Brann, the drummer, had a big impact on the Crack the Skye album since the whole idea really revolved around the suicide of his 11 year old sister. I considered this their more emotionally attuned album. Some song meanings vary but it's all about Brann's sister essentially. Very sad, very powerful. Get chills every time listening to this album

This is the first song that introduced me to Mastodon. I got hooked right away and I'll admit, this is arguably one of the best of today's metal scene. Mastodon and Gojira have helped me throughout my college years and I'll never forget when I went to see Mastodon in concert here in Hawaii, all I wanted to hear was Oblivion and Blood and thunder. Best night ever!

My older brother Thor introduced me to Gojira, Mastodon, And Between the Buried and me all in the same night. Forever changed my music taste.
It was Blood and Thunder for me, from NFS Underground (2?), but this one is by far my fav.
Get to see Gojira and mastodon this September. Fiddler’s greens. It seems forever away.

This entire album helped me cope with my great grandmas passing. She was the rock of the entire family for all of those generations and it kind of fell apart after she departed. I was already listening to this album at the time when I first discovered it but she passed shortly after. The concepts on this entire album are amazing. Stuck with me ever since and very formative to my younger existence.

Honestly, as far as choruses go this is possibly one of the most beautiful ones ever written. Right up there with rose by a perfect circle and jars by chevelle. Even better maybe.

He came into the restaurant I was working at while he was doing his residency on the Seth Meyers Show. Easily the most down to earth and accessible rock star I’ve met.

Ohmygod you're going to be in Grand Rapids?! I moved here in 2003 and was living here (still live here) when I met my husband, a beautiful, golden human being and metalhead who bore resemblance to Brann. (Aric always, also, wished to play drums. Instead he played a bit of bass.) He introduced me to so much amazing music including Mastedon. This was one of his favorite songs. Ours is a soul-based love that has endured the six years since his death, and will sustain me my life long. When I want to be closer to Aric, I can hug his pillow, wear his hoodie, or boot up one of his beloved metal tracks. Like this one. Thank you.

That solo is just a blues solo with distortion; it adds so much to this song, as well.
Honestly, I could never get into these guys, it took me 16 years to realize what theyre doing. Most songs since the beginning of time are about love, politics, orother happenings; now mastodon comes along and uses music to tell stories, about random myths and legends (and sometime real stories). It's refreshing.

So this is easily on my top 5 songs ever list.
And what even happens rhythmically at like 3:40-4:05?! I've heard the song so many times and can't really figure it out (though I haven't rewound it over and over and really tried to get it).
Sly Shippy The solo is in 6/8. The transition you're talking about is where they play in half-time and Brann stutters the beat. After, the song goes full-time again to end the solo

I remember the TV being on in the background one time while I was working at home and then this came on. And then I realized I wasn't working anymore. Just staring at the TV because this song was so, so good. And that's what started my journey into discovering and loving Mastodon.

You guys should check out Orange Goblin if you like this song...check out their latest album 'Eulogy for the Damned'..they started as a straight up stoner rock band, but now its fully fledged metal with insane heavy rifs...so maybe your right..I donnow...
+Jaden Grattan I wouldn't classify Mastodon as stoner rock (Kyuss for the win!), but this song definitely leans toward that side of metal. It just lacks the sludgy, doomy sounds of pure stoner rock.

In this music, yes, only Brent, Brann and Sanders sing. But you can hear Bill singing in musics like Blood and Thunder, Crack the Skye, or older albums, when they had a more crude approach. Bill`s vocals tend to be more growled, and are usually used as support for the other mates, especially Sanders.

To me, before I even knew what this album was about and before I saw the music video, it always made me feel like I was in space and it had a very original vibe and groove. It's hard to describe but it shows you how masterful Mastodon is at creating an environment and theme and placing you right in the center of it.

I can't stop listening...
I always love how the instruments combine to let me hear and feel that journey into numb anxiety, anger and finally a shutdown of emotions for a brief exhausted silence. I can feel all the nuance of this section of depression through the instruments and at the same time the lyrics articulate it beautifully.
After all that time spent struggling to explain that whirlpool of emotions, hoping some day someone listens to the struggle, Mastodon bring in the entire band on the same message and that's cathartic to me.

LOL. That would be Brent Hinds who sings that line... Neither sounds like Ozzy to me. Troy's voice is far too deep. Brann also sings in the song. The non chorus parts. Troy sings the OTHER chorus.. "How can I tell you that I failed.."

i remember first hearing this song when it dropped on adultswim. something about it just clicked with me and i fell in love with it. i don’t listen to it as much anymore, but i always find a couple times per year to go crazy to it. 😂

Such intensity, the melody, the way the instruments complement remind me Rush, Pink Floyd, Dream Theater, Gojira. It's surreal and have my thoughts and preferences in the last days. Even when I do not hear, I'M THINKING ON IT! It's FUCK !! I LOVE HER!!!
