Art Tatum was one of the greatest pianist in history possibly the greatest I mean player maybe not composer ... but chopin Liszt all would’ve been absolutely amazed at him he’s so masterful anyone who is a master art Tatum makes them look like amateurs ! Art Tatum plays like a master wishes he could play
Wohoaa buddy not Liszt, Liszt was otherwordly Tatum basiclly learned on tecniques Liszt pionereed and mastered some 100 yeara before him. Plis Liszt was an exceptional composer (conturary to popular belief) his tecnique was one of kind
Cue the goosebumps at 1:35!!! I'm guessing this was a kind of "shoutout" to the only other man who could rival him, Donald Lambert. Lambert also recorded "Liza", and there's a video of him here performing it, stride style, at a rapid tempo, though not nearly as fast as this. "Elegie" could also have been a shoutout as Lambert played it too. While not as harmonically complex, Lambert's playing was reportedly the only one who could match Tatum's on a stride basis.
Lee sims as well not being considered a jazz pianist but youll hear a strong stride that could "rival" tatums when you hear him youl hear where Tatum gets his style
Once again Tatum displays his otherworldly left hand leaps. If you will notice, at the double time stride section (which hovers around 180 beats per minute), he employs the absolute worst for anyone who tries to emulate his style; TENTHS. It was bad enough to execute leaps at least octave apart at this speed, non-stop, without any added intervals. Here, CONSECUTIVE TENTHS have been utilized; within the 13 second interval between 1:35 and 1:48 almost FOURTY consecutive tenths are employed in between the chords on top. Try it out on the piano and be fascinated at how it cannot be done; at how it simply CAN'T be done. Not even close. If you disagree, but happen to be Marc-Andre Hamelin, or have hands the size of Mr. Rachmaninoff, I might be convinced.
in my humble opinion, Art Tatum was just simply the greatest pianist of the 20th century.
only of the 20th century? O.o
Rachmaninoff and Hofmann both exist you know
Art Tatum was the greatest jazz piano player that ever lived.
@Dave Smith Have you heard Liszt?
@@none5020 wow didn't know Liszt played jazz.

I love how stride pianist can play very fast this song is great by the master himself Art Tatum.
MY GOD! MY GOD! What a gift he had.
Thats gotta be the fastest stride playing I´ve ever heard...
There can be only one pianist like Tatum in music history
Beautiful! Tatum is the master! Gershwin would be proud!
Gershwin loved Tatum, had him play at many parties in the mid-1930's.
Just brilliant. Like all Tatum)
only Art Tatum could play LIZA like this...brilliant!

Donald Lambert didn't record prior to 1941. You are correct in that he was in a very very small list of pianists who could give tatum a chuckle
yes!!!!!
Fat’s is not so bad too !!

+Santosificationable Georges CZIFFRA does but he was the only one...with Tatum
I doubt Cziffra could play tenths this fast. Tatum had huge hands.
Nobody in the world can, dead or alive. Only Tatum.
No. Elegie is faster. Go listen to it - nearly 200 bpm...
