This video & Part 2 are really well done; iI like that you flesh out what it is about each song that makes them Top 20; you also tend to rank a lot of deep cuts; I'm not the biggest Iron Maiden fan (but I have all their albums) so I will reference your vids when I do a deep dive in their discography; both the Adrian Smith cuts from Somewhere in Time are on my list of favorite Iron Maiden songs.

Great review, I remember the Daley thompson advert with Phantom of the Oprea in 80s that started my love of Maiden. I cant remember the quatro advert? Revelations or Phantom are my fave songs in this era. Up the Irons🤘🤘

Hey Mr Boulder. Thanks for the video, nothing like a bit of Iron Maiden love, and topical for me as I saw them in Auckland last week. Great list, Murders In The Rue Morgue and Stranger In A Strange Land are my top two, but full respect for giving Invaders some attention. I got to see British Lion the night before too, well worth checking out, great band. I hung around afterwards and got a pic with Steve and a couple of albums signed, so a special end to the night. Take care, and keep up the content, it's always a good watch.
I saw that tour in London last year, was amazing to hear Alexander The Great live wasn't it! Stranger In A Strange Land is a great song. Cheers for watching Colin
great video! Cant go wrong with any song from the first 7 albums. A couple that you didnt list that would rank pretty high for me include, Caught Somewhere in time, 22 Acacia Avenue, Moonchild, Deja vu...
Hi James!!! Well done and awesome top 20..... your list is so cool and it was an excellent surprise to see one of my favorite and the first song i ever heard from Maiden: " Invaiders"!!!! to me one of the most underrated songs. To me also "Infinite Dreams" has to be one of the greatest tune on an almost perfect record. "Wasted Years" to me is also a perfect/classic song, always loved how Adrian Smith plays the solo after that cool "bridge??"..... I will be listening to my 50 songs playlist i have in my Ipod. cheers and be well
Fantastic video dude! Loving some of your entries and placements here! My top 20 1980-1988 is as follows: 1980-1988: 1. Infinite Dreams 2. Rime of the Ancient Mariner 3. Alexander the Great 4. Hallowed Be Thy Name 5. Powerslave 6. The Trooper 7. Revelations 8. Aces High 9. Wasted Years 10. Phantom of the Opera 11. Where Eagles Dare 12. Two Minutes to Midnight 13. The Duellists 14. Stranger in a Strange Land Honourable mentions go to the following songs that I’d have loved to have wedged in, but ran out of space and in no particular order - Invaders (totally agree, this track IS a belter - the solos alone are out of this world), Flight of Icarus, To Tame a Land, Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner and Wrathchild. I MUST agree where Alexander the Great is concerned - an all time classic and one that, like you, I could listen to again and again in a row! Great list! Don't blame you for putting Wasted Years at number 1. It's also one of my all-time favorites. Glad you put Alexander The Great so high as well.
There is no such thing as a wrong top 20 list from this era of Iron Maiden, everything they did back then was so good. Nice to see To Tame A Land get some love here, that is such an under rated song. My favorite is The Clairvoyant, after that it is tough to rank, I might go with Wasted Years and Wrathchild next. 🤘
Brilliant show.....I like 'Invaders' very much too, especially as it has a strong Bruce/Samson vibe to it. I'd have 'Powerslave' in the top 5. 'Prodigal Son' and 'The Prisoner' should also be in the list too I reckon. But considering that across those 7 albums there are about 60 awesome tracks, nobody's top 20 is going to be the same. The depth of quality amongst those records is incredible. Looking forward to your other two shows covering the Maiden discography.
Excellent stuff James, can't go far wrong with early Maiden. Here's my top 15. 1. Caught Somewhere in Time 2. Infinite Dreams 3. The Trooper 4. Where Eagles Dare 5. Wasted Years 6. The Clairvoyant 7. Powerslave 8. 7th Son of a 7th Son 9. Moonchild 10. Hallowed be thy Name 11. Stranger in a Strange Land 12. Alexander the Great 13. Back in the Village 14. Killers 15. Children of the Damned.
Great list of classic Maiden songs James! It's hard to pick out of those incredible albums, but I think my top 10 would be; 1. Wasted Years 2. Hallowed Be Thy Name 3. 2 Minutes to Midnight 4. Wrathchild 5. Powerslave 6. The Trooper 7. Phantom of the Opera 8. Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner 9. Number of the Beast 10. Aces High Great stuff mate, look forward to parts 2 and 3! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
@mrboulder9714 Thanks man, glad you liked my picks! Ha yeah, it's a great song, probably is my favourite but it's tough to call. You're welcome mate 😁🤘🏻🤘🏻
Great list and I agree with many of them! As you say, it’s easy to miss plenty of other top songs in this golden Maiden era. Some of my other favourites include: Remember Tomorrow Innocent Exile Children of the Damned The Prisoner Revelations 2 Minutes to Midnight Sea of Madness Moonchild The Clairvoyant Was lucky to see them again here in Australia a few weeks ago with the Future Past Tour. Up the Irons!
Revelations nearly made the top 20. Some other great picks here. I saw that tour in London last year. Was amazing to hear Alexander The Great live wasn't it. Cheers
Damn that's a hard one my pick would be 1 Rime Of The Ancient Mariner 2 To Tame A Land 3 Alexander The Great 4 Powerslave 5 Hallowed Be Thy Name 6 Stranger In A Strange Land 7 Seventh Son... 8 Phantom Of The Opera 9 The Clairvoyant 10 Flash Of The Blade 11 Aces High 12 Children Of The Damned 13 Infinite Dreams 14 Where Eagles Dare 15 22 Acacia Avenue 16 The Evil That Men Do 17 Killers 18 Sea Of Madness 19 Revelations 20 Remember Tomorrow
