- "If losing the line is so dangerous, why don't you tether yourself to it?"
Because it's terrible.
We already showed how bad it was to tether yourself to the line and several people commented that Gus was just doing it wrong. So Woody decided to take a stab at it and see if he would be better at tethering to the line.

As a genius non-diving commenter myself, after seeing this great success my next idea for you is why don't you find a big fish with a compatible blood type to yours, run an IV from it to you and that way you don't have to take any air at all. It will just pump oxygenated air right into your bloodstream! And bonus... you can just ride the fish like a DPV.
GENIUS, you should be our Chief Innovation and Science stuffs Officer
Hahahaha best comment yet !
I must say, this idea seems ................ fishy.
might be hard to implement on a large scale
@@Ilych367 gold !!
The fact that Woody has Pink gear makes me unreasonably happy. That plus the singing. 😂
Woody is sigma with a huge sack rate
It's great for two reasons. 1 - it's highly visible. 2 - nobody else wants to steal it!
As someone with zero personal diving experience my first thought wasn't that it'd be inefficient, but that I'd be terrified of somehow breaking or untying the line by constantly pulling on it
Same here …
Facts. i dont dive either but that just seems like common sense. Unfortunate that common sense is not more common
@@evanmcgeorge9942 did someone call?
Lmao. Woody bringing the fun vibes on every occasion. Cave diving seems less stressful with pink gear and underwater singing 😅
This episode is pure gold lol. Love your videos where you make important points about safety, but do it in a fun and funny way.
I laughed so hard man. This made my day. I am not even a diver, but Woody's singing and whimpering was just too much :D
Not a cave diver but seems like putting more stress on a line and potentially breaking tie offs would be even more dangerous.
There's nothing good about tethering to the line
I like how you can tell the difference between Woody's tethering music and his talking to fish singing!
I love it! Especially Woody's sounds effects. Very entertaining!
I had a couple of coughing fits watching this one, *crawls to cupboard for inhaler
You cough underwater often?
Well you did it to me again. Every time I start watching your channel I get the bug to start cave diving. So I’m going to the Yucatán in December ten days for cavern and intro. I’m DM and Tec40 (as well as most PADI and SSI certs) now in California waters and I know it will still be a major push for certification. The thought of diving caves doesn’t particularly excite me (I’m sure that will change once I experience it), it’s the idea of all the new procedures and learning there is.
Woody, you HAVE to record an album of tethering songs and release it to your members!!!
I have never been diving. Nor do I think I will ever do it. However, this channel is so fascinating and you guys tell the stories so well. Met a guy at work who dives and I could actually talk a little about it. So interesting
I'm not even a diver but I watch these guys religiously, and have for a long time, I want to learn and it's my dream to go with Woody and Gus, I'm sure it will never happen but a man can dream! LOL BTW Gus looks amazing man, wow
I share this sentiment. I was scared of scuba diving until i started watching this channel, now i wish i could go do it😂
What's stopping you from learning to dive? It's quite easy to get into.
Money@@Yggdrasil42
The problem is guys - without the peak performance tethering speciality it's very hard to get right. I believe Edd currently runs a course called "Tethering, The why behind the how"
Probably 😅
Could you imagine an "Edd Sorensen reacts" video of him watching the tethering videos? 😂
I would love a halloween episode. I know there is million storys from divers about unexplained event when diving. Thoes storys are so addictive... Would be so dope to hear them from real divers not just story tellers
I was just about to say something about “tethering” potentially making it possible for blind people to solo cave dive, when Woody added that bit. Love you guys 🫶🏽
solo cave diving while blind sounds terrifying, but i guess you'd be used to 0 visibility regardless
This is just fantastic - comedy gold :) - plus we all get to learn watching a real life scenario. It is very clear that this takes away so much from the enjoyment of the dive, causes frequent bumping into rocks, stirring up silt and on and on and on. OMG I love the whale song underwater commentary.
Holy shit, Gus!
