    My dream is to visit St Helena island. As a young man in 1983, I was stationed in Ascension Island, St Helena's sister island. Now as an old man I have the cash to finally go.

      Maybe you should, the flights are twice a week from November. Its not that hard to get there anymore👍🏻

      @@KumarKumar-kq3qc There are no flights to Falklands from St Helena. The only other destination from St Helena is a 1 monthly flight to Ascension Island. Falkland flights from the UK transit at Ascension.

    The first time I knew about St. Helena was from my European history classes at university.
    We all know that Napoleon was exiled and eventually died on the island. His first exile was on a small island off Italy (Elba), but he managed to escape and plunge Europe into to war again.
    After fighting in freezing Russia and in the deserts of Egypt Napoleon must have liked the climate of St. Helena. The only thing he might have missed was French cuisine.
    I would love to visit St. Helena someday, and to stand in the place where Napoleon passed the time until his death.

    When I lived on the island (mid 1960's) Saturday was the busiest day of the week! I guess the shops no longer open on Saturday?

    • @DiscoverWithTwo
      @DiscoverWithTwo  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @johncoyle5142 This was on the day we arrived, a Saturday afternoon. Shops are open in the morning and it’s busier, unfortunately by the time you reach Jamestown after landing everything is closed other than Annes Place. I believe also one supermarket opened in the evening.

    • @johncoyle5142
      @johncoyle5142 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@DiscoverWithTwo Ok, the shops used to stay open until 9.00pm! That gave along day to staff, but enabled country people to come in and shop and gossip. Not everyone had cars in those days: I have one photo of a young lad walking his donkey loaded with shopping in the late afternoon, just about to leave the main road in the Levelwood area.

    The tradition was that Saturday and Wednesday were market days. Fresh produce was available on those two days so those mornings were the busiest days of the week. All the fresh produce were sold by mid morning or lunchtime so the markets closed by lunchtime

    Hi,
    St Helena is on my bucket list. Do you have to buy any health insurance or get any special permit to be able to enter the island? Thanks

    • @DiscoverWithTwo

      You have to buy health insurance (you can find the details here : www.sthelenatourism.com/information/). No permit is required but some nationalities need a visa. You can find more information about all of it in our video here : th-cam.com/video/XvMQDOTgviQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ntHX-zALpVeO8RZl

    Can you share the costs of your travel including food? Id like to go there some day 😢

    • @DiscoverWithTwo
      @DiscoverWithTwo  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Off course we can. Flight prices start at 700€/PP for a return fare from Johannesburg. A stay on the island ranges anywhere from 400-1500€ per room depending where you stay for a week. A meal in a restaurant would be 10-20€, supermarkets have plenty of food also at a reasonable price. Our car rental was around 20€/day. All hiking trails are free, snorkelling with whale sharks was about 50€ including equipment, there is a small fee for visiting the inside of Plantation house and Longwood House. As you can see the flight is the most costly as there is only one airline flying there and the isolated location adds to the costs of the flight operation.

    Oh boy! I can see it happening. Before you know it, Ryanair will be offering cheap flights to St Helena and the island will be overrun with Instagram influencers and their selfie sticks "preaching mindfulness and practicing abundance". Jacob's Ladder will turn into a complete stampede style shit-show with the occasional overzealous selfie-taker falling off the top while attempting to take the perfect selfie.

    • @DiscoverWithTwo
      @DiscoverWithTwo  25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The Best Comment so far🤣 the locals do want more tourism but it’s just not the easiest place to reach, also the weather does disturb the flights often leading to postponed flights for days so I doubt Ryanair would be interested in that🫣 For now it’s a great places with little tourists, very quiet as we love it😍

      @@DiscoverWithTwo Makes sense. I'm definitely interested in checking out St Helena since it's off the beaten path. I don't do Barcelona, Porto, Venice, and Santorini style destinations with stampede crowds. If you're interested in other remote destinations with stunning scenery check out the Torngats, Southern Lakes in the Yukon, Mt Assiniboine, and Kluane.
