    A lot of that would drive me mad, and some of it is the sort of stuff that you might not pick up on during a test drive too, which is why your video is so good. I wonder how some of it gets through the development stage, especially when it doesn't need to have much of a cost implication

    • @car_babble

      Thanks a lot Nick! Yes, you do wonder what these developers were smoking when they moved ahead with certain things. Usually, though, its just pure cost cutting and they hope you won't notice.

    Thank you for this video. Very detailed and informative. I recently bought a 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid here in the U.S. and found a few things related to what you described here. I have Android Auto, and when my infotainment system connects to it, I have a hell of a time getting my Google Maps (which has all my favorite points listed in it already) and Sirius XM Radio to both appear on the screen. Even worse, I can not get them to show up as a default as soon as I get in the car and hit the "Driver 1" button on the welcome screen. Furthermore, when I drop my phone into the recharging slot (even out of it's case) the vehicle will only charge it 1 or 2% over a long drive, if I am using Android Auto for navigation, podcasts, etc. I have to plug the phone into a USB slot with a cable to charge and do these Bluetooth features. Since it is not a wireless connection, I bought a separate Motorola MA1 Wireless Android Auto Car Adapter (dongle) and connected that to the primary USB connection in the center console). That at least helps my infotainment system recognize my phone for Android Auto, wirelessly. Overall, this entertainment system has been a nightmare. I've spend a bunch of hours in the vehicle, parked in my driveway with the engine on, going through the manual and trying to figure it out.

    I got a Santa Fe PHEV Ulitimate just before Xmas and I’m blown away with it tbh. I get what you mean about the items you’ve raised but they just don’t bother me and moreover I love going through the space shuttle pre-launch sequence, especially when I talk to an imaginary Mission Control but I suppose that means I’m easily pleased 😊

    Liked the video. I understand the frustration with the heat only working when the engine is on, but if it were to work on the battery alone, wouldn't that deplete the battery faster? Heat takes a lot of energy to produce, so wouldn't it be more economical to run the engine in short blasts, producing heat, than to deplete the battery and then have the engine run all the time once it's gone?

    • @car_babble
      @car_babble  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That is definitely a valid point but the solution is really a heat pump/ auxiliary heater. The issue is that you can't have both EV and heating consistently at the same time.

    Great video showcasing real-world experience - thinking the diesel option is probably best for Australian and New Zealand conditions and given the cost differential of the vehicle and lower price of diesel. The heater issue is one I would not have thought of and something to think about with plug-in hybrid vehicles.

      @@car_babble - yup re heater the annoying part came over in the video Hyundai totally not thought out that usecase - not sure I could be bothered with all the hassle of having to think ahead re charging, ev / hybrid mode to max economy and especially given longer road trip etc..

    I have had my Santa Fe PHEV since Jan 2022. Am at just over 25k miles now and my biggest grip has to be the clutch. The lag from coast to accelerate (I.e. when approaching a round about, or pulling out onto a busy road) is awful. I recently timed it at just under 5 seconds from pedal down to accelerate, by which point the car launches itself and tries to throw itself into the nearest bush! I used to love this car, but the lag feels so dangerous. I wonder if this is common or do I have a potential fault?

    • @car_babble
      @car_babble  10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's one of my biggest gripes so I doubt it's a fault. It really undermines the car.

    Finally got ours after a year and 9 days (and one wrong delivery)! Happy with it so far…noticed a few of these things but they’ve not been bothersome (so far, anyway!)…a couple of things, though…the auto-hold function doesn’t remember the setting, despite the manual saying it does! And, we didn’t get a 3 pin cable charger…not that I need one, but it seems hit and miss…the dealer says that the PHEV doesn’t come with a 3 pin plug, only the Type 2 charger.

    • @car_babble
      @car_babble  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi Paul, didn't realise that about the auto-hold! 😂 Glad you like it though. The heating thing is the only really totally annoying thing but I think more on principle now than anything.

      Got mine in May. Happened to find a dealer who had one coming in that day (they had ordered a year before as a demonstrator) - I bought it 2 days later.
      Mine does come with a 'granny cable'.

    A couple of of updates and clarifications on this video...
    With regards point 6, we have in fact since our recent family holiday found that you can have carplay on screen and operate the radio at the same time... we just don't know how we accidentally did it and it seemed to work totally randomly, so this point is accurate as far as we can't do them both at the same time on demand and really still puzzled as to how you force the car to do it.
    With regards point 10, I want to do more testing on AC specifically vs being in EV mode. Where we live we barely use AC, but I definitely found when I tested it (with PHEV battery full) that it kicked in the ICE when I wanted too much AC, but on a drive in HEV mode (dead battery), I noticed the AC working at the same time, so I am fully confused about this one and will report back! The heating, however, is as described and the main gripe I have!

    #10 is valid, but you can alleviate it to some extent by using the seat heating/cooling. If you are going to let those other things annoy you, pay the extra tens of thousands of $ for a BMW, Mercedes or some such. I saw someone replied prior addressing your video point by point. No need to repeat that. I'm going with the hybrid version because I just can't justify the extra $6-8K for the PHEV model. Most of the others will apply to the HEV version and don't strike me as significant.

      @car_babble  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the comment.Yes, plenty of people have commented on this video and I've responded to most of them. The whole point of this video is to highlight the things I personally find annoying to varying degrees - after having owned for a time, so to me, they are all valid but may not be considered issues for other people. Also, I wouldn't know that many of these things were annoying until owning the car and I am pretty sure many of my gripes would be replaced with others regardless of how much more premium another car was and i would gladly share those to as its informative to other buyers. The only one on my list that could be a deal breaker for some I suspect is number 10. Yes, a heated seat will help regulate temp, but if for example you are really cold, no matter how roasted your bottom is, if cold air is blowing in your face it is very annoying.