You've slimmed down so much! I had to look at the date! "What, was this uploaded 20 years ago?"
Dive Talk calendar in 5.....4......3......2... lol
You may mock but the dive was so safe you live to tell the tale!
This video was hysterical! I love Woodies noises and singing 😂. You guys have great attitudes even though the cave police will always have something to say. You clearly know what you're doing and this is a great demonstration of why tethering like this is not a good idea and just causes problems.
I laughed so much on the initial video, but nearly broke a rib laughing so hard on this one 😆 You guys are something else! 😁
How long until you panic, tangle up in that tethered line, and still have no idea which way is out? 😂😮
Gus & Woody, thank you for the fun and light-hearted video. I mostly enjoyed listening to Gus laughing at Woody's singing and chattering. Love you guys!
“Tether songs.” Woody, you’re so adorable and delightful. It sounded like a little bumblebee. You make the audience fall in love with caves.
Woody making up his own theme music reminds me of 'Those Magnificent Men and their flying machines' the German commander pretending to be a brass band
I discovered you a few days ago and cant stop watching your videos :) I have absolutely no idea about diving, but I love listening to your relaxed style, learn something and enjoy. Viele Grüße aus Berlin! :D
Woody’s singing is a gift to this world.
(Speaking of, this time last year I designed and made you both some custom shirts - did you ever receive it? If you don’t like em I’m not offended, I just want to make sure my printer actually fulfilled it!)
I think so but mine didn't fit :(
You guys are hysterical! 😂😂 I laughed my buttock off the whole time. Woody's running commentary kept me in stitches.
Well done, gentlemen.😊
First time I’ve been here during a premier.
You need two tethers (as you mentioned), just as with climbing that way you are always secure 😎 ofcourse you will need third one as a backup😜
That would definitely be a tethered cluster muck! 😂
This was outside tethering standards! The most elite tetherers use padlocks, obviously to improve safety. There's a actually an ongoing heated debate in the tethering community about using locks with keys vs/ combinations. The advantage of the key is you don't forget any combinations, but the disadvantage is you need to take bolt cutters along too, in case you drop your keys. Of course, the combination locks avoid this but their issue is remembering the numbers. But I've seen many a 4-number tattoo on a divers hand, so this is generally the preferred option. That's how you tell a elite tetherer: 4-number tattoo on their right hand. Safety first, people (even if it kills you)!
Thanks for creating this educational vid. When I first subscribed to your channel last year, I asked why you don’t tether to cave line. Now I understand 😂
The solution is obvious - you need 3 lines: one for "in", one for "out", and one for cookies and arrows :)))
Ahhh
2 gold lines are the solution, one for the way in and one for the way out😂 and maybe one fast lane line next to it for each direction, in case you need to overtake 🙃
Love this vid, guys. You are awesome!
You need a third tether attached to your third leg as a backup for the secondary tether incase Donald Cerrone comes through and slashes your tether because it's every man for himself down there yo.
Freedivers tether themselves but they have a straight, unobstructed line. I can’t see how this type of a thing in a cave wouldn’t make you more susceptible to a mistake ( tangled, lost line, broken line and potentially drowning in an emergency).
Wet Myth busters, formerly known as dive talk 😆
Gus you look great! Haven't popped by for a while but didnt even recognize you in the thumbnail, whatever you are doing, good job. Take care and stay safe you two.
Hi guys got my open ocean diver certificate few months ago, and nw working towards my sports diver. Love watching you guys
I hadn't seen a video in a while, looks like Gus is slimming down.
On a mountain, big difference is that you can fall to your death - so tethering is the right thing to do in via Ferrata.
Each sport has its correct practice.
The sounds Woody is making during the tether experiment are making me laugh so hard 😂
Great video once again!!!
this was both fun and insightful!
Y’all need 2 tethers like how people who work in high structures do for a fair test imo. Get stuck, clip #2, unclip #1. Get stuck, clip #1, unclip #2. Etc.
