Crested gecko humid enclosures plants that worked for me: calathea (stromanthe thalia) for the background as they are quite tall, birds nest fern is quite hardy, likes moisture and doesnt require too much light, parlour palm (this one thrives most for me), alocasia mortfontanensis, dracena marginata and ZZ plant (this one thrives on neglect, honestly!)
They need plenty of sun to flower, they're actually succulent type that likes a lot of sun even though they tolerate darker places they won't actually be happy so to speak
Plants are related to the environment they like. So some plants are need humid and wet conditions. Other like succulents and cacti need hot, dry and very bright condition. Check houseplant website that will give you plant needs. Fitonia will not do well in a dry environment. So you need to divide your plants between tropical and desert. You can't just say what's good for a bioactive terrarium. It's what's ok for a tropical humid terrarium or what's great for a dry desert terrarium. So the key is researching the plants and see the environment they like. Some thrive in a humid bathrooms. Others will be fine in your home with central heating. The key is researching your plants. Bioactive herpes sells plants and divide by environment. Check them out.
Any plant covered in trichomes, those cool little hairs, won't take to misting. The trichomes hold water so long the leaves are intolerant to it, or can quickly take to rotting
Hi! I was wondering if you were worried about the spikes on the star bromeliad you showed, scratching up the geckos? I recently bought 3 different bromeliads and when I received them in the mail and opened the package, I seen that they all had these very sharp spikes on them, I’m worried if I put them in my tanks they would shred my geckos. Someone told me to cut the spikes off, do you have any advise on this?
My gardening store told me that the guzmanian is toxic or I looked it up and it looked exactly like mine so I am not sure if it is safe for cresties. But I could be wrong I don't know what the garden store worker told me but I googled it and I was wrong😁
Agree entirely with you, I have tried some of the same plants with similar results. I think my viv got to warm in the summer for some of the plants like ferns. Thanks for sharing.
Jungle succulents may work better for you. Things like Christmas cacti like fairly wet setups but not super so you could avoid it. Most succulents are from dry climates.
yeah, I did read the Christmas cactus is safe for cresties, my mum has always had them, and I was tempted to add one a while ago, but yeah they're a little tricky.
+Leopard Gecko Shoot I forgot to think if it was ok for them. I believe its poisonous to cats and dogs. They are tricky because they dont want to be in mud but dont want to be bone dry.
Adiantum raddianum doesn’t like to much humidity, I found this out the hard way as I had one in my garg tank and it died within a month. I later asked my friend who is a horticulture expert why and he said about the humidity. Which was a shame because it looked great 👍🏻
I don't know if this is a stupid question but how do you wash live plants in the tank or do you wash them. Because I am planning to buy a creted gecko sune and want to know everything I need to...
Always wash the plants before putting them into a terrarium. Plants may conatins pestesides and fertlizes which might harm aniamls in the enclouser. They may also come with pests.
Your tank is so nice looking! I can tell the work you put into it. I’m just wondering on the moss you have on the bottom of your tank what it’s called where you got it and how it’s doing. Looking for new moss because I think the moss I got from Lowe’s wasn’t cleaned and might have let little bugs and stuff travel to my cage.
Some areas have "hard" water that has excessive amounts of minerals (mostly magnesium and calcium). These minerals are bad for your plants, so you shouldn't use hard water directly on them. You also shouldn't use hard water that's been run through a household softener; the salt used in softeners is also bad for the plants. If you've got hard water, filter it with a simple carbon-type filter from the hardware store. You can also use a pitcher-type filtering system sold for drinking water. This filtering removes the minerals without adding other chemicals.
with bioactive enclosures you never really need to change out the substrate, since there are isopods/springtails to clean up, although you should sift through it with a fork every once in a while
HELP! I bought my gecko a few weeks ago, and suddenly it has layed an egg? Because it was housed with a male where I bought it, so I don't know if the egg is fertile or not! However when I bought her she showed no signs of laying an egg. WHAT DO?
NVM! I found out what to do and the eggs are alive, they may even hatch around my birthday because the eggs are fertile :DWhen the babies are 10 weeks old (and they are hand tamed) I will probably sell them for about £20.
