success.
"My glasses are getting fogged up" - NL getting the excuses in early
A game about moving some sort of needle.
Offering token is actually a pretty good card. At a minimum you filter your worst card in your hand while at best you draw a card and cast a 3 ember spell for 0.
Great series! Sweep units or the ones that get armor on unit death are hard to deal with when using morsels. Good luck next run.
Only recommendation I have is to pick up battering ram next time. You had steel workers, welder helpers, a zero energy armor card and an armor relic. That's good synergy and even if it took your entire energy for a turn to play it, would have been interesting to see how much damage it could. May or may not have saved the run, but would have shown that card's usefulness. And might have lead to some pog amounts of damage a few times.
21:43 I haven't tried with this card in particular so I'm not 100% sure, but I have used "ascend 1 floor and daze" on the boss and it did work, so I assume using Trap chute on the boss wouldn't have moved it but it would have dazed him, making the horned warrior a great play...
BTW in my case it DID ascend the boss (which is what i wanted) so please don't take my message as being able to play it without moving it.
I would hate to cause any of you guys' runs to lose because you thought you could get free dazed and instead killed your floor.
It wouldn't have moved in this case because it was a descend.
if he had played it it would have left the boss where he is(since he can't descend any more) and given him dazed two, that actually would have givven horned warrior enough of a chance to to deal 120 damage which would have allowed him to live
Anyone else trying to click the video without seeing how long it is to keep the excitement?
Offering Token is such a great card, allows you to play a bigger deck and drop bad cards / offerings.
It has almost no drawback
Friendly reminder that offering is not draw because it costs a draw to have in the first place. If you didn't have offering in your deck you would have drew the card you drew with offering without having to discard anything. That means it's not a staple at all and is only worth it for actual offering or incant synergy.
10:30 I feel the opposite way dude. I take it as a 0 cost incant trigger. That it is also useful for draw/discard meta is an added bonus. IMO
Then again I might over priorities incant trigger units.
Not enough respect for offering token. If you have enough offering triggers in your deck youll get one, or worst case discard a card you werent going to use anyway and speed the deck up. Plus the offering triggers incant as well for double synergy.
@@Chaosuser32 Remember that being able to discard cards you weren't going to play by using offering token will NOT speed your deck up because it cost you a draw to draw the offering in the first place. This means offering token is only good to enable discard and incant rather than it being a value pick. Permafrost is a great keyword to put on it because it allows you to not repeatedly get the card negativity from drawing it multiple times, instead only using it to trigger offering.
He's fogging up
I am here for Monster Train 🍄
You can turn off the autoscroll in the options menu btw.
offering is a great card. it enables great cards cycles trash cards from your hand early and triggers incant
Friendly reminder that offering is not draw because it costs a draw to have in the first place. If you didn't have offering in your deck you would have drew the card you drew with offering without having to discard anything. That means it's not a staple at all and is only worth it for actual offering or incant synergy.
@@Ghostneedle1 with trash i meant curses for which in the early game you often dont have the ember to play
I had the same problem with autoscroll. You can turn it off in the settings it's a big QOL change
Maybe this was covered in another video, but I still can't comprehend after all these runs why you take the Damage Shield units over Lifesteal. You are using on average 3 morsels per turn to mitigate ~3 attacks for ~5-8 each or ~20 damage total. That is instead of using ONE morsel per turn to allow the unit to heal itself anywhere from ~20-50 damage based on the morsels given and upgrades. As long as the lifesteal units don't die in the initial burst they are basically always more cost effective.
Also seems like if you would take Piercing seriously for one run you would understand you could've wiped out like 30% of the units just by giving it a measly +10 magic damage upgrade.
Honestly, that frostbite relic is a must-take for me, especially early. Fun run(s) though.
20:45 Horn breaker is piecing so ignores armour so you could have yeeted the tank unit
I only just realized that Trap Chute doesn't say enemy unit.
A thing that I already knew but that NL doesn't seem to know is that you can actually use that card on the boss. Even if you don't move them you still get to daze.
So do the big buff bird boys with harvest shut down morsel decks completely? I don't see how to take care of them when gorge is your focus.
