  • Days before high school graduation, Starbucks fired Katie for union organizing. She was 17, working as a barista, and living in her car. Her plans for a new apartment and college were put on hold. Now, Starbucks may have to pay her tens of thousands of dollars.

Recouping the cost of unlawful termination isn't enough. They need to be fined a hefty additional sum of this or there is no reason not to unlawfully terminate and try to get away with it if it comes out net neutral even when they're found to be in the wrong.

As a small business owner, *I* *LOVE* *UNIONS!*
I Love Unions because I need what EVERY small business owner needs... I need Customers; aka Consumers with Money. Union Workers organize and demand proper wages = Money. Union Workers have Money and therefore, can become my valuable Customers. Non-union Workers are too timid and/or ignorant to organize and are therefore, weaker and poorer. They choose to be poor slave and they are NOT going to become My (or Your) customers, they are a drag upon our entire economy.
I LOVE UNIONS BECAUSE UNIONS CREATE MIDDLE CLASS!
... and because I want Our country to have a Big and Strong Middle Class, thanks to Unions.

God I'm so glad I don't live in the US but in Europe. We might not be as rich as Americans on average, but we don't go bankrupt due to medical bills, we don't get sanctioned for being union members, quite the opposite.
IMO the main difference is that unions in Europe (or at least in Germany where I live) work WITH management to get the best result for everyone, including the employees. It's generally a constructive relationship and management very often listen to unions when it's about the future of the company. In Germany we do not care about short-term gain, we care about long-term sustainability of the company and that includes employees.

      @rickb3650 ปีที่แล้ว +3

" We might not be as rich as Americans on average, but we don't go bankrupt due to medical bills" Exactly.
The problem with averages is that they make it easy to hide the details. Most Europeans are far better off than most Americans. Rich Americans are quite a bit richer than rich Europeans, and that's what skews the average.

    • @-._.-KRiS-._.-
      @-._.-KRiS-._.- ปีที่แล้ว +1

Americans aren't rich. 82% of households have an income over $25,000. That's two people earning $6.01+/hr each. 62% of households have an income over $50,000. That's two people earning $12.02+/hr each. 34% of households have an income over $100,000. That's two people earning $24.04+/hr each. 1% of households have an income over $500,000. That's two people earning $120+/hr each.
As you can see, the majority of Americans are earning between $12 to $24/hr. 50% of Americans cannot cover a $400 emergency without going into some kind of debt, like a credit card or a payday loan. There isn't a single one bedroom apartment that anyone across America can rent while earning the federal minimum wage of $7.25/hr.
Remember, not only do Americans have to pay taxes they also have to pay monthly health insurance fees. There are separate fees for vision and dental insurance, as well. Car insurance, home/rental insurance, property taxes, life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, inheritance tax, plus all the stupid fees: atm fees, parking fees, event parking fees, birthing fees, burial fees, late fees, interest fees, fees to get a birth certificate after child is born, etc.
Our paychecks may look "bigger" compared to European salaries but thousands get taken out in taxes/fees for the average worker and what we take home gets spent on additional taxes/fees plus housing, food, utilities and retirement savings/investments (legalized gambling). We have several 2 bedroom homes in my city in Idaho going for $600,000. I was looking at properties in cities around London and the most expensive I found were no more than 340,000 pounds. And it came with a circular glass sunroom and a fully fleshed out garden. You guys don't do square footage so I couldn't tell how big it was but it had THREE bedrooms! That sunroom was gorgeous. We don't have sunrooms like that in the States. The best we have are rectangular porches with screens stapled onto the posts and a covered roof so the only light that gets in is from the screens. Also, you guys don't have to refrigerate your eggs. I could save so much fridge space if I didn't have to refrigerate eggs.

Well Starbucks is an entry level job. Like tons of people in many jobs, people aged out of the range of entry level are working entry level jobs. Companies need to adapt to reality. With entry level wages, unreliable tips, often long hours worked, long commutes, and unreliable housing, all of which comes with entry level jobs- I’m not saying should come with I’m saying tend to come with- companies, in order to hire responsibly, need to adopt their rules to these needs. Because this is America, outside of local and state and federal laws these things don’t get regulated or corrects automatically… it’s fair enough to unionize. Starbucks could view it as an opportunity instead of an impediment, an opportunity to stay competitive in a world saturated with entry level food service jobs. … If they’re unhappy about clothes they could provide uniforms- a nice white shirt and nice pants and sweater looks good on anyone. … They should pay for this themselves. … America does have a tradition of being pro union and of union jobs being a path to success for people, not small success but the kind of success that buys homes and supports families. … a termination that is right or wrong is bad on a job references list, because you usually want to stay a year, so if one is terminated it potentially impacts them long past leaving their former job. …

So you should have been fired. I had a similar situation with a few co-workers years ago and without blinking "THEY" were gone. When you start jobs like these you have to understand that most of them (employer) are not unionized and if you turn around and you try to make a union the owners don't want that so I have no sympathy for you. As for the moron wearing union pins that's asking for trouble right from the get go. Society has really become pretty uneducated in the last 20 years..SMH

    • @-._.-KRiS-._.-

Not if they are emancipated. Even if not, no cop is going to arrest an adult for kicking out an almost 18-year-old. My mom kicked me out at 17 so I moved in with my dad for a year. My mom was upset with me because I'd stay late at work. She didn't like me coming home at 2 in the morning. I would always try to stay as late as I could because I didn't want to be at home with her. Sounds like this girl might not have had her father close by or his support. I know it's illegal to be homeless, but if she plays it safe, she won't be bothered by the cops much. As a now 40-year-old woman, if I didn't have a kid, I'd live in my car. These $1600 rents for one bedroom apartments are insane.

Because they're counting on getting away with it. When you're a giant corporation, having to pay a fine that is a tiny fraction of your annual revenue is just "the cost of doing business". Corporates do shit like this all the time. If the cost of complying with the law is greater than the fine for breaking it, they'll break it.

Schultz should be ashamed for allowing his “baby” to be taken over by a greedy, grubbing exec team.
There’s a $.40 difference between 3 stores within 6 miles of eachother. The noise volume is brutal. Hell, McD’s is quieter. The stores are cavernous and about as welcoming as a blister.
A shame, as the kids working there are hard workers.
    Corporate greed at it’s worst.
