One interesting thing I learned is that the torque spec is based on the type of gasket used. 32.5 foot pounds for an aluminum gasket and 51.6 foot pounds for copper and metal gaskets. They're color coded too. Silver: aluminum, Brown: copper, and Black: metal. This is what I got from Mitchel pro demand if you were wondering.
You're welcome. I figure if people love their Subaru's, they need the info to look after them and keep them running well. I had a blast with mine this past winter in Minnesota and the weather is always unpredictable. 2 feet of snow gone in one week and then it's all back the next. I make sure to stay up on all my maintenance so my wrx can keep powering through these winters.
Super helpful video! Saved me so much time. Learning from a video is wayyyy better than trying to follow how to do it on the written Suby forums. Great job! 👍
Beth Klaser , I just bought a 2010 WRX and my 2nd gear synchro is sticking, which is starting to cause some grinding. It has a little over 200k. i’m hoping the replacement gear lube will fix the issue.
Please please please cover turbo if you’re going to remove the inter cooler to fill, especially if you make your funnel burp. That fluid came scary close
Jesus Montero The front differential takes the same fluid as the transmission. I know weird right? Whenever you change the transmission fluid you are also changing the front differential fluid. I'll do a rear differential change sometime. I'm currently in Korea for the year.
One more reason to buy a subaru, they actually have a dip stick for transmission fluid. My Toyota has a sealed automatic transmission and it's not worth the effort of DIY, I have to take it to dealer.
So the front diff and transmission share the same oil right, but do they have to be drained separately and filled separately or can it all be filled through the transmission dip stick fill
How the heck did you get that bolt off. Even with PB penetrating fluid, a breaker bar, and a pipe extension, I could not get that SOB off. Afraid its starting to strip.
In the beginning you said 32 inch lbs but near the end you said 32 ft lbs. Can you confirm which is the correct one? That can definitely mess people up.
James Lee It's really a matter of preference. A rule I always go by is whatever you do put in there, make sure it's synthetic and use the same brand for consistency. Royal Purple is definitely a reputable brand.
Sonny Blood it should be the same maintenance steps. im not sure if its the same amount of fluid though since the STI is a 6 speed. You can reference your manual as I did to see your exact fluid amount. You can also call your local Subaru dealership and ask for help.

Jared V Thanks for the info buddy!👍

Thank you needed this comment 😭 was confused on which mine has as I’m changing the fluids rn haha
Dealership sold me wrong size gasket 🤣
Super helpful video! Saved me so much time. Learning from a video is wayyyy better than trying to follow how to do it on the written Suby forums. Great job! 👍
The correct part number for the gasket is 803926090. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the easy to follow instructions and the tip about not adding too much at a time so the air has time to escape. Cheers Mate, from Australia.
Christopher Maurer np bro glad to help, especially in different countries!
I dont know why everyone hates the dealership so much.
They built my engine and it ran great for almost 30k miles!
Bryan Ståhl haha yikes!! Sorry to hear that
6:17 now that's how you earn a thumbs up!
This was the most helpful video I could find. Thanks dude!
Hell yeah brother, glad I could help!
Extremely helpful. I just bought a 2010 WRX. I'm eager to get started. :)
welcome to the Subie family! haha you'll love it. I'm a stickler for proper maintenance. I hate it when I have to take my cars to the shop.

@@BlazinPowerz Were you able to fix the issue?
Chue Yang - It actually helped,
but I found out the synchros for the 2nd gear need replaced.
@@BlazinPowerz Was it an expensive fix? And how are you able to tell if the synchros are going bad or sticking?
does this work on a 2008 wrx, cus you said in the video 2010-2014 but the title says 2008-2014
I’ve read there are two places you have to drain from. Maybe that gasket you got fits the second drain plug?
Plz make video for rear diff fluid change
Please please please cover turbo if you’re going to remove the inter cooler to fill, especially if you make your funnel burp. That fluid came scary close
mlyniecm if that burp went inside the turbo outlet that would have been game over ☠️
Good video bro. I'd appreciate a Diff Fluid vid

matt coleman will the same Fluids work on am STI?
It should be the same, just a different amount of fluid. In the beginning of the video you can see the specs for an STi in the manual.
One more reason to buy a subaru, they actually have a dip stick for transmission fluid. My Toyota has a sealed automatic transmission and it's not worth the effort of DIY, I have to take it to dealer.
Hey Matt s ok I was just watching rear diff and front diff so pretty much it's all the same oil?
Thanks for this post!
wow that actually easy to do. and whats the size and name of the bolt used to remove the drain plug?
Jokersd360 T-70 Torx Bit my man
Great video man.
jsego01106 thanks dude! just hoping it helps someone haha
Definitely helps. Is Very concise and to the point.
👍
Solid tutorial
So the front diff and transmission share the same oil right, but do they have to be drained separately and filled separately or can it all be filled through the transmission dip stick fill
So the transmission dip stick is where you fill it with new transmission oil?
Phuong Le Yes
where would be the jack up point in the front of the car?
Did you use anything in particular to clean the bolt and gasket of oil and grime? any soap, cleaner, rinse?
Jared Guerra not really, just shop towels and isopropyl alcohol.
Does the 2008 impreza (non-wrx) have the same transmission? Same procedures?
Right Part # is 803926090 for the drain plug gasket 👍
Is it the same for a non turbo
Thanks dude!
How the heck did you get that bolt off. Even with PB penetrating fluid, a breaker bar, and a pipe extension, I could not get that SOB off. Afraid its starting to strip.
Evan Black haha well I’m in Colorado so there isn’t really a problem with bolts rusting or anything. It was fairly easy to take off for me.
In the beginning you said 32 inch lbs but near the end you said 32 ft lbs. Can you confirm which is the correct one? That can definitely mess people up.
Pickle pickle 17 32.5 ft lbs. check the pinned comment if you use a different gasket.
Thanks i just put oil on my evo 9
Thanks bro!
What bit size are you using?
So just a question is it better to use Subaru engine oil or Royal Purple
James Lee It's really a matter of preference. A rule I always go by is whatever you do put in there, make sure it's synthetic and use the same brand for consistency. Royal Purple is definitely a reputable brand.
matt coleman true so I'm watching your vid again did you remove the cover to drain out trans oil?
Yeah but I only had it off because I was changing the oil beforehand. You don't have to take it off just to change tranny oil.
I had to really crank on my plug. Was leaking otherwise.
Phrosda1 Z hey, sorry about that and such a late reply. The updated torque info is in the description.
So I just got a used 2013 wrx with 59kmiles and I got without knowing the damage of maintenance work. Shoot cost
$$ how much is the transmission oil?
James Lee don't remember exactly how much but it was pretty cheap. Highly recommend buying OEM Subaru fluid
matt coleman
I was watching other vids after yours , the way you explain is so much clear 😁
Thanks for the easy to learn video
I felt the same way. I couldn't find a real, straight to the point tutorial. Got frustrated and made my own 😂
would this work on 2012 sti.
Sonny Blood it should be the same maintenance steps. im not sure if its the same amount of fluid though since the STI is a 6 speed.
You can reference your manual as I did to see your exact fluid amount.
You can also call your local Subaru dealership and ask for help.
matt coleman. thank for the reply. 4.3qt for me.
Sonny Blood Good luck buddy!! 👌
Isn't their a fill port on the transmission?
Billy Moore yes, that’s where I filled it in the video
@@abominabot gotcha do you know what size is the socket for the drain bolt
T70 torx bit
Would this work on a 2008 sti
Yes, just s different amount of fluid
Manual or automatic transmission?
Manual
The blackness lmao
Thank you dude
No problem my guy