Your orchids could be about to go dormant. My orchid just went dormant and they are only in bloom for a couple months. Cut back that flower spike once it starts to loose all its flowerz
I got my leopard gecko a new cold hide and she seems to like it more than her hot hide. Should I switch the cold hide and hot hide or will that mess her up? Also, great video!
What temperature is the heat hide it should be about 30 degrees Celsius. Anyway maybe she just likes that hide, it's perfectly normal I think, my gecko does it anyway
i have 2 sempervivums in my back yard planter and its doing fantastic. but it did not belong to me in the first place, i had never paid any attention to it until a couple days ago. (it never got watered for 5 years but was still alive. the other day a noticed the bottom leaves where looking and feeling kind of mushy so i watered them, and after that they looked much better. it just goes to show you they can't go for ever without water, but they can go quite a while without water.
Hello, I have a leopard gecko. Right now her tank looks pretty boring. I'm wondering what kind of plant would be nice to put in there. (I use reptile carpet, so it would have to be in some kind of pot or something)
The maidenhair fern is native to my area San Francisco Bay Area in CA so they don't like to be wet all the time and about the vanilla orchid that definitely needs more light and it will do much better.
Aw awesome, well I'm glad I could help :) not everyone is into the plant videos, but I think live plants are the way forward in terms of gecko tanks lol
+Leopard Gecko the plant video was really nice for people like me I was planning to rewatch your past videos to try to catch the name of the plants I like in your tanks. I have always loved small critters and happen to have a green thumb so I looked to make a tank much like yours. I must say I am a big fan of your channel. I am very happy to hear how much you care about the well being and happyness of all your pets :)
thank you :) though they were shots from when they were first done, a few things have grown and been changed around since, I should really do an update :')
Do u cut the bromeliad pups off? if yes, maybe thats why they didnt do well. The vanilla probably likes the minerals in tap water so once u changed to bottle water it stopped growing. Also tillandsias dont like terrarium conditions cos they like low humidity and lots of air movement, especially the species that have more little silver hairs on them.
nah you have to wait til the pups are about 1/3 of the size of the adult plant to remove them, but in most cases the adult plant is half dead and I just want to remove it from the tank, however I currently have a Neoregelia (fireball) brom, which has been growing a put for ages, I have finally separated them today, and I think it may grow *fingers crossed*. Yeah, I now have to give the vanilla orchid its own water :') yeah air plants are just a big no no lol
Yes, but eco earth on its isnt the best, a mix of organic potting soil, sand and eco earth and orhcid bark is a better mixtuer, at least for tropical enclousers.
Also, I thought anthuriums were poisonous if ingested? Harmless to a gecko if only fed live things outside the terrarium like I know you do, but not if the insects are the plant!
Can some won help me I'm 11 years old and I got my crested gecko like 9 days ago he is 8 moths old and he is skinny I need to make him fater plese help
+Shadow Games well he should start eating soon but animals especially reptiles and birds need a longer settling in time my royal didn't eat for 4 weeks granted he only needs to be fed once a week but just give him/her a few days and also are you having there food higher up on maybe a canopy feeder or a makeshift canopy feeder I've seen people attach milk lids to a bit of wood or the side so the gecko will more likely eat it as not on the floor
+Shadow Games It won't gain weight over night, bear in mind. As long as your gecko is eating well, it may not seem to be growing at all for a while. I would offer appropriately sized and dusted insects maybe twice a week (crickets, locusts and roaches are the better options) to help it grow. Some take a while to grow as well, someone I know has a gecko they rescued and it is taking ages to get any bigger. I wouldn't be worried as long as it is hydrated, active and healthy.
Patiently waiting until I can do what you are doing for the gecko's! Great job, and thanks for sharing. Your helping us pet fans not have to guess on what works!
ah yeah, I often see the palms in tanks, but I'm yet to try them, my local shop usually only sells massive ones which are too big for my gecko's tanks.
Ugh I have to wait like 7 months to get either a crestie or a leopard gecko. I was wondering which one would be good for me as a starter, temp is not a problem.
Definitely leopard geckos, if you can't afford a good tank for them they can be in tubs for the time being, and they only need a couple of hides (one with a heat mat and one without) and maybe another (moist hide) for when their shedding. And the crested gecko will need a tall and more expensive tank with lots of plants that can get expensive
I'd say crested geckos are easier to take care if since they don't need heat or live insects, but I have a couple of Leopard geckos and they're very easy to take care of. You need to spray crested geckos once or twice daily, but that's not a big deal. It's up to you.
