    My own Oma passed away 18 years ago when I was 12. She cared for me lovingly my entire early childhood so I never had to go to daycare. I miss her daily. I'm so happy to have found this channel looking to find recipies for the German food I miss so much. Thank you for giving me a piece of my own Oma and heritage back. You are just as dear and sweet and she was and you remind me of her. Lots of love and hugs!

    Oma, yours is my favorite youtube channel to watch! My mother is full blooded German and I am trying some of your recipes for her. I just know she will be proud! My grandmother (who passed before I had the pleasure of knowing her) would be so proud of me also! I grew up eating stuffed bell peppers and goulash, recipes handed down from my grandmother to my mother, and now to me. You warm my heart, and I can't help but feel like you are a part of my family just from watching you! Thank you so much for sharing your recipes and stories of your life. Thank you for triggering my nostalgic childhood memories of cooking with my mother. God Bless You and your beautiful family!!

    I came across this and I was so lucky. I had sauerkraut, a huge tub of sourcream and very lean too lean pork loin. The sauerkraut i had was very cheap just like vinigar no flavor very acidic. I added a little brown sugar to cut the acid and carraway seed and sweet hungarian paprika. This came out awesome. It transformed an unworkable piece of meat into tender juicy bites of flavor. The sour cream completely transformed it. It hit my german food cravings just right. Also brought back sweet memories of my hungarian relatives. Thank you so much.

    Good to see you cooking another one of your Hungarian dishes. Reminds me of my Hungarian grandmother so many years ago. You mentioned fried bread. Do you ever make that? If so, would love to see your method. My daughter and son-in-law had fried bread with garlic and sour cream when they were in Budapest and they loved it. My grandmother taught me how to make her fried cakes when I was a girl, and even though I don't make them very often, when I do it takes me right back to her kitchen with so many memories. Seeing you cooking in your housecoat brings good memories to my mind. Thank you Oma!

      Where is red paprika the most important ingredient from Hungary?

  • @OutnBacker
    @OutnBacker 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I just made a big batch of this today. My mother was Austrian and was a fantastic cook. She made things just like this - no written recipes, no fiddling with a dash of this or that. Just memory and a good sense of what food should taste like when it hits the buds. My mom made the red style with lots of paprika. She added a bit of water if the meat wasn't enough for liquid. Also, she added boiled potatoes so it would go 'round the table more than once! With the kraut, my mom rinsed it well in cold water in a collander before adding it to the meat. That reduces the sourness a lot. She would also grate in a raw potato to thicken the liquid into a sauce. very stew-like.

    Beautiful! In Germany we call this dish "Szegediner Gulasch", named after the city of Szeged, mentioned in the video. So, I wonder if Oma is of "Donauschwaben" descendant - a German ethnic group from south-east hungary and western Romania which belonged to Austria-Hungary until 1918. A very beautiful region.

    Do you rinse the sauerkraut to remove some of the salt? When I cook one can of sauerkraut, I rinse and add chopped onion, chopped small apple, peppercorns, and can of water. Served with pork and mashed potatoes (sauerkraut on top of potatoes) and gravy. Your recipe will let me have much the same without waiting for New Years Day! Hooray! Looking forward to trying yours! Danke.
