    During the second takeoff (the Twin Otter) the pilot performed an interesting maneuver where he used a touch of aileron to lift the right float first. By getting that float up off the water he reduced the drag caused by the floats in the water by 50%, allowing the aircraft to accelerate to takeoff speed just a little faster. This is known by seaplane pilots as “walking it off”.

      @ELMS, you made me smile, thank you. I find it interesting the tiny details people pick up on and then share their knowledge of what just happened. I'm the camera lady with a passion for watching seaplanes, I had no idea I would learn so much about them. In my early videos, from far far away, I couldn't tell the difference between a Beaver and an Otter. Or an Otter from a Grand Caravan. I got it now.....lol. I am sincerely grateful for your knowledgeable engagement and support, thank you. Best....Corrie

      All float plane pilots are trained to gain lift by rocking , it is normal, and done on every takoff you see , just about.
      Commerical carriers use this technique , some privates maybe not.
      It is done to reduce the heavy drag produced by the floats.

      @als1023, thank you Al. I am thankful that those in the know, share the "know". As I often say, I'm just the camera lady that loves to watch the comings and goings of these amazing machines. I learn from the passengers that visit the lounge. I am truly grateful for your knowledge, engagement and support. Best...Corrie

      Your confidence and presence gives the sense of a person that is well versed in their content .
      I did not know ( when watching some of your other vids in the past ) that you were
      "just the camera lady" ... aka a spotter . I assumed you were deeply involved with float plane aviation .
      If you can present like that without us knowing , then that is evidence of the quality of your endeavors.
      Keep the variety coming !
      P.S. - Hopefully there are stiff fines for anyone that ventures into the aviation zone on the water .....( even if the boats are mechanically affected ) ....... if they have mechanical issues and drift , they should be obligated to radio a distress call that they are experiencing a loss of control . Then upgrade the call if they are getting close to the "runway" .
      That being said , why do they need to be that close to the aviation zone anyway .
      I guess they like to get rained on when the floats drain overhead .

      @user-uu1wc6yz5z, thank your for your kind words and support, I am sincerely grateful. My goal is to get a little bit better with each video. This TH-cam journey has been the learning curve of my life. I had no idea that I'd be the "prep cook" the "head cook" the "dishwasher" the "server" and the "manager" all at one time.....lol. It astounds me how often I have to watch the harbour patrol avert a potentially dangerous situation. Some of the newbie kayakers are truly clueless and pose the most danger. The kayakers put their own lives in jeopardy when they think they can cross the harbour and outrun an incoming tug boat or a ferry. The commercial traffic that flows in and out of the harbour know the rules and it shows. The harbour patrol does a great job keeping everyone as safe as possible. Best...Corrie

    I flew the Twin Otter and Beaver out of YWH in early 2000 . Summer was always a challenge due to high winds and boats . etc . This brings back memories of me being a young man . HAHA . Thanks for the great video / The float flying was the most fun and challenging flying i ever did in my 35 years of working as a pilot .

    Hi From England. I have been lucky enough to have visited Victoria twice, and it's one of my favourite cities in the world. Beautiful video, and the music is perfect.
    I was lucky enough to spend a week in Vancouver in February 2023 and my family and had a city and mountains tour with Harbour Air, on a glorious weather day. Unfortunately we had not enough time to go to Victoria ; I should go back to BC.

      Then you should know this IS basically a (Very dangerous) water (take off and landing) Airport (and like all US airports no one is allow in the flight paths and for good reason all are subject to felony Airport Trespass here in the USA). With that said a Seaplane has stand on flight path right of way in landing, designated runway and the rest is true to what you wrote.

    • @leftcoastcorrie
      @leftcoastcorrie  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @boats2474, it all comes back to education and lack there of. If the rules were followed we wouldn't be having this conversation. The lack of education in most industry comes down to "learning on the fly", so to speak. I know many exceptional mariners, pilots and commercial drivers, this conversation is not about the rule followers. The training today is not what it once was. Here in BC, especially in the Vancouver area, commercial vehicles are constantly hitting highway overpasses because the driver forgot to lower the box. Mind boggling. Lovely video clips of Victoria harbour seaplane operations, but spoiled by the title. I do take strong exception to your characterization as "Chaos at Victoria Harbour! Wayward . . .", which it certainly was not. There was a sailboat where it should not have been. It was directed clear by Victoria Harbour Authority and operations continued in an orderly fashion, but never descending into chaos. Perhaps the purpose was to get viewer attention, but the result was misleading and unprofessional.

      A few more suggestions as I drink my morning coffee here in Ottawa, Canada. You might have used a different music score for different parts of the story. The first piece, where Harbour Patrol was racing toward the errant sailboat was perfect!
      Another more up beat music score could be used when the sea planes take off and land. Audio mixing becomes very tricky when you have wind noise, the roar of the sea plane taking off and the background music (which I suggest could be muted or reduced
      to a lower level). Corrie, please don’t take these suggestions as negative feedback. You have already mastered some powerful video editing skills and it shows in your ‘production’.
      A couple more iterations and perhaps you can submit your work to the Victoria and/or Vancouver Tourist Bureaus. Have a superb day!

