    Two things you got wrong about the BT46B fan car:
    1 - it wasn't banned by the FIA, but actually withdrawn by the team itself (or to be more accurate, Bernie, because he became the "boss" of FOCA and he feared that if he didn't withdraw the car the other teams could put his position at risk);
    2 - it didn't create more downforce the faster it traveled. Since the fan was directly connected to the engine, the higher it revved, the faster the fan spun, which consequently created higher downforce. That's why the Brabham drivers used a lower gear than usual on corners, so they could turn at higher revs = higher downforce (I heard that somewhere I can't remember). In fact, because of that, the car actually created equal amounts of downforce whether it was moving or standing still
    Other than that, great video, like all the other. Congrats

    Don't get me wrong I love this channel, you made a mistake at the 1978 Swedish GP Burnie pulled out the the fan car. They were not disqualified, that's what everyone thinks.

    • @erab9514
      @erab9514 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right. It was disqualified after that race, but it won in Sweden.

    • @truantray
      @truantray ปีที่แล้ว

      @@erab9514 it was never disqualified, it was banned. While F1 fans think it was some kind of innovation, it was just a version of a Chaparral 2J design from 1970. That design was also banned, for the same reasons.

    Nelson Piquet in the Brabham BMW (82-85) is one of the most iconic F1 driver/team combinations for me (others being Senna in the JPS Lotus, Prost in the Marlboro MacLaren, Schumacher in the Ferrari and Vettel in the Red Bull).

    Very informative and enjoyable. Brabham have always been my favorite team.
    There is something that has puzzled me, perhaps you can clarify. As you point out in the Williams video, the BMW-powered cars of both Williams and Brabham had similar blue and white liveries with a stylized BMW "kidney grille" on the nose, so it would seem that this is essentially a BMW livery. But Brabham debuted it on the Cosworth-powered BT49, which was before they switched to BMW. Was the livery designed in anticipation of BMW engines which were delayed for three years? Or is it just coincidence that they created a livery that perfectly matched BMW?

    • @f1liveryhistories290
      @f1liveryhistories290  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's a good question. Despite debuting on the DFV-powered Brabham, those nosecone decals somehow became a BMW F1 thing (or at least that's how it seems). I might be mistaken, but as far as I can tell the nosecone decals that were seen on the BMW-Williams & BMW-Sauber cars are a shout-out to the BMW-Brabham days.
      Long story short, I don't really have an answer for that.

    • @delahayenator
      @delahayenator 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its a coincidence. Its just Gordon Murray aesthetics, before BMW was even in sight as you have noticed correctly. There is an interview where he talks about the white blue livery design and how he came up with the nose design.

    as a kid I was a fan of Brabham during the mid eighties, my father brought me to a store to buy me an my brother a F1 car model, while it was clear most of the people would go for ferrari, I liked that livery... unfortunately Brabham didn't perform well during those season, if I remember correctly Patrese was the driver.

    Bernie tried to get Lauda to drive the BT55 but Lauda refused when Bernie only offered him a contract on a "cash for points" agreement. Not only was the car unreliable, it was aerodynamically dodgy. I remember when Warwick got a puncture in practice in Austria and the car flipped and ended up upside down.

    Was Brabham team during Jack Brabham´s racing career as driver until 1970 officially an Australian team ? Or was it a British team from very beginning ?

      The chassis was always built in the UK but the Repco engines were built in Australia. This is one of the reasons the team switched to the Cosworth DFV: the Repco factory was just too far away (in the days before the internet, remember).
