- This is one of Peter’s favorite conversations.
In Regent’s Park, London, Peter Boghossian conducted a Spectrum Street Epistemology with two children, a twelve-year-old boy and his younger sister. Peter began with claims about science, a topic both children preferred. After the young man demonstrated an extraordinary intellect, Peter upped the ante, presenting complicated claims regarding the limits of science and its relationship to morality and emotion.
At the end of the discussion, Peter asked the young man if he would rather have a life guided by reason or emotion. He responded, “If you just have cold, hard reason without any emotion and human feeling, what does that make you? You won't be able to make kind decisions; you'll just be essentially a robot.”

I'm sure it wasn't intentional, but your tone, and manner of speech was so patronizing as to be irritating, near insulting. This is a pet peeve of mine. I cannot stand when people talk to kids as if they're puppies anymore than I do when a nurse walks into a patient's room as does the same.

@@stevegee7623try to add-lib this sort of stuff in an open-ended way that’s stimulating, keeps a child interested, and is age-appropriate. It’s tougher than it looks. He got the boy engaged. Everybody has a complaint about something online but I’m not seeing what could be different. I’m into this stuff for my own kids and I suppose there is material somewhere on how to do this for various ages. Anyway, I thought this was great!
@drpeterboghossian - Did you know beforehand that this boy was particularly bright? (ie: Were you in front of a school where gifted kids were walking out the door or something?) I've seen a few 'on the street interviews' in the states asking high school and college age kids the most basic of questions, and they had NO idea of the answer. "What country was the Queen of England from?" "When was the war of 1812?" They couldn't tell the time on an analogue clock. Depressing as could be; I couldn't finish listening.

In fact, at private schools they boost the poor performers’ marks because rich parents are not going to pay a school that doesn’t give high enough marks for their kids to get into university.
@@karagi101 Eh, I know a lot of kids going to these types of schools, I grew up with them myself, I have friends who are teachers at these schools, and this kid does not stand out from many I have known growing up / know currently. Part of it is having that international background as well, where the parents speak another language, and the kids already have 2 languages if not more. Home life and holidaying abroad in the types of places they do, being surrounded with literature and music, etc. I'm not talking about general grammar school education.
I don't think he is exceptional among his cohort, which again, I'd guess is much wealthier than even grammar-school kids. But hey we can disagree on that.
@@L_Martin I live in Toronto. Half the population are immigrants, including myself. Half the population speaks at least one 2nd language. We are all taught French in school too. We travel back to home countries all the time. Still… see little difference between public and private school kids’ knowledge. Perhaps the issue is with the quality of the public schools in your area.

It's not adults who participate in Peter's street epistemology. It's adults in general.
Most adults (Not just the ones Peter talks to) turn off the inquisitive /introspective side of their mind.
It is that or a private school in which they already had at length this exact same conversation. It is really improvable that he deduced it all by himself

They all have private tutors and private schooling.

It was very cute but I do think the wisdom was the best part as it's the less common. But it's different focuses, I agree it is lovely to see an older brother standing into his role as a guide and protector for his little sister for sure, beautiful ❤

If those adult were "educated" at a place that has safe spaces then you can assume they never left the toddler phase of their life.

Peter just showed us that Street Epistemology can-and should-be conducted in public education.
It could be used as a foundation for critical thinking.
While in theory it could be a great exercise in developing critical thinking, keep in mind that Peter, or whoever is conducting the activity, very much steers the direction it akes with the questions. Given the capture of education by woke ideology in most cases you wouldn't achieve much. It's very much reliant on a gifted and open-minded teacher, not a common thing sadly.
Absolutely. The only problem is “Public Education” has nothing to do with critical thought or educating. I wish it did though.
And before that, Socrates, who lived in ancient Greece around 469-399 BCE, did the same. He engaged in open dialogues with people from various backgrounds, questioning and discussing fundamental ideas such as ethics, justice, and the nature of knowledge.
Socrates' approach (known, unsurprisingly, as the "Socratic method") involved asking questions to stimulate critical thinking, and to encourage individuals to examine their own beliefs and assumptions. By engaging in conversations in public spaces, such as the agora in Athens, Socrates played a crucial role in making philosophical inquiry accessible to a broader audience. His method of philosophical inquiry and the public nature of his discussions laid the groundwork for the later development of Western philosophy.
This doesn't take away from the value of what Peter is doing. Instead, and perhaps somewhat disappointingly, it speaks to the long history of humans who've had access to philosophy for at least 2,500 years and yet, even today... despite primary and even some university level learning, we still see a ghastly deficit in critical thinking among the general population.
One of my favorite statements of 'the problem' was by Asimov in his 1980 essay titled "A Cult of Ignorance". There are several juicy bits worth focusing on but the one I imagine most familiar to people is where he wrote this:
_"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that _*_'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge'._*
British education would not allow for open and honest dialogue. Its like indoctrination in that sense.
This was like getting "hope for the future" mainlined directly into my eyeball.
I sure hope so. Let's hope the next 10 years of emasculating and screaming about his white privilege don't break him down. I have a feeling he'll be able to take it. :)

As a person of faith, I do see a trend that science is being taught as the new God. Also, the illusion that if you master the understanding of science, it gives you some sort of control over things.
Incredibly intelligent kids. I hope the boy realizes that if science lets him down, God will still be there. Seems a bit like we are now worshipping the creation, and not the creator.