      AI generated sound tracks from a video stream sounds like an amazing project. Not sure what free toolkits are out there. You could start by using textual input describing each scene, including the start and end times. That might be doable. The audio levels would have to fade out and then fade in for the next scene change. Getting to this stage would be impressive. Keep us posted on your progress. PS. By the look of it, the single engine otters have been refitted with newer turboprop engines. You can tell by the more slender pointed nose, compared to the much larger snub-nose the older engines had. I flew in the old ones, and were they noisy!

      @greenmanofkent, I'm rarely a jealous person, but I am jealous that you've experienced a radial engine Otter. That is amazing! I have yet to see an Otter with a radial engine, only in pictures. The vazar turbines are an outstanding conversion and are actually pretty quiet inside. I have a few videos uploaded where I sat in the right seat and recored the adventure, the audio shows how the engine noise isn't that bad. I do love the nostalgia of the old technology and the sounds. I have a few videos with Beavers that have been converted. Victoria has one of the most beautiful skylines that I have seen, from a boat perspective. St. Thomas, USVI, where I live, has another. We see boats always in the way of our daily seaplanes but usually they are resolved without harbor police. They DO come close, though. Stop by someday to see. I’ll give you a tour of the #SandfloorSynagogue, one of the oldest on the Western Hemisphere.
    It is windy (for the boater, maybe) and we have fewer boaters who do not understand rules … but more drunken ones, I’m sure. Nice music. A Russian composer or is this “Night on Bald Mountain”? 10 on 10 for this video. Subscribed.

      Planes talk to planes, and the control tower. Small boats aren't required to talk to anyone, and many don't talk or listen at all, but if they do, it's with each other or on Channel 16. The Coho and other large ships talk with Marine Traffic and other ships as well as Channel 16. Sailboats are NOT allowed to put up their sails in portions of the harbor, so they are always motor vessels.
      Planes adjust where and direction of landing/takeoffs depending on wind.
      It sounds chaotic, but it's not bad at all as long as people follow the documented traffic flows and use the Mark 1 eyeballs.

    Although I could have some understanding for a boat under sail and somewhat at mercy of the wind, that boat was under engine power. Too many incompetent people in control of cars, boats, etc.

      @leftcoastcorrie  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @HOWNDOG66, your comment could not be more true. I was almost hit in a crosswalk the other day. The WALK was clearly on for pedestrians to cross, half way across the road, a car went through the red light without so much as touching their brakes. Incompetence is the new reality and a dash of entitlement. It's unfortunate that some people have no clue how many lives can be put in danger because of ignorance. We are fortunate the harbour patrol is very aware of the surroundings all the time. It's actually quite entertaining to watch the Zodiaks work together to secure the harbour. I’m new to seaplanes and have a simple newbie question. Why are we only seeing museum pieces in operation here? I can’t imagine trusting a 70 year old airframe that’s been operating in salt water all those years. Isn’t there anything more modern available for operations like this?
    (I do realize that these planes have been retrofitted with turbo shaft engines that weren’t available when these airframes first took flight. But still, material science has progressed tremendously since the 1950’s.)
    Beautiful city, Victoria. I took my elderly parents there on a vacation once. We arrived by car ferry from Seattle.

      Answer is surprisingly simple... nobody has designed and built a better aircraft for this type of use since the 1950's. Cessna's Caravan isn't bad, but the Otters are still the better design for this kind of use.
      However, at this point, I do wonder if any of the original parts are still on the Otters? A few Beavers are out there still flying with piston engines designed in the 1930's, but many/most have also been converted to PT6 turbine power. It doesn't hurt that Beavers and Otters and their PT6 turbines are all Canadian-designed and built. Local builders understand local operating conditions.
      Some aircraft can apparently be kept flying indefinitely.
      The fleet of American B-52 bombers are now getting new Rolls Royce engines (at the cost of billions) and the US plans on operating them until they are at least a hundred (100+) years old. The grandchildren of their original pilots are now flying them. Might get to great-grandchildren pilots before they get retired. Mind-blowing, but no bomber has been built since the early 60's that can do everything the B-52 can do.
      Similar story for Otters.

      Why stop at boaters if you want to impose excessive fines? Run a red light or get caught using a cell phone while driving and you're a danger to the public and should have your vehicle seized. Get caught jaywalking and you're also a danger since a car might have to swerve to avoid killing you and that car might hit somebody else. Maybe 3 months in jail would teach people to use crosswalks.
      Or does that seem harsh since you drive a car and walk and might one day be subject to one of these punishments?
      Let's not forget that these floatplane operators are private companies that convinced (bribed) the government to privatize part of the ocean to help their profits and that sailboats were on the water thousands of years before floatplanes ever came along.

