    Brand new rebuilt trans from Subaru and 4th has grinded off and on since day one. Today it drove me crazy enough to look it up and as usual with these cars, EVERYONE HAS THE SAME PROBLEM and it was widespread enough that Google autocompleted my text while searching. Going to give this a shot. Next will be the squeaky clutch pedal fix (brace that goes under the dash above the pedal fix made my old wrx feel better than it ever did) thanks for the info sir!

    Here's the deal, the synchros in our transmissions need friction modifiers to operate correctly, like a lot of other trans do. Amsoil is great gear oil, but it does not contain any friction modifiers, so it's just slick as owl shit and won't allow the synchros to engage correctly. That's where the red line fluid comes into play, it does have the friction modifiers, so you could probably just add a bottle of it to any brand gear oil and it would work. I've used uncle scottys cocktail for almost a decade now without any problems, but I might just try the andrewtech blend next time. Then again, amsoil is a really good product! Maybe I'll try my own concoction?

    I am having a 4th gear grind as well in my 16' STI whenever I downshift from 5th to 4th and when shifting from 3rd to 4th above 4k rpms. The dealership recommended replacing the clutch and slave cylinder because of some wear. I may try this cocktail before dropping 2k on a new clutch

    All right I just got to be clear on this for educating everyone. The severe gear oil version of the 75w90 amsoil is meant for your differential not your transmission. If you're adding amsoil make sure you get the non-severe gear oil 75w90 version for your transmission. Problem solved, if you call amsoil they will tell you this exact thing vs watching TH-cam.

It even shifts into gear soooo much smoother. Side note on the STI's with internal pumps, they say the pumps are not needed and the design is the same on the new transmissions. Hey man, thanks for making a vid on this! I’ve been curious for a long time and didn’t realize the answer was right here. I did the Andrew tech cocktail a few months back and it worked STELLAR. Night and day difference. After a few months though, now the grind is back…think it could be the two fluids separating themselves in the tranny? Or think it’s just time to do another swap?

    • @BoltsNBoost
      @BoltsNBoost  ปีที่แล้ว

      The issue is... its more of a band aid OR somewhat of a fix if the synchros are on the verge... but in the end I'd still think that the synchros need fixed.
      It shouldn't be back in a couple of months... unless you put like 5 to 10k km on it.