Depends on preference crested (/gargoyle they are kind of larger cresties) or leopard and also depends on if it's a long term pet for example my ball python is about 7 so should have him for another 10-13 years granted geckos typically don't live as long personally in a few weeks I should be getting a pair of cresties and setting them up in a bio active viv
I have a few questions. 1) does my leopard gecko need a heat mat? The pet store workers said no. 2) does my gecko need a specialized light? 3) could it be possible that my gecko is bored of only eating Mealworms? Since he won't even eat anything after I encouraged him using your ways. 4) my geckos toes looks a bit weird, likes it bent to one side. 5) how do I know it's shedding? Compared to its first day when I got him, his skin was more brighter? Now it's kinda dull, and I sprayed some water gently, but no skin came off after doing this for a week. 6) my gecko won't eat, and the tail is slowly getting thinner and thinner. Please help 7)I take my gecko out of its cage a lot, is that a possible reason why he's still not used to his new environment. If so, how long should I leave him be? (I just got him for a total of eight days)
I know im late but for future reference, Melisa Wong they need heat mats, don't need lights, try a cricket, idk about 4 contact a vet, sounds like its going to shed, they won't eat during shed, try leaving him alone for another week (obviously offer food, I just mean limit handling)
Lol I'm laughing through the entirety of this video. Succulents=desert. I think it's hilarious to see someone put succulents in a tropical terrarium. All in good humor my friend
It's probably because I live in California and we're still in a drought somehow and so people legally have the option to get rid of grass and put in place rocks and succulents since they don't need much water (in certain cities this is actually illegal; I really never understand the hypocrisy of these laws)
Hmm... there are PLENTY of succulents that do just fine in tropical climates. Succulent does NOT necessarily equal desert - they're one of the most versatile types of plants on the planet.
what is the size tank that you use? b/c i want to make a vivarium for my female crested and i dont know if I should get a 12"12"18" or a 18"18"24" tank.
If u or a family member have an iPhone past 4 then ask Siri where the nearest reptile shop is you could also try online for example I live in West Sussex UK I could put in to google reptile shops West Sussex and you should get a load in your local area me and my mum secretly whilst my stepdad is out find reptile shops and see what there like so far done this once as randomly found one once
Hi I love your videos and they're super helpful but I was wondering I bought a gecko today and at the moment it's night time here but he's very skinny also when I got him the lady told me he didn't like hunting crickets meaning he had to be hand fed or he preferred meal worms but I tried feeding him an already dead cricket like the lady suggested but he seems very un interested and I'm worried there may be something wrong with him :(
+Leopard Gecko and one more question, can they be kept on mealwarms as basic food, because as I see crickets are making a lot of noise, and they smell really bad
Very helpful video :) I've just set up my first natural terrarium for my crestie. I haven't used snake plant though just because they have those points at the top and I didn't want him getting hurt if he fell or misjudged a jump. Great video!&
thanks! ah nice :) I wouldn't worry about the snake plant, ive never noticed them to be sharp or anything, and the geckos have never had a problem with them :)
Hey I'm just wondering how it's going with the pothos in with your crested? My gecko is 5 y/o, I've had him since birth and go through multitudes of plants regularly. I recently placed a large, hearty g.pothos in the enclosure and I thought it most peculiar that he did not take to it at all, which is something he usually does immediately with all new plants, he's like a kid with a new toy. But with this plant, I never saw him on it or in it, and he even seemed sluggish after a few days and I thought maybe he's sick. I went to internet for research and got conflicting info on this plant as far as whether it's toxic or not. I do feed crickets on the occasion so I'm glad this video called out the live feeders with ivy, etc. I immediately yanked the plant out and closely monitored the gecko around the clock and within a day he seemed to have sprung back to life. So I guess I have my own personal answer here, I just wanted to check around, see if anyone had any similar experinces? Thanks and best of luck with your c.g!
... You've got to be kidding me I went to my iPad to do research for plants for my bio active viv along with potentially plants that are ok with chameleons as most bio active plants kill them making it very hard for setup (haven't watched yet...)
damn, that's some good timing! yeah I saw a panther cham in a natural tank, in a shop the other day and it was eating some of the plants lol, I just hope they were safe ones.