Thanks for a great ranking. I have some holes in my Maiden collection, and therefore I'm not going to venture ranking any songs. But I do like Moonchild off of Seventh Son; I would put that and Hallowed be Thy Name on the list - that's all I have for now😄
amazing list! i’ll admit most of these aren’t in my top songs, but the 80s output was so great i can understand any song being high. personally just my top 5 would be 1. caught somewhere in time 2. prowler 3. transylvania 4. flash of the blade 5. aces high
My personal list: 1. Deja Vu 2. Aces High 3. Wasted Years 4. The Trooper 5. The Evil That Men Do 6. To Tame A Land 7.Alexander the Great 8. Hallowed Be Thy Name 9. Infinite Dreams 10. Remember Tomorrow.
Great list James and yeah a classic period making it difficult to only choose 20 songs. Yeah Wasted Years is fantastic. Have you heard Ryan Adams version, it's worth a listen. Good to see Infinite Dreams make the list, have you heard the instrumental version of it on here? It works great and you can get a different appreciation of the music. I think my top 20 would be (not necessarily in this order apart from no.1): 1. Phantom of the opera Stranger in a strange land Aces high caught somewhere in time where eagles dare revelations deja vu the clairvoyant wasted years infinite dreams prodigal son killers rime of the ancient mariner only the good die young powerslave to tame a land the number of the beast the loneliness of the long distance runner hallowed be thy name murders in the rue morgue
I really don't know how you manage to keep knocking out these rankings, Boulder! Fair play to you. I reckon it'd take me months to try and whittle down Maiden's first 8 years to just 20 songs, let alone ranking them all! 😂 Wasted Years is definitely one that'd be right up there for me, though, for sure, so I can't fault you on that choice. Every song mentioned here is, of course, phenomenal! I'd have had to have found room for Caught Somewhere in Time, though! 😜 I look forward to your 20 picks for the following THIRTY SIX years! 😜 Cheers! 🤘
Was hard to pick just 20 songs from.this flawless period mate. Caught Somewhere In Time is an underrated gem I think, fantastic song. Cheers as always my friend
Amazing top 20 list tough tough choices to make im going to try mine! 20. Murders in the Rue Morgue 19. Sun and Steel 18. The Clairvoyant 17. Running Free 16. Sea of Madness 15. To Tame a Land 14. Aces High 13. Infinite Dreams 12. Killers 11. The Duellists 10. 7th Son of a 7th Son 9. Alexander the Great 8. Number of the Beast 7. Powerslave 6. Phantom of the Opera 5. Hallowed be thy Name 4. Where Eagles Dare 3. Wasted Years 2. Rime of the Ancient Mariner 1. Children of the Damned (Honorable Mention Innocent Exile) That was tough as im sure it was for you look forward to Part 2 cheers n up the irons 🤘🤘
Finally some love for "Invaders"! I love that track. Here´s a little revelation (get it??? hahaha...): When I saw them in 2005 and they opened with "Murders..." I started to cry like a little girl... psssst, don´t tell anyone! I had a similar idea for a video but I knew if I´d do a list I could throw it out of the window the very next day. Very hard to pin down my faves. My fave song is still "Caught somewhere...".
I see what you did there 🙂 Yres Invaders is very underrated. Caught Somewhere In Time is a great track, especially Bruce's vocals in the chorus. Cheers Jurgen
Picking your favourite maiden songs from this period of the bands history is no easy task it's simply one of the greatest albums runs in heavy metal agree with you on invaders though as it was the first maiden song I heard too don't know why it gets so much hate I love it sadly I don't think the band have ever played it live!
Not to sure how long that you have been a maiden fan. I've been a fan since April of 1982. When it comes to my era of Maiden. I like you have some standout songs. Well from the first album I'll always go with remember tomorrow and charlotte the hartlot. killers for me innocent exile. number of the beast i'll got with gangland and children of the damned. piece of mind I'll go with flight of Icarus. powerslave next back in the valley and flash of the blade. somewhere in time next deja vu and heaven can wait. seventh son next will only the good die young and can I play with madness. .
Wow, this is a really tough question. So many epics to choose from?! Some deep track on your list too. Definitely not Run To The Hills for me. Even as a diehard Maiden fan, I absolutely despise that song. So overplayed. We agree though on the Number 1 spot.
My top 20. Agree that Invaders is a nice track and gets way too much criticism. 1. Rime of the Ancient Mariner - Harris - 13.45 - 1984 2. Hallowed Be Thy Name - Harris - 7:08 - 1982 3. Prodigal Son - Harris/Di'Anno - 6:05 - 1981 14. Only The Good Die Young - Harris/Dickinson - 4:40 - 1988 15. Die With Your Boots On - Smith/Dickinson/Harris - 5:22 - 1983 16. The Prisoner - Smith/Harris - 5:34 - 1982 17. 2 Minutes to Midnight - Smith/Dickinson - 6:04 - 1984 18. Children of the Damned - Harris - 4:34 - 1982 19. Genghis Kahn - Harris - 3:02 - 1981 20. Where Eagles Dare - Harris - 6:08 - 1983
Great choices - Loved Quatro but wasn't Phantom on a Lucozade ad with Daley Thompson? Which album is the Bruce version of Killers on - you mention Live After Death but it's not on there unless an extra track someplace?
I think a most of your picks would have found its way into my top 20. A couple that didn’t make your cut, that would have been on mine, are “Revelations”, “Flash of the Blade”, and “Only the Good Die Young”.