*Thumbnail shows hellhorned/awoken*
*Video starts with stygian/hellhorned*
*MUST BE TWO SPEEDRUNS*
Also NL, you can disable autoscroll when playing cards in the game options ;)
EDIT: There was no awoken after all, I feel CHEATED
>First sentence says awokened
>Edit says "No awoken"
WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
@@Northernlion I was sleepy when I watched the video and commented XD I will cleanse my comment of my sins
Lololol he wants a tank but then doesn't bother adding health to his units 🤣🤣🤣
If you hadn't noticed yet NL, right next to the covenant level thing is a box that tells you if you have won with that clan combination and, if so, what level it was. It's an easier way to check than going back and forth with the logbook.
He does that at the beginning of this very episode...
Even his glasses are pogging up!
I remember this daily. I took the demon starter artifact and never got any demons, went all-in on the lifesteal while all my units were heartless and I figured out more and more that all of the cards I could have gotten would have benefitted from going the armor route. I didn't win this one (although I got pretty far).
Passing on the Battering Ram shocked me... that card is so good they had to nerf it down from 5x to 4x, and it's still amazing in your deck that can add 9 armor (aka 36 damage) for 0 ember.
hey NL! just a quick tip, offering token is amazing as in, its never bad in any deck, it helps you proc offerings 100% because you choose what to discard (unlike the unrealiable random discard you took in the same run lol) and by drawing one more card it means that even if you dont use it on an offering you can still use it to discard useless cards and replace them with a new one, plus, you can discard the newly drawn card so you might not even have any offering in your hand and get lucky to draw one AND choose to discard it all for 0 cost.
every time you see it pick it and you'll cycle your deck much faster, there is one weakness however: because of how the draw pile works in this game you cannot go infinite, if your draw pile is empty and you have offering tokens they will not draw anything and you'll be stuck with them for the turn, you can still use them to discard however.
Hey NL, the frostbite relic moves the needle quite a bit by basically killing off the support units.
He is GORGEous. Do not think I did not hear you, NL. 25:18
You know the video will pog
If Ryan's glasses are covered in fog.
any super mega baseball videos today? You got me sold on monster train AND SMB. I must say though I'm hooked on you and malf playing through that season.
“These are not the demons I’m looking for”....same
NL...Offering Token is one of the best cards in the game. Full stop. You need to actually try things before just deciding they're bad. Even without offerings it'd still be good with how much useless garbage is added to your deck through covenant rank and enemy abilities.
Hey NL I've been playing monster train a lot but only just discovered the overgorgers affects (+1 ATK per gorge) accumulates over the entire run... ps big fan loving the growth of the channel recently
I feel pnumbra gets countered by the most units in this game. They are not strong at chunking through heavy waves. They dont have great back line removal. But the real problem is harvest and sweep, to a lesser extent incant armors as well. Gets fustrating at times oh and dont think of going pnumbra melting with lots of expendable units because harvest will destroy you. Rant over. I know this game is like a puzzle and the point is to overcome these hurdles so thems the brakes.
TLDW; you disrespect tethys and you pay the price.
I came here for the misplays....
I was not disappointed :)
Hearing you describe 26C as a "little warm" as a Brit honestly scares me.
As a canadian describing 26C as a "little warm" makes perfect sense, "too warm" might be better but that isn't all that hot, got to love -40 in winter, and +40 in summer.
outstanding episode egg
Ok, NL is back on caffeine so he just sped up through every choice, sigh...
Purging the stewards instead of the torches to leave creatureless floors and having spells that deal 2 dmg instead of thinning the deck so you get the other better dmg spells was what killed him.
Count floors, capacity and creatures you have NL. You have 5 capacity per floor, each steward is two capacity. That means 6 stewards and your boss. Then, if you get new creatures, it is simple, you usually exchange a creature for a steward, unless it costs 1 capacity since then it fits. And count that a creature or two may die, so have a couple spares, no more, no less. If you upgrade your capacity you then can have more creatures. Easy, it does not take 3 hours of complicated calculations, just to pause a second or less.