+Leopard Gecko ... Again got to be kidding me the reason me and my mum ( the person in which I share the amazing hobby of reptile keeping with) initially wanted a chameleon is because we saw a large panther that we knew wouldn't be treated well as an alcoholic ordered her off the internet
+Leopard Gecko and I'm ecstatic today I set up my bio active big this morning and whilst looking for places to digest geckos for future and she called to ask my local rspca (Brighton) to see and they in the last week got a load in but they would go quickly and one thing led to another and I now have a adult male frog bum crestie iphe is gorgeous but don't have a name yet XD
your tank is soo amazing! it reminds me of a real rainforest!!
Crested gecko humid enclosures plants that worked for me: calathea (stromanthe thalia) for the background as they are quite tall, birds nest fern is quite hardy, likes moisture and doesnt require too much light, parlour palm (this one thrives most for me), alocasia mortfontanensis, dracena marginata and ZZ plant (this one thrives on neglect, honestly!)
the "snake plants" (a.k.a. "mother-in-law's tongue") will also make delicate white flowers if it's happy -- they're quite lovely~~
Ah really? I look forward to seeing them :), the plant seems to keep growing, but I've yet to see flowers.
They need plenty of sun to flower, they're actually succulent type that likes a lot of sun even though they tolerate darker places they won't actually be happy so to speak
Pro tip. While researching i found that most succulents get suffocated due to over watering because they need to absorb more oxygen than water!
Plants are related to the environment they like. So some plants are need humid and wet conditions. Other like succulents and cacti need hot, dry and very bright condition. Love this channel
Where do you get your plants?
I get mine from reptilecentre if this helps good price too you can order them off web or if you live close you can collect i got mine delivered
My gardening store told me that the guzmanian is toxic or I looked it up and it looked exactly like mine so I am not sure if it is safe for cresties. But I could be wrong

yeah, its a little annoying, but as I said the snake plant does well, just got to remember not to water it much haha
You should do a leopard gecko plant video!
Adiantum raddianum doesn’t like to much humidity, I found this out the hard way as I had one in my garg tank and it died within a month. I later asked my friend who is a horticulture expert why and he said about the humidity. Which was a shame because it looked great 👍🏻
can you list the bad and good plants. hard to follow on the video. thanks
What a perfect video! thank you
Great video! Very helpful

Sorry I may be months late but the best kind of Moss for the ground is pillow moss

@@kropka8259 well said
Thank you so much for this. I've been looking for moisture friendly plants for my veiled chameleon cage this is a good start
Aw awesome! :)
What size of tank do you have?
18x18x24
Are croton wicks toxic?
What do you do with the plants when your changing the substrate
with bioactive enclosures you never really need to change out the substrate, since there are isopods/springtails to clean up, although you should sift through it with a fork every once in a while

Leopard Gecko but it's sorted now
Your orchids could be about to go dormant. My orchid just went dormant and they are only in bloom for a couple months. Cut back that flower spike once it starts to loose all its flowerz

Thanks to your vid I did two live terrariums
no problem :) ah awesome!
Red Aglaonema is a really good plant and seems to be doing well and is safe for Cresties
nice, thanks, I just googled it, colourful plant :)
i have 2 sempervivums in my back yard planter and its doing fantastic. but it did not belong to me in the first place, i had never paid any attention to it until a couple days ago. Hello, I have a leopard gecko. Right now her tank looks pretty boring. I'm wondering what kind of plant would be nice to put in there. (I use reptile carpet, so it would have to be in some kind of pot or something)
What is better a leopard gecko or a crested gecko
tough decision, I did a video comparing the too. I'm just glad that I'd never head of crested geckos when I got my first leo - never had to choose :')
The maidenhair fern is native to my area San Francisco Bay Area in CA so they don't like to be wet all the time and about the vanilla orchid that definitely needs more light and it will do much better.
ah nice! yeah, it did not enjoy the tank lol. The vanilla orchid in Lyra's tank is pretty much directly under the light lol.