Also tbh cookies/arrows would need a redesign or would need a bigger carabiner to clip in so it could go around the arrows.
Woah is that Gus? Amazing man! You look like a new guy. I opened the video just because of the thumb nail. I was like who is that guy with Woody?!?! Where is Gus?
Inspiring!
Gus mate, you've done well with your weight loss. I hope you are losing it through healthy means! Much love and respect to you both!
I was just thinking today, "I really miss Dive Talk!"
YAY!!
Great Video guys... l was laughing at most. Love the Woody chatter parts... by the way ... Are you guys offering the Mount Everest course any time soon ... lol
I was exhausted just by looking at you struggle with it, i can't imagine doing it all along a real cave dive, a thousand feet from the entrance ! The perfect way to ruin a dive !
The noises he makes during that dive are amazing.
Geez, I haven't tuned in for a year or so, and man Gus has lost a tonne of weight! Looking great man! Well done.
I don’t know a thing about diving cave diving y’all’s videos brings me joy!! Would love to meet yall!
You can hang out with us for a whole week!

Some how, I wasn’t expecting to see woody in a jacket bcd hahaha
Imagine seeing him in a cavern and not noticing the chest mount hahaha
Hi guys! What lightd were you guys using? What’s the minimum power (in lumens) that you think is suitable for cave diving?
Going to get my Intro to Cave training next month! Shoutout from Brazil! 🇧🇷
OrcaTorch D630! It can do 4,000 lumens for 5 hours but I run it in "Middle" at 1,500 lumen which last 7.5 hours. :)
Order from the OrcaTorch store with code "DiveTalk" and get a 10% discount!
Looking good as always, especially Gus! 🎉 love you guys
I wanna dive with you guys haha woodys song was hilarious
So funny to watch 😂😂 Made my Friday 13th 😊
Great to see you finally do it correctly. Stay safe boys
"Don't try this at home" ... I don't think I will. I don't have a flooded cave system in my backyard 😁
Ooh a new gus and woody video, what a treat 😊
It's nice how you just go on air to prove something is stupid when you're being challenged on that. This looks like a horrible experience for no reason at all :D
Some people don't see things our way until they see it on video and understand what we meant
I need to see a video of you guys coming out of Ginnie behind a DPV while tethered!
Hey guys just wanted to say thank you for your videos. I'm sure you get this a ton but you sparked my interest in diving and I just got my referral diver cert for open water this last weekend! Really excited for my open water dives next week and I don't think I would have gotten here if it wasn't for you. Appreciate all you do.
Proud of you!
Woody your hilarious dude...if i ever dove with you guys id be laughing the whole time!!! Love the channel guys, Gus and Woody you both deserve all the success!.... thumbs up from me every video.
I totally see how being clipped on is a nightmare. But I also see many documentaries where the reason someone dies in a cave is they momentarily lose contact with the line. What I take from this video is that cave diving is not for me 🤣
Losing the line is not a death sentence. It’s actually something we train for, it’s called “Loss Line Procedure”, and you have to find the line during training in order to complete the exercise. And it s actually worse than real life because in real life you have line awareness and kind of know where the line is in relation to your position in the cave. During training they blindfold you, then they spin you around and drop you somewhere else in the cave, so you have no idea if the line is behind you, above you, to your right, no idea! And you have to find it. Blind.
@@DIVETALK yet dozens of trained, super experienced cave divers lose the line and get stuck in a side chamber...
I bet Woody has never suffered from dry eyes a day in his life!
Looking great Gus! Keep up the grind!
😂 loving Woodys singing
I need a mixtape of woody's diving songs! 😂😂😂
Y’all need to do a dive with that Rory guy. Keep bringing him back!!
Was Woody tethered when he set the focus for studio camera? haha. Great stuff guys, love this channel and the way you show your thoughts and don't just talk about how you feel about such 'options'.
Woody's singing reminded me of Beaker on the old Muppet Show.😅
By the way, do you recommend those spring straps on the fins? Im looking to buy some.