    Found the answer to #5. Push the "media" button on the central console (to access maps on your phone, for example). It will also switch the audio to music on your phone. But then then hit the "mode" button on the steering wheel (on the left side, upper right button on my 2022 Sante Fe plug in hybrid). This will let you cycle through audio sources without affecting the map display.

    Dealers do not have plug-in Hyundai's in Minnesota or I probably would've bought one by now. Wow, did you say heat or AC does not work in AC mode? That would be a dealbreaker for me.

    • @car_babble
      @car_babble  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Bobby, yes, the heating does not work in EV mode, but I am unsure about the AC. I need to more testing on this as it seems when the plug-in hybrid battery is charged up, if I put on AC, it cuts out EV mode, but when in HEV mode, I think I am still getting AC when it's driving in EV mode. The problem is, if you have the temperature low, it's hard to tell if it's just blowing cold air or the AC is on so I intend to play about with it a bit more as there appears to be some nuance here. For where I live, the heating is the real issue and that is definitely correct.

    The thing I hate most is the automatic wrenching of the steering wheel by the lane-keeping assist! Our roads have so many marks on them, and poor lines, that it does it so often..
    The dealer told me I should just turn it off...
    Yes, you have to hold the button, and do it every time... That's due to the NCAP rating, it has to default to 'on'.
    (Similar to the reverse beep - that's legislation, so you have to annoy the neighbours!!)

    Re 1: It is a disclaimer for those idiots who try to sue because they were messing with the infotainment system when they wrecked.
    Re 2: Agreed. Annoying.
    Re 3 in the US, I don't have a button. It senses the key, the mirrors fold out and holding the door handle for longer than a second unlocks the car. Still not great though as it seems buggy.
    Re 4/5: that is an android thing. The box button on the bottom right of the map allows split screen between apps. One side map, the other media. I happen to like it, but it would be nice to use the radio. Pressing this button can make the map go full screen.
    Re 6: you have 2 charging cables?! I only got one. It can fit in the second set of storage trays further forward under the floor. There's a LOT of storage in this car!
    Re 7: petrol door button keeps people from messing with your petrol. It's a thing!
    Re 8: the button for the parking brake is just in the wrong place. The buttons for PDNR bother you though? Really? Would you rather pretend you are putting it in gear with manly pistol grip to later slam your elbow on? I don't mind the buttons.
    Re 9: agree. They should have those camera cleaners like F1 cars have. 1 button and the dirt just moves out of view.
    Re 10: First, cooling is done without the petrol engine on in this car and you can get cold air in EV mode. Currently, almost all PHEVs get heat from the petrol engine. It's not as bad as it sounds. You are getting heat, range, and topping off the battery all at the same time. If you don't want to use the petrol engine on occasion, why get a PHEV? Just get an EV. Or a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, they do have an electric heat pump.

      Sorry for the delay in reply but super grateful for you taking the time to write such a detailed response. Just to respond on a couple:
      Re 6 - I only have 2 cables to cover my android and my wife's iphone connections being different. They were not supplied with the car. Storage is good for the most part, I agree.
      Re 7 - I figured that was the reason, it's just annoying when you press it by mistake lol!
      Re 8 - Yes, I find a stick just more feelsome but that's personal preference.
      Re 10 - I think the issue is there is no heat pump. If it had that - no problem. This was a mistake in not knowing this before buying for sure.
      Thanks again...

      The push button drive mode was very strange the first time I encountered it. It was in a 2016 Mack Truck with a 12-speed automatic and the buttons were in a module near the radio, a bit of a reach honestly. I much prefer manual transmissions but I became comfortable with the idea that if the intent is to do it for the driver, there really is no need for anything more than a button. Paddle shifters are still very strange to me, though.
      I thought you had gotten 2 sets of level 1 or 2 charging cables to charge the car. Mine came with a level 1 charger that plugs into a normal house outlet. But then again, UK outlets are completely different than US outlets including the voltage.
      TBH, I agree that PHEVs should also use heat pumps to stay i EV mode. That being said, heating air takes a lot of energy from a battery. It makes sense that they would pull waste heat off the engine to use in the cabin instead of tapping into the battery potential range.
      When I bought this car, it was not originally a consideration. I was test-driving petrol only vehicles. But the sales person told me about their incentives for THIS PHEV which brought the price down into a much more affordable range. So far, I'm loving it but I've only had it about 3 weeks.

    Does turning on the heated seats and steering wheel mean ICE kicks instantly? If not, how does it affect the range in EV mode?

    • @car_babble
      @car_babble  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've just gone out to my car and checked that and the heated seats and steering wheel being switched on does not definitively bring in the ICE. I can do more tests but I do wonder why that is given everything I have said about HVAC. Either way, I can't see that having these on affects EV range much.

    Hi babble.
    The reason I did not buy the KIA Sorrento of Santa Fe PHEV was because of that heating not working in battery mode (pointless).
    I bought a KIA EV6 which I cannot wait to get rid of it. Back to fossil fuel for me.
    My EV6 has the same points you talk about you are not alone there. So so annoying. Some person said in a review that their KIA was
    better quality than an Audi. What they did not say was that their previous car was a Dacia Stepway.

      About half of my points are opinion based, which means you have no basis to say they are not justified and the other half are clearly backed up by evidence. I have also driven many other car brands for a basis for comparison, however, when you own a car, you are must more likely to find seemingly petty things that annoy you. That is the whole point of the series I have on my channel about owning this car is to give you that in-depth view point through time of ownership. I am always happy to hear alternative views or be corrected on what I think I know about my car or other car, however, if you disagree with what I say please do explain where exactly this is.