@@Diametricallyopposed00 I think it'd be nice for schools to stop omitting the religious aspects of scientific discovery, such as noting that the man who theorized the famous Big Bang Theory was a Catholic priest. It leads to students believing that science and religion are separate categories, but they have both been intertwined since the beginning and go hand-in-hand with one another.

@@Eilfylijokul Well…I’m little Miss nobody from the arsehole of the west of Scotland and my ‘Gen Alpha’ son, who’s a little rough around the edges and not quite so articulate, has very similar views.
He's the exception not the rule. Its amazing what 1 million dollars invested into a kid can do for them by the time their 12. But the kid is also very smart/bright, I don't want to take away from his inquisitive mind, but its more that it compounds with good environment.
His mother sounds German, and his accent does not entirely sound local, so I wouldn't be surprised if he lives part of his life in Europe and part of it in England. I think there's a high chance his parents are rather rich and sending the children to very posh private schools.

@@CleverGirlAAH moral relativism seems to be slightly implied by the kid’s reference to people’s differing gut feelings, and gut feeling as the (partial) source of morality.
Contrastingly, moral realism argues there is a “true” morality out there, regardless of our gut feeling.
Could be something religious, or more akin to math, or both.
Utilitarianism turns morality in a partially empirical question: whatever leads to the most good for the most people, must be moral.
So the kid’s reference to science helping us decide moral questions might suggest he has a utilitarian position, but that’s not explicit in the video.
Summarizing
Moral realism: moral facts exist, independently of our feelings and perceptions.
Moral relativism: there are no moral truths, just claims dependent on culture or feeling.
Utilitarianism: there is one moral law, we can use science and reasoning to apply it.
Hope this helps and doesn’t come across as condescending, which happens quickly when writing about topics like these.

I think Peter did a great job asking challenging questions and listening to the answers from this young man.
In the beginning, I was sure he was just parroting phrases he'd heard, but I very quickly realised that these were his own internalised thoughts. He's clearly thought about this topic before, his answers were measured and well-reasoned. Let's hope that one day, kids like this will be the rule, not the exception.

Such good parenting. She's really paying attention to who they are and nurturing their evolution. And they are loved and happy. This made my day!
My favorite part was the playful "tough love" at the end. Hahaha. Proof she doesn't treat them like fragile butterflies. Something you don't see a lot from those who would likely claim some form of higher intelligence in their parenting.
It was interesting too to see how the little girl was often concentrating intently on what was being said, even though she didn't join in.
Love how the sister follows him. It shows how kids look up too and copy people. Makes it even more scary when you realize what's being taught in schools or online.

This kid is 1000x more thoughtful (afa his ability to think reasonably) than your average adult. Wow.
For the non-British viewer, this accent indicates that this boy attends a private school in the south east of England. That's one reason for this child's eloquence.
Yes, I fear so. This reasoning ability should be the target outcome of all our impoverished schools, but I'm afraid it gets pushed out in many cases.
It could be a product of a private education, though his speech patterns and other behaviours would indicate that he's on the autistic spectrum, more specifically Aspergers Syndrome. We typically have an advanced vernacular, which is more apparent at younger ages where this differs from many of our peers, which when combined with his South-East England accent does smack of "Private School". I would hope that his reasoning skills and evident knowledge are at least in part attributable to his formal education, but I think both he and his family deserve some credit. I don't say this to be contentuous, but purely to highlight that these (rightfully) praised behaviours are as attributable to autism, regardless of socio-economic factors. People hear "autism" and immediately think we're mentally deficient. It would be nice, and reflective of reality, if people were as quick to think "Gee.. he's intelligent! Maybe he's autistic."
So it's the curriculum, the staff, the standards, the students themselves or the parental involvement that separates the the outcomes, not the location of the school.

Maybe. I would imagine he goes to a good school, though not all of those are private. And many private schools produce accents that are similar, wherever they are in the UK.
Feed a child's curiosity and look at the results. The boy knows how to think.

He very clearly addresses that during his talk, so I hope his mom doesn't spend all of her time, trying to turn him into a typical campus leftist. The world would be a much better place if we could be much more objective about things.

I am a teacher at an ALE (alternative learning environment) in Spokane, Washington. We are a project based school that promotes solution based thinking and a growth mindset. This is right up our alley. I will be using this for sure.
Seeing such mature well articulated views and words coming from a child of this age gives me hope for the future of humanity

Id think wed need people willing to push the boundaries of norms, in every regard. Not just wasting smart people on conforming to the same old mundane way of "how smart you are might depend on how big of a paycheck you might earn, but ultimately doing the same old work a useless job, doing the same old family routine and then dying, only for their child to repeat the process" shpeel.
And we live in a society that doesnt reward those who work against it, its systems, its mentality. It gets harder for people of substance, not easier. Being stupid is what makes life easy.