100%
Do people imagine that the lines are rigidly attached to 2000 pound anchors in solid granite wall??? I watched Edd Sorenson's rescue interview where he talks about tying off his line on some piece of rock the size of his thumb and then explaining to the lost diver he found, "He look man, this line is tied off on something as small as my thumb. If we pull this line off, we're done. So be careful."
That new rebreather looks cool.
Woody hahahaha funny love this I’d watch you just being goofy from now on
I wish I had as much joy in my daily life as Woody.
Gus…. You were doing the wrong thing incorrectly!!! Duh!!!
My bad!...I mean, thank you?
Gus, looking great!
Woody making all those noises cracked me up 😄
Gus, you look 10 years younger my man. Whatever you are doing keep it up!
Gus, you always have the freshest haircut and beard.
Yeah, just watching this whole ordeal of tethering on and off made me exhausted 😅 Woody you crack me up, id be dead laughing if i ever dove with you 😂
I feel like there should be circus music playing in the background of this video.
OMG it's like watching Laurel & Hardy move a piano!🤣
I'm not a diver but what are your thoughts about the use of reflectors being placed every 50 ft or so? One side Red the other side Green. Green for forward, red for exit.
What do you mean "sides" though? There's only one line and it twists and rotates like a piece of line does. There's no left or right side on a rope. The system arrows, placed by the original explorers and maintained by the divers frequenting the cave, already perform that fucntion. They point to the exit, always, and are distinguishable by touch. Reflectors are a neat idea, and some brands of arrows have them, like Mares, but in general when you need arrows you're in a situation where the viz is bad enough that you can't see that far. Another factor is probably that nobody pays divers to maintain the caves. It's volunteer work and line and arrows are generally paid by themselves. Simple plastic arrows are cheaper than the ones I've seen with reflecting tape.
Woody sounded like Cha-Ka from Land of the Lost. 🐒 🤣
OMG 😂 I’ve never laughed with a video like this 😂😂😂
Imagine cave divers coming out and seeing you guys doing this, I would pee myself 😂😂😂😂😂
I'm stopping at 10:38 ish for a serious question: Given the camera sees so much better in limited visibility [and not actually being a diver myself] Do they have some kind of Camera HMD overlay for goggles? Would that even HELP in a low vis situation? [edit, I meant "question" not "quesiton"
I don't think so
Lol you guys are crazy 🤣 Note to self: if I ever get the courage to go cave diving do NOT tether myself to the guide line ! 😊 Great video! Perfect!!
You don't just one day get up the courage to start cave diving. You have to start off with a lot of dives (200+ at least) then spend the money and the time to be certified tech diver. Then decide to start cave diving. Lots of time and dives in between to make that final decision.
I didn't hear "Tether me harder, Daddy." 😂 I can't stop laughing.
You guys can start a new PADI cert.
Intro to tethering and advanced tethering !
Should have two teachers one is always connected.😂😂
When ever you put yourself out on the interwebs you learn that you're always wrong, even when you're right.
From the looks of it, tethering to the line (except in certain exceptional circumstances and for very specific purposes) should probably fit in the list of safety features like the cervical safety harnesses of the early years... ;o)
Woody's octo stored like a Pro 👌
This is my first video learning about cave diving. I now know the importance of tethering to the line. Will do all the time. Safety first!!
I have to catch up on your reaction videos ❤ starting here 😊
Is there any situation where tethering would be needed? Not saying on the gold line but on a line in general.
There are situations where you can be on a Deco stop after a deep dive and there are too many divers on the same line trying to Deco at 20 ft or whatever. So they sell these “hooks” where you can good yourself to the line and move away from everyone else hanging on from it. I’ve never used them, but they could perhaps maybe possibly be useful and the only reason to tether yourself to a line.
In open water with strong current some divers tether themselves to a rock with a hook and line so they can float like a kite while watching the wildlife around them.
Looking great Gus! Way to go, bro!
