  • Lions were endemic to the Ancient Near East and were widely regarded as the quintessential threat and apex predator. It's no wonder lions appear in ancient art as prevalent and potent symbols that represented threats and danger. These associations made them ideal guardians as well as symbols of ancient Near Eastern kings. This is only part 1 of 2 as there was SO much to cover!

    Would also point out that in Assyrian annals, the gods Ninurta and Nergal 'commanded' the king to hunt wild animals like lions. They were seen as a cosmic enemy.
