Fantastic video, great tip about the cord over the needle to help decrease gap and laddering! After watching both your tutorial videos I find myself wishing that you would make a series of videos (or one long one) that goes from measurement, cast-on, ribbing, leg, heel flap, heel turn, gusset, foot and bindoff using a plain vanilla sock pattern. New sock knitters like me (age 70, gay, married for 5 years, togrether 35 years) really appreciate the time you take to explain what you are doing as well as provide anecdotes about how you came to knitting in general and sock knitting in particular. I'm sure I'm not the only 70 year old (retiring in September) who are going back to knitting or learning for the first time. Your patient guidance would be a godsend.

German twisted cast on is my go-to CO, but I had never seen it as a rib nor a long-tail method.
For sock knitting I’m a DPN girl. I tried magic loop but didn’t like the tension/laddering that happens at the stress points.

After stopping and starting magic loop socks at least four times, this is just exactly what I was looking for. Your tutorial is the perfect pace, level of detail and I’m an English knitter as well. Thank you, Justin. I’ll look forward to your heel and toe videos.
I hope this is not your last sock video. You are very easy to understand and follow. While some of your techniques seem to work well for you, I need to use a few modifications. I find that, as a continental knitter, it is far easier to hold the needles together when knitting across. However, your suggestion to go under the needle when starting the row is a game changer. I would pay for complete sock tutorial from cuff to toe from you. Thanks again.

You make that cast on very clear, I think I can do it even if I have to change hands. The joy of being lefthanded, nobody ever shows it like I can do it without have to change hands. I am so happy my grandmother was lefthanded to so she could teach me.

For me, picking up stitches on socks is the most angst making part of knitting socks. I'll have to give your method a try. I like the way you close the gusset hole. I do something similar but your way looks much easier! Thank you!
Thanks Michael! Someone suggested sliding a small dpn through all of the stitches at once and just knitting off of that. I tried it with the second sock and it worked really well also! Happy knitting ❤️🧦

So cool! The top to have that ease is what I am looking for. I have not as of yet made any socks! It’s called sockaphobia! So, I have been watching countless video’s and eureka! Finally my search is over! Taking the recommendations for the yarn to use and do love the circular method. Now I have knit sweaters to mittens and gloves but socks lets do it! Thank you for the ease in your instructions and your calming voice is a great plus in learning. No pressures right!

Thanks once again Justin for another great tutorial, you really are a good teacher and your voice is very pleasant to listen to. I love learning news things lately, but when I don’t feel like it, I go to my favourite no brainer methods also. I also will use my favourite techniques when using someone’s pattern if I don’t feel like learning anything new. It just depends on my mood. I’m not sure why, but I don’t like magic loop. I’ve tried the 9 inch circulars, they are too small for my old hands. I’ve always loved dpns but lately, I really like using two circular needles for socks, mittens and hats. For some reason, I never have the laddering when using two circulars. Thanks again and I look forward to the next Bearded Purl Podcast. You Two are just too cute.
That’s great Lynda! I actually learned to knit socks 2 at a time on 2 circular needles!! The main reason I do everything magic loop is then I don’t have to keep track of so many needles 🤣🤣❤️🧦

All I can say is WOW!! I have been knitting for over thirty years, and I have watched a TON of tutorial videos on the German Twisted cast on, and I have never seen one that shows the knit and the purl variations. Hi! Thank you for the tutorial! I was familiar with the German Twisted CO however, I did not know about the purl way! Excited to use it for casting on hats mittens etc. I won't use it for socks, cuz I do them toe up! I usually use Cat Bhordi's whirlpool toe, then Wendy D. Johnson's gusset heel, (or FLK heel) then EZ sewn BO or tubular BO. Happy knitting! 🖖

Very odd to see “fuzzy” hands showing the knitting 😊. Just learned this technique from the only male instructor I follow, but his hands aren’t fuzzy. Just struck me funny 😊. Nice tutorial… was just checking out the German cast on that I learned from him the other day and wanted to see if others did it the same. I believe you do the purl part differently… will have to check again as I was paying more attention to the knit part the first time out.

I get what you say about the process becoming so automated that you forget steps when you have to go slowly. I have the same problem sometimes starting the car - don't get me out of step whatever you do! I loved watching this. I am a traditional knitter trying new things. Thank you so much.