And spells please, NL, stop having repeated spells that do the same but that one version is clearly better. Your best single target dmg spell from the start was the one dealing 5 piercing directed dmg. The other options where 2 directed dmg and 6 dmg to the front unit. Then you had two aoe dmg spells so why picking firestorm when you already have that base covered? Why not purge the torches, why? You had 10 cards that did the same, 4 of which where trash compared to the other 6. It is easy to see. It is not like having to calculate that one does 33 times 2.78 points of dmg and the other 3.59 times 2 all at the potency of four, and then compare them.
Also, if your spells are already cheap or free, you may want to pick the sweep plus freeze effect as the second champion upgrade... And look at the champion stats too, it is important. And I don't mean to notice it but to weight it as a factor that has an impact on your run.
And seriously NL, redo your math on Freeze decay especially against the boss because that first artefact/relic choice logic was terrible.
That's for the first run.
NL your morsels had 10+HP, you could have used them to tank damage and live long enough to be eaten.
Hey NL! Hope you see this, you can check the logbook anytime from your settings menu in the top right as well if you were not aware.
Love your content NL. Just so you know, at 21:50 i am not sure if you realized later, but i think you could daze him and then the unit would survive 2 turns, doing more than enough damage for your pyre to kill it. Hopefully this is not an undesired comment for you.
it would be cool to have something that gave spells offering
Dude frostbite with Cuddlebeard is S tier. Think about having a good tank and applying like 22 to the boss that doesn't decay. You could easily be doing 108 damage every round just from your champion's frostbite. If you get Coldcaelia, buff her with multistrike? Oh boy, it's all over.
21:34 i see NL's problem, he sees trap chute as a decend instead of the insta kill it usually is
I'll even use it on my own dudes in a pinch to stack the bottom floor before the boss.
Honestly offering token is like a staple in my Stygian runs. 0 energy, free draw. Usually draw into a card with offering. Discard the card I drew, boom free 3 energy play lol.
It's not free draw because it costs a draw to have in the first place. If you didn't have offering in your deck you would have drew the card you drew with offering without having to discard anything. That means it's not a staple at all and is only worth it for actual offering or incant synergy.
hornbreaker kills a lot of the units that have high shields and low HP. maybe next time
Remember those 3 episodes where he called his minions enemies like every 4 seconds?
Morsels make great blockers. 32:05
I've been messing with this game for o while, and Burn Bright molten remnant seems to be extremely OP. Basically you can just farm Golden cards with it
Offering token isn't a trap/bad card. Even if you don't have an offering card in hand to maximize use out of, it's a free re-draw on any turn since you can choose what you want to discard (Crap spells, blights, scourges)
Friendly reminder that offering is not draw because it costs a draw to have in the first place. If you didn't have offering in your deck you would have drew the card you drew with offering without having to discard anything. That means it's not a staple at all and is only worth it for actual offering or incant synergy.
I love NL but whenever he misplays I whince. It feel great whenever the gears start moving and it's so cathartic seeing him do good.
i want to make it clear that he's mentioned before that this kind of comment about his misplays made him not want to look at Slay The Spire youtube comments. let him play the game without complaining and if you have constructive criticism that isn't just "every time he misplays i wince" then it'd probably be more valuable.
Commenting so FATHER EGG!!! Keeps doing monster train!!!
11:24 Narrator: "It was the wrong play"
NL you could have survived if you played your horned warrior and the trap chute on the boss because it wouldnt have attacked the horned warrior for 2 turns which would have been 120 damage plus pyre damage
thanks for the content!
Horned Warrior plus trap door (2 dazed) would’ve let you live through that boss NL
I think turning off the Scroll function in the settings would do you some good.
I hate seeing a Pogging run get lost due to using a spell in the wrong row just because the game thought you wanted to go there.
Glasses fogged -> Gourd pogged
There's an option to stop the scrolling problem from happening.
needs to embrace the incarnate stygian guard build cheap spells draw damage and health buff incants. one day NL will find the rutt of stygian guard and on that day he wont want to leave
Win or lose these are good eats!
