When Arsenal Bid £40,000,001 For Luis Suárez

  • In the 2013 summer transfer window, Arsenal famously - or infamously - bid £40 million, plus £1, for Liverpool's star man Luis Suárez.
    The Gunners were told by the player's agent, Pere Guardiola, that Suarez had a £40 million release clause written into his Liverpool contract - but the bid was rejected, and it turned Arsenal's recruitment into a laughing stock.
    Ten years on, HITC Sevens takes at perhaps the most important Premier League transfer that never happened, the truth behind the contested clause in Suarez's contract, and the legacy of football's most famous failed transfer bid.

      I agree but I think there was more to the clause. If not Liverpool would have been forced to sell through the Court of Arbitration for Sport. I gather there was some legalese that Liverpool used to get around it. Solictors from both Arsenal and Liverpool would have been all over it. Also, £40,000,001 is just bad faith. If Arsenal had come in with say, £45,000,000 it probably would have brought Liverpool to the table.

    • @HNezlxrd
      @HNezlxrd 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@M1d32 The clause probably was missunderstood by Suarez and his agent, If there was a 40m clause and Arsenal met it and Liverpool turned it down, this would have gone to court and Arsenal would have won. My theory is that there was two clauses, one of 40m and a higher one, the lower one was the one advertised to Suarez and his agent, but it had demands in the fine prints on which teams could activate it. Like "Can only be a team outside EPL" etc. And the higher one, was for any teams, just so that Liverpool could say "If any team meets the clause we will sell you" when Suarez signed.

    The infamous £40000001 bid not only proved how stupid Arsenal were in negotiations at the time, Liverpool weren't entertaining any negotiations with Arsenal and Arsenal missed out on Higuain at the same period to Napoli. The bid that chased the course of Liverpool and Arsenal for a decade.
    Had Liverpool accepted the bid, no question Liverpool would be dreaming of playing Champions League football and ending their 3 decade wait of winning the Premier League title. Arsenal on that same contrast would win their first Premier League title for 10 years and Leicester City would be 2nd that time with Arsenal winning another Premier League title with Alexis Sanchez backing up Suarez. Instead Liverpool missed out on the Premier League title in 2014, however Klopp arrived in 2015 and we all know what happened since and Arsenal went deep into mediocrity and allowed Leicester to do the unthinkable by winning the Premier League title and went without Champions League football for six years with more mediocre players like Mustafi, Sanogo, Lichtsteiner, Sokratis, MKH and Pepe stinking up Arsenal.
    The infamous bid was a stuff of legends in football. It was unforgettable for Liverpool to harden their resolve to keep Suarez and further cement Arsenal as the status of mediocrity and disillusionment for years at the time. Football is a funny sport and this storyline saga will be remembered for generations.

    • @kevinjenkins6657
      @kevinjenkins6657 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Your spot on here, the more you think of it the more the last decade could have changed because of this bid. Liverpool accept, and they almost certainly reinvest that poorly, Charlie Adam, Andy Carrol, Mario Ballotelli, Fabio Borini, Lazar Markovic era. If they still looked that bad perhaps Klopp would never come. Arsenal could have picked up the 13-14, 14-15. 15-16 titles and who know that momentum could have carried them on for more in what really became the Pep-Klopp era.

    • @lwandomadikizela2213
      @lwandomadikizela2213 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@kevinjenkins6657 Correct. Liverpool would indeed invest in the Suarez a year earlier than expected but since they did invest poorly during the Adam, Borini, Downing, Allen era, Klopp wouldn't even consider joining Liverpool and even if he did, Liverpool would be far more deep in mediocrity than Arsenal were. Arsenal on the other hand would be title contenders for years and better players would be joining instead of relying Giroud, Walcott, Ramsey and Wilshire to take Arsenal to the next level. City wouldn't be walking the Premier League for the last 5 years albeit Liverpool can close on both occasions and winning one Premier League title. Arsenal would have won 3 more Premier League titles at least and maybe go deep in the Champions League. The last decade could have been a lot different for both clubs had Liverpool accepted the offer.

      Some greater players are sold for less than their on pitch value because teams are desperate to get rid of them.
      Others are sold for more than they're truly worth because teams are desperate to acquire them.

    • @hitthurdeaux
      @hitthurdeaux 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Essentially, it’s the old phrase “the rich get richer” but applied to football.
      To win the treble you need to have a truly great team. It’s far easier today to build a great team (if you’re at the top of the pyramid, of course) than it was in yesteryear, especially before the 90s when the EU foreigner limit was in place and when the hyper-commercialization of the game hadn’t yet occurred.
      Today top teams can buy many more top class and world class players, have essentially no limit on importing foreign talent, and can build larger squads with superior bench players owing to their deeper finances affording such players. They can sign the excellent players that routinely win matches and tournaments, as well as the good players that can come off the bench and seal a scrappy but necessary win in the league or the cup as the starters rest/recover. Add to this the vastly superior nutrition/fitness/health science, technology, and resources available and your ability to fight on all 3 fronts for 10 months becomes greater.
      Finally, it’s worth mentioning that since UEFA made it easier to qualify for the Champions League in the mid-90s, 3 of the 6 European treble winners won editions of the tournament in which they would not have previously qualified as they hadn’t won their league the season before, so United 1998-99, Bayern 2012-13, and Barcelona 2014-15’s trebles would not have happened

    Video suggestion: ranking every Champions league season since (whatever year you deem fit), based on shocks, comebacks, quality of final, quality of football, iconic memorable moments.
    For example, last years CL will probably be quite far down the list but the 21/22 season would be much higher cos of Real Madrid’s run where they were the underdog at some stage in every single round from Ro16

    I think that Liverpool US guy only sees sport through the US lense where they own the player and can do with them what they want (i.e. trade anywhere without consent, etc.) - aka modern slavery. He also did not seem to be able to distinguish between a release clause and a player just wanting to move.
    Also, Suarez and his agent should know if the contract had any release clause. If Liverpool simply ignored it that is literally breach of contract and they could have gone to court and they surely would have if it existed. So I doubt that it actually existed.
    Either way, still hoping for that Austrian Wunderteam video 😇✌.
