Starbucks SUCKS to work for (2 yr employee tells you why & what you should know before starting)

  • Why Starbucks Sucks to Work for! If you still wanna get hired there check out my other videos LOL linked below!
    After working for starbucks for a long (enough) time, I know for a fact I did NOT get paid enough for all the work I did. I would be doing the job for 2-3 people and barely making ends meet. I would go above and beyond for a company that didn't care for me! I'd cover shifts, working 40+ hours a week for measly min wage. It wasn't worth it for me, but Starbucks could still be right for you!
    My whole experience was not bad. My manager in college was always understanding and accommodated my school schedule. She was encouraging and open minded. Not everyone is like that but if you're lucky you'll get a manager like mine!

    FAQs:
    How old are you?
    I’m 19 years old!
    Where are you from?
    I was born in Pennsylvania (in the US) moved to California when I was 6 and still live here. My family lives in the Bay Area but I go to college at UC Davis (near Sacramento). I moved back home to save money during quarantine lol
    My ORIGINS are Indian. My family is Tamil; we are from Chennai. My grandparents (all four of them) still live there!
    What do you study?
    I’m currently studying Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior (yes obnoxiously long name haha)
    How tall are you?
    I am 5 foot 3.75 inches (it’s hard to tell on camera tbh)
    What do you want to do career-wise?
    I’m not sure to be honest. I kind of want to do into patent law (lawyer for people who invent and create things) but I also wouldn’t mind editing videos for a living (not necessarily my own, although I really enjoy it and would love doing it freelance as I continue to get better at it)

    i’m so happy someone is talking about this. people think starbucks is such a great company that values it’s employees but honestly, it’s all PR. The reality is that baristas are underpaid, the company is constantly making new, unreasonable standards. Raising expectations but lowering labor hours. Not to mention, the customers are incredibly awful and we are expected to not just put up with gaslighting, and verbal abuse but we are expected to smile and give them free shit and reward awful, degrading behavior.

    • @ManjarithePandicorn
      @ManjarithePandicorn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      literally preach. the company acts like they are so righteous but they won’t provide enough labor cut hours bc they raised the wage a tiny bit which mind you isn’t not even close to enough to support oneself. customers are so insanely entitled. ofc there’s an occasional good one but when we get yelled at we have to just take it? uh no. the amount of shifts I’ve been asked to cover for a company that doesn’t care about individuals is insane.
      I hope you can move on to a job that values you as a person and the ideas and what you can bring to them. You’re to good for starbucks I wish you the very best 💕

    My store has SERIOUS issues with sexual harassment from customers. And while the SM tried to do what they could, the DM literally doesn’t care. We’ve had multiple cases of one customer being predatory towards teenage girls, then he screamed in my face, but we’re still supposed to create that ✨third place experience✨ for him

    I've been working at Starbucks for a month now. Our Starbucks is heavily understaffed I've had to close this place down 5 hours earlier for the past few days because half of the staff is out rn. I also wasn't properly trained at all I've had to learn how to do the register and bar all on my own. The place i work at has a Starbucks and we have all the recipes and the same ingredients. I run the front desk and the Starbucks at the same time kinda stressful. I never got trained to make any drinks I was just told "its all in the book" or "its so easy." I'm literally flipping through a whole book to find the specific drink a customer asked for and they never tell me "oh we actually don't have that drink or those ingredients here." And I'm running around the little cafe looking for the coconut milk💀. At least tell me that the ingredient I've been looking for 3 min is in a completely different bottle.

    I've been a partner since last year, however recently the stress of the job has been hitting me hard. The constant hyperfixiation on drive-thru times & churning out the drinks has made me feel like I'm not learning nor growing, just doing the same repetitive things for the sake of my higher-ups recieving the credit. Not to mention our SM consistently hiring newbies while simultaneously leaving us understaffed & cutting our hours due to sheer amount of new hires. It's ridiculous.

    Dude i've been working here for a little over a month and I just quit today. My manager wrote me up because I had to call in last week (the only time i've called in) and she got after me for texting people for coverage instead of calling even though she just told me to ask around. She said she was able to find coverage for me in 5 minutes and i asked her who came in for me and it was one of the first people i had texted and asked. They had told me they weren't able to cover for me. I called the store within plenty of time but she said it was short notice even though it wasnt. Im over here like well why tf would that matter if you found someone in 5 minutes anyways? Then she asks me what I've done so far in the store and i said i've only been put on drive thru since my training and I feel comfortable there it's just i tend to forget a few things. And she told me I'm not doing a very good job at all and she's not even going to think about moving me around like everyone else because I need to do better at drive thru. She told me the next time she has to tell me to do better I'm either getting a write up or getting fired. Mind you she'll schedule me two days one week, and then my next shift will be a whole week later. How am i supposed to remember or get better at my job if she's giving such little hours? My availability is also completely open so i'm not sure why she does that. And the whole time she was talking to me about all of this, she was saying "does that make sense?" "do you understand that?" like I'm such a stupid person and can't comprehend simple sentences. This was my last straw at this company as there have been plenty of minor things that have happened, but I was able to put up with. Such condescending, and passive agressive shift supervisors as well. I'm glad i won't be affiliated with that company anymore.

