  • The building of a brand new international airport on St Helena is one of the biggest construction projects happening at the moment in the Southern Hemisphere. Find out what it's taking South Africa's Basil Read to bring this 3.5 billion Rand project to fruition.
Saint Helena - Island background information
The island of St Helena, an overseas territory of the United Kingdom (UK), lies in the South Atlantic Ocean, is of volcanic origin and has an area of 47 square miles. It is over 4,000 miles from the UK, 700 miles south-east of Ascension Island, and 1,700 miles NNW from South Africa (Cape Town). The island's total population is around 4,000, of whom about 900 live in the capital, Jamestown. The climate is kept mild and equable by the south-east trade winds and temperatures range from 14-32 degrees centigrade in the summer and 14-26 degrees centigrade in winter. The economy is small and is mainly based on offshore employment, fisheries licences, agriculture, fishing and more recently a small volume of tourism. Most commodities are imported and St Helena relies heavily on UK Aid to support the standard of living of the population.

Of all of the mid Atlantic islands, I would prefer to live on St Helena the most. Especially now that it has an airport.

What about the airport being build as a refill base for the defense of islands like the Falklands etc.?

Seems like a waste of 3 billion pounds. I'd be a pissed off tax payer. That tiny island won't be able to break even with profits at that airport in its entire lifetime.

I can't believe they're fucking up the Island of St. Helena. Part of the charm of going there was that it was practically impossible to get out to and that it had hardly changed in 200 years. This is not cool, not cool at all.

If it stays so isolated with no future then in a few decades the island will be filled with old people and no young people. Then eventually this island will die out.

      ARVIN
Keep it isolated, and the young people won't be able to leave. No problem.

Judith Shipstad Well then where will the resources come from? the only resources the island have is rock, people, and maybe some fish. Not even land, its a tiny island.

Judith Shipstad They do leave, they all the youths end up studying in the UK and never returning permanently.
