This is just the best video ever . We have an airport and a plane has landed . We have a shop and some brought a sandwich . I so want to move there . It's a beautiful little island .

The Saint Helena accent is fascinating. It's like a hybrid of South African, British, Australian and American. And each individual seems to lean into one of those more than the others. Love you guys!

@@colors6692 Oh yes they are. There is a teacher and her husband from the States who is a superintendent in the islands school system.
Also there is a guy from Florida who has a little organic greenhouse and he is growing some exotic plants.
@@colors6692 its mainly south hemisphere English with a hint of forced ESL queens English.
i Guess with the tiny 4000 population they are educated by English teachers and jr diplomats who fly in to the island from the UK they pick up on the middle class English home counties accent.
What I'd give for such a friendly, peaceful place to live for my kids! 🤯

What's with some of the comments of ridicule aimed at the islanders? They obviously are not living in a metropolis, so you can't expect big news. They do however seem to have a serene lifestyle, and good for them.

The thing is, if they don't an incident happens, heads will roll.
I'm from Jersey, and the politicians all arse cover themselves. About 15 years ago, England were playing Portugal in either a Euro Cup or World Cup competition, and Portugal won and a riot broke out. In the Channel Islands, we have lots of Portuguese immigrants. Every time England face Portugal in Football, the local government actually brings over riot police from the UK to be on the safe side. Because of this one incident, 15 years ago, they bring riot police over just to be on the safe side, despite no incident happening since. Everyone complains saying it's a waste of money, but what is going to happen if they didn't have the riot police on standby, and a riot broke out, everyone would be complaining why didn't they have riot police??? Then heads would start rolling.
It's the same incident here. All British territories must have law enforcement armed in case of extreme circumstances. No one wants a shooting to happen, and the local territory or dependency was not equipped to deal with it, and suddenly a memo from 5 years before that appears explaining that they were not prepared for it. People will lose their jobs over it.
So, what year is it in St. Helena, where ear piercings make the news?

Calm down guys, Tara Wortley is taken and she is a mom. Her maiden name is Tara Thomas. She is a very respected manager of a family-owned business on the island, The Rose and Crown, an upscale wine shop among other things.
The tourist never came. Just a few here and that. Sad but true. Heard its very expensive flight.
Coming from Norway I'm rather used to these kinds of innocent news shows, at least regionally. I do envy their simplistic lifestyle in a tropical environment, although I suspect this kind of island life doesn't come without difficulties.

What is the typical Saint Helena accent like? The woman sounds like a weird mix of American, Australian, South African, English, while the others sound more northern English, but dunno how many were born and bred there.

Derek has a typical Saint accent :) similar to the person reading the menu in the sandwich bar, Tara & the sports news reader all have the St Helenian accent :). The only language on the island is English and it is indeed unique :). The first news reporter and the policeman explaining the taser gun have regional English accents so they may be visitors.

@@krisgillett7273 The presenter in the video was down there on the island for a couple of years I think, then he went back to the UK to go back to school. So he is not a native Saint. That would be August Graham.
The accents vary because the natives are exposed to lots of UK born diplomats, civil servants and teachers who are only on Helena for a short time (to get brownie points with Whitehall and work experience before moving on to become ambassadors etc like the copper at the start of the video) who themselves come from different regions of the UK hence why natives pick up all of the regional accents. one group of people might've had a teacher from oxford with home counties accent , another from Newcastle with geordie accent

Fascinating yet sad to see as the natives of the island are virtually entirely made up of descendants of English soldiers who r aped African (plus some Indian) slaves in the late 18th century hence the linage of multiple generations of mixed race ppl.
R *pe of slaves was not uncommon in the new world but unlike the USA, Caribbean or South America with St helanas tiny population you can easily trace their family tree back to the English solider or settler.
Thats Ironic as St Helena is still a UK colony held onto by the British who throw money at the island because it is a great strategic south Atlantic outpost if there is an outbreak of war.
I blame Trump for this.