That boy uses the word "objectively". Smarter than the majority of adults (who it seems have replaced all objectivity with subjectivity)! I predict he will do well in life.

This boy's mom and I live in two different universes. How she can hear that, and her response is that he's to utilitarian was something I certainly didn't expect. He consistently talked about how morality was important, but you need something to back it up or else you can get behind things that are just crazy. If the sky is not red, you can't correctly say the sky is red. When the evidence changes, your gut feeling has to change lest you be actively wrong in your feelings. Her finding that concerning is quite concerning to me. It's awesome that she takes the time and worries about how her son is coming along, but she sounds like a typical university campus leftist.

If I asked you 10 years ago how somebody would vote if they were pro censorship and pro pharmaceutical industry and pro massive international billion dollar corporations that are all partially owned by the same groups that like to push a narrative on media, sometimes by literally paying them to do so, while a billionaire tech guy would become the largest farmland owner in America, and they would support him, for damn sure you would assume that they were right leaning. If you were very adamant, that rules should be created equally for everybody, and that you should not be allowed to discriminate based on any intrinsic characters, it would be assumed you were left, leaning, If you quoted Martin Luther King Jr. about the “content of their character“, you would probably have been left, leaning. Some things have stayed the same though. The left is not nearly as big into organized religion, and they are the first to call for medical system reform (in America), and are more sympathetic to socialist and communist movements. They are also far more likely to be involved in creativity and the arts.
Another interesting difference though, is that the left has completely abandoned the working man. It seems like each side flipped about half of their values.
So wholesome, healthy and smart. These two are like my children and most of the children I know but we never see them represented on social media which makes the whole world look a lot more grim than it clearly is!

Isnt utilitarianism one of the relativist moral theories? She spoke of them as different branches. I think she, like me (😁), picks up bits and pieces and spouts it out, sounding more intelligent than in reality.
Peter’s conversations are so illuminating. This format, generally, is extremely constructive intellectually. These children are such a joy. The little boy is very gifted and a wise soul. I wonder if his parents are proponents of a classical education.

The kid juxtaposed intuition with Socratic methods so wonderfully. I could tell that he has an intelligent mama, based on her quips about Kantian maxims. I have a 5 year old and she’s so, so smart. I’m really doing my best to culture her capacity for discourse.
Brits have the built-in advantage of a set of schools founded in the 1500s that have been fine-tuning how to properly educate. Using 500 continuous years of results of what and how to best produce a critical thinking individual with historical knowledge and perspective.
Many of them go on to Oxford University for its special major: Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE), which equips them to be capable of running a country sometime in the future.
(Note: Virginia Tech has a PPE major, and some of their students have either transferred to Oxford, or spend a semester/year there.)

He’s not a young man.he’s still a little boy. I don’t understand why people do this. It’s actually quite dangerous to mislabel because it allows society to get used to it and when something bad does happen to a 12 year old boy there’s no empathy or justice applied to him or whatever crime befalls him and we go on today he was a young man.

what an unbelivable video. i'm glad i clicked on this. I'll be honest, I was most blown away and how perceptive he was. The way he asked his sister about following him was mind boggling. Because He didnt say it in a playful way, he was completely perceptive of what she was doing. Incredible child.

PLAY this for your kids. This is an excellent example of the type of content I like to share with my homeschooled kiddos. I would list this video under CRITICAL THINKING 101 high school level in their portfolio and transcripts. This could also be categorized under DEBATE 101: Learn to see all sides of a subject and argue logically for either. Debate and Critical Thinking were classes in school until just several decades ago. I wonder why they removed them from the curriculum? Nice that mom gave him a moment to really shine. I wonder where this will take him? Really cool video.
Based on his mom's comments, it will get him to a bit of new education from his mom to get beyond the excessive utilitarian tendencies.

Then maybe you are in the perfect position to expand on her comment at the end about his utilitarian tendencies. Most people in the comments are talking about how wonderful that is, and I find it quite concerning. He clearly is not a psychopathic robot, so I don't understand why what he said requires some "deprogramming". I've been trying for years now to understand why people have such a visceral opposition to objectivity. I encounter this constantly and it's so frustrating. People actually get upset when you want evidence before you make opinions, and that the evidence takes priority over your feely-feels about a subject. The mom comes across as a slightly more grounded version of a typical campus leftist.

Also, although Peter begins to focus exclusively on the boy, the young girl stays with the conversation and is listening intently as far as I can make out. This was exactly the environment I was raised in in a neighboring country - it was thrilling to hang out with the adults and hang on their words through their intellectual conversation.
What's interesting is that as you grow up, things you heard of those conversation start to makes sense much later. Sometimes not for 10, 20, 40 years, and you still remember the things that were said that didn't make sense to you at the time.
