I'm willing to bet Brad Pitts character "Rusty" was at one point a heavy smoker who quit, so he needs to eat and snack constantly to counter his old addiction.
And to be honest, from what I've heard, Brad Pitt himself was/is a heavy chain smoker, but when he shoots movies, he wants to stay healthy and be more energetic for the sake of his acting, so for the time of the shoot he doesn't smoke. But that results in him being so hungry, that he has to eat or snack, as you say, almost constantly. Most of the directors know this habit of him, so they bring food into the different scenes on purpose for Brad to eat! And that's also one of the reasons you will almost always see him chew gum on red carpets or in his personal life! :)
I think he added the trait because they say eating or chewing means you are relaxed. In stressful situations your body naturally kills hunger and the need to pee and poo. But since rusty is so cool all the time and he doesn’t seem stressed even when doing something that can get him killed brad Pitt wanted to visualize that by having him eat in stressful scenes to portray he was relaxed. I think.
A cool thing to note, is that during the heist, he's not eating at all. Which I thinks hints towards the severity of the situation and Rusty's complete focus.

I can't think of a good example off the top of my head but he does it in a lot of movies. For example, if he'd thrown the rest of that burger as soon as he saw Clooney coming out of the prison, that would have been totally on-brand for him.

I never noticed the cut where the overfilled whiskey glass he's drinking from in the poker scene is the same one when it cuts to him at the bar, nearly empty. Clever use of a prop to indicate passage of time and how thoroughly Rusty is getting smashed to cope with the empty-headed movie stars.
I thought #5 was cotton candy. It typically comes in a clear plastic bag now, not on a paper cone, like it used to. #6 (at the track) is either Italian Ice or Granita. I'm leaning toward Granita.

Yeah! If broken down, these scenes contain quite a few continuity errors. :D But given the fact that there's a looot of cuts in there and the other scenes fit almost to the tick, it's quite impressive. I find the Ocean's movies to be edited pretty good in general! Love the style! :)
I had never known about this until I heard it from my friend Chris today. I wrote a novel where one of the main characters is always eating and a couple of reviews have noted that it distracted them, and in one case pissed them off. I started wondering if I should tone down the eating, but if Brad Pitt did it, I'm keeping it. Heck, maybe I'll win the luck lottery and Pitt will want to play my character in a movie some day. An idea for future videos definitely is to make it into a series, if people want to watch that, and maybe make a mashup of all of Brad Pitt's eating scenes in all of his movies. But I think that will be a project that required a lot more time! :D