1) Infinite Dreams 2) Revelations 3) Phantom 4) Caught Somewhere in Time 5) The Trooper 6) Hallowed Be 7) Purgatory 8) Flight Of Icarus 9) Powerslave 10) Aces High
I would not be anle to rank the so gs from this era... they'd all be number one. I bloody love "Invaders"! :) "Infinite Dreams" is, to me at least! the epitome of a brilliant power ballad. I love the guitar figures in the chorus of "Murders in the Rue Morgue"; the bridge is awesome too. Killers... "Oh god help me, what have I've done it again!"... brilliant lyrics there. Man, I love those 80s epics by Maiden "To Tame a Land", "Seventh Son...", "Poweslave", "Alexander the Great", "Phantom...." etc. - they're all masterpieces in my book.
Infinite Dreams is so underrated isn't it Kim Those epics in the 80s are untouchable. To Tame A Land, Seventh Son, Alexander The Great, all amazing. Cheers mate
Near impossible for me. My list can change by tomorrow and easily their best era the golden years. 1. Wasted Years 2. The Trooper 3. Hallowed be Thy Name 4. Alexander the Great 5. Infinite Dreams 14. Phantom of the Opera 15. Killers 16. Caught Somewhere in Time 17. The Evil That Men Do 18. Where Eagles Dare 19. Children of the Damned 20. To Tame a Land
Great picks, im not the biggest fan of the two first albums but that just me. 7th and Somewere are my favorites, and the most underrated(not the best) album is No Prayer For The Dying. Holy smoke is the only bad song on it, and Hooks In You isnt top either.