    Personally I believe in general that mothers should just be paid more because they are not working for themselves they are working for a family of either one or multiple children and that's just my opinion 🙄
    I know that this does not always work and that there should be qualifications and that people may still try to take advantage of that I know there's a lot of factors that could be concluded in that.
    But for honest hardworking moms I wish that there was more
    I JUST REALIZED !!!
    I don't want to be biased and the truth of the matter is are also are a lot of single hardworking men and dads and they should also be paid more as well there should be a thing that is done where they are able to look into these people's finances as a whole to see if they are getting income from other sources or other people for example CSupport.
    But truthfully I just believe you're not working for yourself you're really working for your baby your kid or your kids or your entire family and that should be taken into consideration I think that that's one of the things that lacks and why a lot of families and people are struggling so much because it does not make sense and it is completely out of balance

    The degree does not say online on it. I’m sorry, but claiming that it doesn’t translate in real life jobs is simply not true. I am with you, they don’t pay enough for what they expect but the benefits far outweigh almost every other company out there. The Starbucks ASU program is a great benefit. It’s never a bad idea to get free education. Use it. Then leave. I am sorry to hear about your friend though, I am in a similar situation. Been working in food and beverage for over 20 years and I am college educated with nearly 50K in debt. The problem lies within our disgusting capitalistic system. Starbucks is a good option for a lot of people.

      I’m not saying degrees don’t translate to real life jobs. I’m saying the degrees offered by the programs covered by starbucks don’t translate to real life jobs. Also, everyone I know had to take out personal loans to cover the “free” tuition bc how it works is you pay out of pocket and get reimbursed later if you don’t fail classes. I’m just saying this as the reality for the hundreds of ppl I’ve met who has the expectation of getting a salary job or more stable work and think ASU will guarantee that.

    You seem to be under the impression that employees working the same job should be entitled to getting raises on a regular basis. That's not how the world works. You don't automatically get paid more for doing the same job you did 7 years ago. Sure, you've improved your skillset overall, but you're still doing the same stuff you did 7 years ago...running the cashier, making drinks, handling inventory, cleaning tables, etc. But you're still basically the same worker from 6 years ago. You want to be paid more, take that experience from Starbucks and parlay it into a better job somewhere else. That's how it works.

      I have to disagree! Most of the people in my stores were not students- 90% of the staff in the 3 stores I worked at were full time , often with families and children. In fact, a lot of my coworkers either had a kid while in school and had to drop out or couldnt afford to pay for school anymore etc. Ideally, it should be a job for students to make money. But too many of my coworkers (I'd say 50-60%) get government aid, food stamps etc. to support their families. That's why i think benefits like childcare do matter. Esp bc starbucks is a big company I know a lot of employees would benefit from childcare

      I think starbucks does offer good perks to employees but financially they can offer way more. I know people with degrees working at starbucks living off food stamps cuz they don’t get paid enough. Starbucks was good for me at time and it’s good for my coworkers who needed healthcare if they just got off their patents but a lot of my coworkers have kids and families so starbucks isn’t enough to support them. For them even though it seemed like it was easy to work out isn’t not- working 40 hours to pay bills and eat while trying to go to school and doing internships and volunteering just isn’t reasonable. Unfortunately that is NOT all the job entails. It's also never saying a bad word to anyone even when you get yelled at by customers instead of them requesting stuff nicely. I've had customers throw drinks at me. No matter WHAT that is not something ANYONE should put up with.
      And also, it does deserve more than minimum wage. Dealing with people saying nasty things all day and being overworked when we should have double the staff- minimum wage does NOT cut it.

    • @jpbruner1
      @jpbruner1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ManjarithePandicorn I completely agree with you. Working in a service oriented occupation seems to be never appreciated as it should by those who benefit from the service. I, for one, believe that every person should work in some capacity that places them in service to others (grocery store clerk, food service, waiter, etc...) so that they develop the ability to empathize with those rendering the service. And you are right, assaulting someone by throwing a drink on them is a crime and should be prosecuted as such. However, the wonderful thing about our country is that we have the free will to decide what our labor is worth, and likewise, so does the employer who pays for the labor. If one's labor seems under valued by an employer, that employee should quit. I would suggest that it would be unwise to forgo any employment before seeking advanced skills and education that makes your labor more valuable to other potential employers. Skilled technical laborers and academically trained laborers with specialized knowledge are rare, and therefore can command a higher wage than someone who does not posses the aforementioned marketable skills. I'm sorry, but dealing with rude people is not a high level skill. Making coffee drinks at a Starbucks is not a high level skill that requires masterful technical know how. If you want to be valued, set yourself up to be valuable. No one can require anyone to work in fast food, just as no one can demand that employer pay a certain wage to any employee. It is an elective choice for both. Successful people work for their success and strive to better their marketability. Businesses do not owe their employees anything beyond payment for the job as accepted in the negotiation at the beginning of the course of employment.