Air plants not easy put in my place. I had no luck with them too
What substrate did you use for your plants and crested gecko
what type of plants do I use for monitor lizards(baby)
Fake plants as they will destroy real plants.
yeah, fake. they will most likely trample them
Hey I know I'm late to this conversation but check the Biodude's video on bioactive terrariums for ackie monitors
If I get a crested gecko I was thinking of putting a little pond in the corner of the tank or will that be to much humidity
dragon chaos77 i may be wromg but i think they can drown if there is deep water in their tanks
oaken siren ok they could fall off a not very stable leaf I will make sure that it is shallow and easy to get out of
What type of lighting would you use? I've attempted to use live plants along with fake plants in my tank and they always die from lack of light.
Felecia Stacey
Arcadia jungle dawn

I'll look forward to it ;)
Wow, I have a bunch of Hens and Chicks in pots around the house, definitely will put some of them in the tank when I get one!
to raise the pups you could replace them with another plant and let them grow out of the tank, then once they are adults put them back in
what moss do you use to carpet your tank?
Thank you so much I am building a natural terrarium for my frogs and couldn't find any good plant videos
awesome, no problem :D
Do u cut the bromeliad pups off? if yes, maybe thats why they didnt do well. The vanilla probably likes the minerals in tap water so once u changed to bottle water it stopped growing. This video has been so useful. I’m getting ready to start setting up a bio active tank
Yay another video from my favorite TH-camr!
thank you! :D
can you use Eco earth to grow plants?
Raging_Crocodile yes you can
Yes, but eco earth on its isnt the best, a mix of organic potting soil, sand and eco earth and orhcid bark is a better mixtuer, at least for tropical enclousers.
Thanks
I do believe Earth stars turn a dark, royal purple colour in powerful light! Good video!
Also, I thought anthuriums were poisonous if ingested? Harmless to a gecko if only fed live things outside the terrarium like I know you do, but not if the insects are the plant!

great video!
ah yeah, I often see the palms in tanks, but I'm yet to try them, my local shop usually only sells massive ones which are too big for my gecko's tanks.
Is the only watering that is needed to be done is the misting twice a day? Or do you do more for the plants
Can anyone suggest some good plants for a corn snake and ball python viv? Or helpful links?
Great video! :)
what type of lighting do you use in your live viviariums that dosent harm crested geckos?
Leopard geckos... I wanna do a live viv for them... May I have some aid and advice please
Ugh I have to wait like 7 months to get either a crestie or a leopard gecko. I was wondering which one would be good for me as a starter, temp is not a problem.

its always a tough decision lol
Here is a silly question but how do you produce shade in a bio active setup
Thanks for helping me out so much!!!! Your knowledge is so valuable
Is moss an okay substrate for a leopard gecko terrarium?
Hey... Quick question.... Does she have a vid on how to set up a natural background! If so put link down there 👇🏾
Yea she does just look it up on the channel
Yeah I've put them in playlists, I build the entire tanks :)
I'm thinking about buying my first gecko but I'm not sure if I should buy a baby gecko or an adult
Yes
Just yes
Depends on preference crested (/gargoyle they are kind of larger cresties) or leopard and also depends on if it's a long term pet for example my ball python is about 7 so should have him for another 10-13 years granted geckos typically don't live as long personally in a few weeks I should be getting a pair of cresties and setting them up in a bio active viv
I think an adult is better for a first time keeper.
Cupcakes and Chevron thank you
How long would you say a baby leopard gecko tank should be
45-60cm.
do you need a uv lamp to have live plants?
How do you clean these? do you just spot clean?
I'd love for my Leo to have a live plant, which would you recommend for his terrarium?
ive heard succulents may work, but yeah theres not much info out there sadly :/
Do plants need to be chemically treated to be put in terrariums?
No they should be watched with water, roots and all with a small drop of dawn soup. This will remove any harmful chemicals or pests
i think you should the Ficus benjami plant cause my get crested gecko loves it
If you ever need ground cover or a climbing plant, just put a small patch of baby tears and you'll never kill it!!!!
thanks, I may look into that, though I am prone to accidentally killing plants in terrariums :')
How about the spider wort?
Nice vid. Very useful.
thanks :D
Please help
7)I take my gecko out of its cage a lot, is that a possible reason why he's still not used to his new environment. If so, how long should I leave him be?