Basically I like all songs from their 1980-1988 era. Best Iron Maiden period. The last album I enjoy is "Brave New World". Their next albums are not my cup of tea. Some few songs only. Their worst album is "The Final Frontier" and their best "Piece Of Mind" in my humble opinion.
The first two maiden albums are where it’s at for me mate. I smashed the granny out of them doing to school as a 14 year old. Killers could be the greatest album of all time for me!!
I'm surprised no Can I play with madness and no Run to the hills a surprise? Mark's list it's very hard to say which is better than which when talking about the same band same ERA? I will do my best 21.. Stranger in a strange land 20. The Evil that Men do 19. To tame a land 18. Back in the Village 17. Powerslave 16. Rime of the ancient mariner not even in top 15 😢

Some of my other favourites include:
Remember Tomorrow
Innocent Exile
Children of the Damned
The Prisoner
Revelations
2 Minutes to Midnight
Sea of Madness
Moonchild
The Clairvoyant
Was lucky to see them again here in Australia a few weeks ago with the Future Past Tour. Up the Irons!
Revelations nearly made the top 20. Some other great picks here. I saw that tour in London last year. Was amazing to hear Alexander The Great live wasn't it. Cheers

Phantom of the opera was on the old Lucozade advert with Daley Thompson. Cheers.
Cheers for the correction. I really thought it was Quatro. Thanks for watching
Thanks for a great ranking. I have some holes in my Maiden collection, and therefore I'm not going to venture ranking any songs. But I do like Moonchild off of Seventh Son; I would put that and Hallowed be Thy Name on the list - that's all I have for now😄
They have so many great songs in their discography, it's difficult to pick your favourites. Thanks for watching
This ranking favourite songs is a really cool idea. Can’t do it without coffee though
☕️🚬👌💀🖤☮️
Absolutely. Definitely gotta have coffee on the go. Cheers
amazing list! i’ll admit most of these aren’t in my top songs, but the 80s output was so great i can understand any song being high. personally just my top 5 would be
1. caught somewhere in time
2. prowler
3. transylvania
4. flash of the blade
5. aces high
Excellent Top 5. Caught Somewhere In Time and Flash Of The Blade are bangers. Cheers

Some great picks here. Deja Vu is an underrated gem. Thanks for watching
Deju vu is amazing!
I think my top 20 would be (not necessarily in this order apart from no.1):
1. Phantom of the opera
Stranger in a strange land
Aces high
caught somewhere in time
where eagles dare
revelations
deja vu
the clairvoyant
wasted years
infinite dreams
prodigal son
killers
rime of the ancient mariner
only the good die young
powerslave
to tame a land
the number of the beast
the loneliness of the long distance runner
hallowed be thy name
murders in the rue morgue
I've not heard the different versions of Wasted Years and Infinite Dreams you mentioned Grant. Excellent Top 20 list mate. Thanks for sharing it
I really don't know how you manage to keep knocking out these rankings, Boulder! Fair play to you. I reckon it'd take me months to try and whittle down Maiden's first 8 years to just 20 songs, let alone ranking them all! 😂
Wasted Years is definitely one that'd be right up there for me, though, for sure, so I can't fault you on that choice. Every song mentioned here is, of course, phenomenal! I'd have had to have found room for Caught Somewhere in Time, though! 😜
I look forward to your 20 picks for the following THIRTY SIX years! 😜
Cheers! 🤘
Was hard to pick just 20 songs from.this flawless period mate. Caught Somewhere In Time is an underrated gem I think, fantastic song. Cheers as always my friend
Great songs all of them. I would include Running Free, first song I ever heard with them and Flash Of The Blade cause I love the guitars in that one.

