Boat Picking off the Side of the Road - What Does $11,500 to $79,000 Get You?

  • Anyone who has shopped for a new or used boat knows the challenge, especially if looking for a cheap boat. They are just not many to be found. I spent the morning of November 15, 2020 driving the roads of the North Fork of Long Island hoping to find an affordable boat. I found 3 (none listed on any of the major boat sales sites). Let me know what you think.

    Great content and would love to see more videos like this...
    I would like a little more explanation on why you are not a fan of the Steiger craft? On future videos it would be useful for your opinion to be followed by more of explanation of why... I realize some of the content many people know but some of the viewers may be new to boating. Also I personally highly value your opinions especially based on the amount of experience you have chartering.
    Thanks again for posting

      Thank you for the kind words and you make an excellent point Scott. I really should have explained it better. My concern was more around the inboard outboard than the brand itself. I am a big fan of outboards because you can tilt them out of the water we’re not using them, presuming you are wet slipping your boat. You can’t really do that with inboard outboard‘s and they tend to be more prone to corrosion and require a lot more maintenance in my experience. Steiger craft is an excellent boat and locally built to boot!

    I had a 1990 F23 center console for 5 years. It had a 250 on an offshore bracket. Didn’t matter how I trimmed the engine or adjusted the trim tabs it pounded like a son of a gun in anything over 2 foot seas. I sold it because I was tired of being beat up. However, it was very stable at rest and the high freeboard made you feel secure.

    Spot burning is definitely an issue. Fortunately I've learned how to mask background surrounding for the most part where I feel comfortable enough that the location won't be sacrificed. If you want, I can show you some time a very user friendly app that you can do this and an amazing amount more right from your phone or if you prefer pc. It definitely takes more time to mask thise areas in footage but once you get it down, it goes much faster and is less time consuming.

    • @jiggingjerks
      @jiggingjerks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The CV is a much better fishing boat. The ride of the Everglades though, is something you need to experience. It’s a heavy, heavy boat with no stringer system like most other boat brands have. It’s literally a one piece foam infused boat and it has the characteristics of a planing Hull mixed with the ride of a full displacement hall. I wish they made a Fishing friendly version of it LOL. If you want more creature comforts, Everglades all the way. If you want a more fishing friendly boat, then I would go CV or Contender

    for most of the areas you guys fish through out the season, do you need a boat that does 50mph to make going there worthwhile.? for instance my last boat did 24knots wide out, most of the time i was at 14knots and was comfortable navigating at that speed. If i had to fish southside of montauk from greenport it would take 2 plus hours while your boats probably under 1 hour. how often does the sea conditions allow for those speeds in those areas?

    • @jiggingjerks
      @jiggingjerks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I typically cruise at 38 to 40 to Montauk. Leaving from Greenport and going through Peconic bay then gardeners bay, the seas are generally stable enough for me to maintain those speeds. In the ocean it’s a little less. I completely hear you though. It would be very tough, even if more comfortable, to cruise out under 20 getting there.

      Right on! As soon as I saw the inside of the Privateer, I said “bingo - a new Skinner boat”!

      Bob - you’re better off waiting a year for prices to cool off. They’re just insane right now. In that range, you’re probably looking at 20 years old with older power

    Do you expect boat prices to go back down?

      Yes. I think a vaccine will accelerate that to some extent as people will be able to more readily travel again. Unfortunately, the other way boat prices will come down is if the economy takes a hit.....

    You have crappy boats. Look in the lake st Clair area for a good taken care of boat, most are rich and hardly use them and highly maintained.