(I just got him for a total of eight days)
You need a heat mat and no specialized light btw I recommend feeding crickets and mealworms. Ps: Your gecko sounds stressed
Shut up
Hmm... there are PLENTY of succulents that do just fine in tropical climates. Succulent does NOT necessarily equal desert - they're one of the most versatile types of plants on the planet.
Very helpful thankyou
what is the size tank that you use? b/c i want to make a vivarium for my female crested and i dont know if I should get a 12"12"18" or a 18"18"24" tank.
The Geeky Gecko I'm like 80% sure she uses the 18x18x24 I use t for one and it's great
thx a lot! :D
I am going to get one soon and I need to no were to buy
If u or a family member have an iPhone past 4 then ask Siri where the nearest reptile shop is you could also try online for example I live in West Sussex UK I could put in to google reptile shops West Sussex and you should get a load in your local area me and my mum secretly whilst my stepdad is out find reptile shops and see what there like so far done this once as randomly found one once
I live in Basildon and I go to Wiltons pet shop in Pitsea,Essex, England
So pet shops or breeders I recommend
Air plants will work, if you don't mist them. They shouldn't be watered, since they absorb water from the air
Can you put banbbu
IS EVERGREEN TREE BRANCHES SAFE FOR CRESTED GECKOS? I looked everywhere cannot find the info
No. A lot of evergreen trees give off substances toxic to reptiles. Try using a golden pothos, they grow well as long as they are watered.
So jealous of her vanilla orchid
Great video
thank you :)
We're did you get your crested gecko
Is it ok if I paint my hide ? With water color ?
No, the paint will just run off, and could be toxic to the animal.
+Leopard Gecko when can leopard geckos breed ?
Probably spring
Whats a good plant for gold dust day gecko terrarium?
Hi I love your videos and they're super helpful but I was wondering I bought a gecko today and at the moment it's night time here but he's very skinny also when I got him the lady told me he didn't like hunting crickets meaning he had to be hand fed or he preferred meal worms but I tried feeding him an already dead cricket like the lady suggested but he seems very un interested and I'm worried there may be something wrong with him :(
Answer: That lady knew nothing about geckos...
Hi, is terrarium size of 400X250X300H (in cm) good for 1 leopard gecko or is it too small?
Do you mean in mm? So 400mm = 40 cm? I would say it's a tad too small. You wanna kind of aim for about 60cm length, 45 cm width and height.
+Leopard Gecko okay, thank's for replying :)
+Leopard Gecko and one more question, can they be kept on mealwarms as basic food, because as I see crickets are making a lot of noise, and they smell really bad
Nice vid your awesome
aw thanks :D
No problem your vids are awesome and the best I have a log of geckos and you are teaching a lot thanks you
+Dragon Gamerz I really appreciate that :D
I was wondering where did you get Diego I'm looking into getting a leo and I really wanna know
did u get yours off craigslist
So where can you buy safe plants and can i put real plants with fake plants?
In America, maybe Callaways, but anywhere else, I have no idea. And as with #2, why not? Go right ahead. Sure.
Very helpful video, especially for a plant-killer like myself :)
I need some mouse safe plants I know this is probably not the best place to ask but does anyone know anything good?
i miss your ant videos!!
haha, they're a monthly thing like a loot crate, or a period.
@@leopardgeckotalk hahaha
Very helpful video :) I've just set up my first natural terrarium for my crestie. I haven't used snake plant though just because they have those points at the top and I didn't want him getting hurt if he fell or misjudged a jump. Great video!&
thanks! ah nice :) I wouldn't worry about the snake plant, ive never noticed them to be sharp or anything, and the geckos have never had a problem with them :)
Thanks for the video, i'm about to start a terrarium with a crested gecko and am going to start with Pothos and Bromeliad... wish me luck!
+SlayerZPrime omg! lol this is so similar :)
+Leopard Gecko what is?? The story??
+Leopard Gecko and I'm ecstatic today I set up my bio active big this morning and whilst looking for places to digest geckos for future and she called to ask my local rspca (Brighton) to see and they in the last week got a load in but they would go quickly and one thing led to another and I now have a adult male frog bum crestie iphe is gorgeous but don't have a name yet XD
sempervivums also need the dead bottom leaves pulled off