Excellent Top 20. Children of The Damned is an underrated Maiden song. Cheers for watching
Interesting list James, hard undertaking, mine would be probably a bit more predictable lol.
It's not hard to jave a predictable list when a band has so many classic songs
For me , maiden it’s the greatest band ever . And those 7 albums are masterpieces.
It's a perfect 7 album run. Thanks for watching
I’ve always loved invaders 👍
An excellent and underrated song
Cheers
Picking your favourite maiden songs from this period of the bands history is no easy task it's simply one of the greatest albums runs in heavy metal agree with you on invaders though as it was the first maiden song I heard too don't know why it gets so much hate I love it sadly I don't think the band have ever played it live!
Plenty of amazing songs to pick from Maiden's heyday. Invaders is such an underrated banger isn't it. Cheers Robert
Not to sure how long that you have been a maiden fan. I've been a fan since April of 1982. When it comes to my era of Maiden. I like you have some standout songs. Well from the first album I'll always go with remember tomorrow and charlotte the hartlot. killers for me innocent exile. number of the beast i'll got with gangland and children of the damned. piece of mind I'll go with flight of Icarus. powerslave next back in the valley and flash of the blade. somewhere in time next deja vu and heaven can wait. seventh son next will only the good die young and can I play with madness. .
I started listening to Maiden in 86. I like the fact you've chosen a lot of deep cuts there. Cheers fella 👍
Infinite Dreams is my absolute favorite and Murders is number two or three!!!
Invaders is definitely an underrated Maiden tune. Thanks for watching

Excellent Top 5. Thanks for watching
Wow, this is a really tough question. So many epics to choose from?! Some deep track on your list too. Definitely not Run To The Hills for me. Even as a diehard Maiden fan, I absolutely despise that song. So overplayed. We agree though on the Number 1 spot.
Hard to put a list of their best songs together when they have so many bangers in their discography. Cheers fella

Great choices - Loved Quatro but wasn't Phantom on a Lucozade ad with Daley Thompson? Which album is the Bruce version of Killers on - you mention Live After Death but it's not on there unless an extra track someplace?
Now you say that I think I have a single with Bruce singing Killers on it. It may have well been a Lucozade ad. Cheers fella
Dude! After that initial sip your coffee must always go stone cold right? 😁 Great vid.
@TheVandal69 😂😂😂 Yeah, it is quite tepid by the time I finish it. Cheers fella
some great choices me ode. i wouldn't bother with this as i would never be able to decide on a final 20. Defintely their zenith creatively.
@neilbower9052 Cheers Neil.
So many great songs to choose from mate
I think a most of your picks would have found its way into my top 20. A couple that didn’t make your cut, that would have been on mine, are “Revelations”, “Flash of the Blade”, and “Only the Good Die Young”.

Hallowed
Ryme
Beast
Wrathchild

Invaders is one of my favorite Maiden songs
It's a very underrated Maiden song as far as I'm concerned
Cheers mate

Great picks, im not the biggest fan of the two first albums but that just me. 7th and Somewere are my favorites, and the most underrated(not the best) album is No Prayer For The Dying. Holy smoke is the only bad song on it, and Hooks In You isnt top either.
I like Holy Smoke, and absolutely love Hooks In You 😂 I'm not the biggest fan of the Di'Anno era either. Cheers
A difficult task indeed but too many obvious choices in this one for me. Waaaay too many singles. Where's the love for The Duellists, 22 Acacia Avenue, Sea Of Madness, Genghis Khan? :P Still, good vid :D

That period from 1980 to 1988 is an amazing run of albums. Peice of Mind is a banger. Cheers for watching