    I used Harbour Air between Vancouver BC and Vancouver Island, One of the highlights of that business trip. But as a Finn, I was a bit worried about the Island end because of possible driftlogs, we have those too near papermills. And, the saddest thing I learned that thay are planning to ruin those wonderful planes by turning them electric... I will not be using those Flying Ladyshaves, just because the danger of the now available battery technology. A battery fire would just kill everyone on board, and as the insurance companies will consider the risks involved, the insurance costs alone will make them switch back to real engines. The green stupidity must be stopped, no matter what. As is well documented, the Green Movement was created to cause harm to the West. The DDR was ordered by the Soviet Union to invent a movement that is not openly leftist. DDR then ordered the West German communists to contact former naz1s (yes...) who had already started creating a green party. That "unholy alliance" was based on common hatred against the West and will to cause harm to the Western industry and societies, The first Green Party meeting was held 1976, and from there is "the photograph all the Greens of the world would like to destroy"; the West German communists celebrated with former naz1s. So, connecting dots, anyone? The green movement was not created to protect nature. It was created to cause harm. Documented, no use to deny it. DDR documented everything. Now we have wind "power", "climate change", "carbon taxes", electric cars, etc.
    The winner of Nobel Prize for physics, John F Clauser said: "There is no climate emergency","the (official)climate science is pseudoscience", and "the IPCC is the worst source of dangerous misinformation". That is because he knows that the greenhouse effect of the CO2 is logarithmic, that means that only doubling the concentration of the CO2 in the atmosphere can create a measureable rise in global temperature. The snail pace rise of today can not cause any measureable rise. That is a scientific fact. Not widely published in the media, though... Anyone can google "climate sensitivity" and find that out. No other CO2 related mechanisms have been found. We have been lied to. Biggest hoax of the history.

    Just proves that Victoria like Vancouver harbor is poorly marked for the seaplane runway. They should be better marked with buoys with flashing strobe lights that indicate a takeoff or landing like they have in Nanaimo. Time Transport Canada got its act together before there is another accident like in Vancouver. This is a harbor first and an airport second.

      @drumswest5035, thanks for finding the lounge, I am truly grateful for your engagement and support. In my opinion, Victoria Harbour is well marked with buoys and has at least four flashing strobe lights and a well run patrol system. The harbour map was easy to find, clearly showing the harbour laneways. I have spent hundreds of hours in both Victoria and Vancouver harbour, recording the comings and goings. It is almost always an uneducated mariner causing the problems. The harbour is a harbour. It has rules that need to be followed. If the rules were followed all the time, it would be a harmonious place. I almost got hit in a crosswalk yesterday because a driver blatantly ran a red light. The rules only apply to those that chose to follow them. Sorry for my rant, I just see too much stupidity on a regular basis. Best....Corrie

      I would argue the opposite. In terms of traffic, there are vastly more seaplanes arriving and departing than boats. Victoria has a control tower in the harbor for the aircraft, but not for boats. Lastly, until a float plane lifts off, it's a watercraft, just like the sailboats. They both use the wind to 'fly'. I've come into Victoria many times in my boat, and it's always been clear that we boat drivers have to work our way around the seaplanes, who have priority.

      @johnmarshall6702, I appreciate your knowledgeable comment and support, thank you. It's refreshing to hear from a mariner that knows the rules of the harbour. Victoria is a beautiful harbour to motor into, and It's a beautiful harbour to takeoff and land. When rules are followed, it's a harmonious balance. Best....Corrie

      @@johnmarshall6702seaplanes do not have priority if you review the maritime laws. I have had these discussions with both Harbor Air ( Baxter Air at the time) and Transport Canada when i had my boat. There is going to be an accident one day as traffic for both will only get busier.

    • @leftcoastcorrie
      @leftcoastcorrie  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @drumswest5035, I couldn't agree more. It is sad but true, and I don't like to forecast the future, however, I do think the potential is there for an accident one day. Exponential growth is happening in every sector of life and business. That translates to busier everywhere. Look at how many trucks have hit overpasses on the mainland lately, it's an epidemic that comes back to lack of training and education. I appreciate your engagement, thank you. @gburow01, thanks George. I am grateful for your engagement and support. I know private seaplanes and probably charters land at Pat Bay. I grew up in the Pat Bay neighbourhood and took off in a Cessna 172 many years ago. Such a great experience, one I will never forget. I wonder if the water runway and the land runway are in too close to each other in proximity? It would make sense to have commercial seaplane services out there. Best....Corrie

    Well, seeing what happened in the Vancouver Harbor the other month, with the plane hitting the boat, I’m sure everybody’s taking those type of violations much more seriously, and I’m hopeful that sailboat captain got a hefty hefty fine when he got back to the dock

      It's rare if not unheard of to get a fine for things like that. Recreational boating doesn't work that way. Mostly you might get approached by a patrol boat which tells you what to do. Not sure how Canada handles boat operator licensing, but in the US (and many boats entering Victoria are American), if you are over a certain age, you don't need any documentation, license or training. Under that age, you need some simple training, but you don't get a 'license' in the way of motor vehicles.
      So I'm pretty certain nothing happened to the sailboat given he wasn't violating Federal marine rules, just the harbor rules. Might be different if you are operating an ocean-going cargo or passenger ship.
      On the other, catching the wrong fish in the wrong place can get you BIG fines, both in Canada and US.
