- Although we're not using this bioactive Crested gecko setup with a waterfall for a crested gecko when infact were using this as a bioactive mourning gecko setup this bioactive setup can still be used for crested geckos. We show how to make a bioactive terrarium with a waterfall that could be used for crested geckos. We are going to be using this for our mourning gecko colony . This is a complete guide to building a tropical bioactive setup from scratch . Start to finish everything you need to know. How to make a waterfall is in this video along with loads more hints and tips on how to make a bioactive setup with a waterfall.

Small tip - smearing some silicone onto the glass helps the foam stick much better!

Thanks for this. I bought a terrarium the same dimensions that would eventually house 2 to 3 dart frogs. I live in an older house that stays around 61 to 65°F or between 16 to 18°C in the winter time. I wanted to get supplemental heat and I thought a heating pad would be too obstructive so an aquarium heater would do the trick in the drainage layer so I decided I wanted to make a little waterfall/pond area and get a species that didn’t mind a water feature. This gives me great ideas!

I just found a free 55gal aquarium on the side of the road and want to turn it into a terrarium and get a few female crested geckos. I’m glad this is the first video I watched, I’m feeling daunted but excited to start this project!

white vinegar works great for removing calcium deposits and doesnt risk scratching the glass.
I’m definitely gonna do this when I get a crested gecko.

Wow that was crazy! My daughter wants to do something like this for her gecko. If you’ve ever seen a baking show on Netflix called “Nailed It” that pretty much sums up what I think our version would look like compared to yours. A total disaster. But you definitely make it look possible so maybe one day we will try doing it without the water feature and the fogger. Thanks for sharing!

Hey Richard congrats on finally finishing and uploading, I like the waterfall. I was never successful with mine, water went evrywhere except where I wanted it to go lol.
I had the same issue but nothing a bit of extra slate to direct the water wouldn't fix haha
@@NORTHERNEXOTICS Well it looks good. Mine was too complicated involving expanding foam and cork bark and a series of pools and a pebble wall..... every adjustment led to another leak/flaw/etc being revealed finally I just called it a day and put plants in all the "pools" My Crested Gecko trampled them all to death and/or dug them out lol. In the end I ripped the whole lot out (after a year). Oh boy was that a job and a half!!. I built it all to stay put and it didn't want to come out. Now its very simple she has Her Rubber Plant and a couple more live plants and some cork bark and rocks (all able to be removed if needed). A plain flat coco fibre back ground and bioactive substrate.
My Male Crestie has the same setup but a slightly more elaborate . He has coconut hides (home made). He is an acrobat and has destroyed all his ground level plants bar one. He has a big Dracanea in the centre and some fake plants too and two rock pools.

gargoyle gecko would be my choice. but i would prefer a much larger tank. seemed awfully small for a gecko anything besides a poison dart frog that seems a bit restrictive on space
I suggest making the background on some insulation foam and then siliconeing it in
Good job. Thinking of going bioactive, but I live in rural Kansas in the US, and I refuse to pay $50 in shipping for a $5 culture of springtails... Hopefully I can find some in the city when I go to visit in a month or two when things hopefully open up...

Next time use a mister instead. They need a lot of humidity, however foggers are unhealthy for crested geckos, and any geckos. Misters provide humidity and plenty of water to drink. Looks fantastic though, great job! You and Dr. Plants said the same things in your videos!

Absolutely blown my mind that has bud , just amazing. One question I know it’s a living eco system but what ever species you add to this to put it bluntly is going to shit , this is impossible to clean whit this set up does it not need to be removed?

l am about to start a bioactive setup for my snakes, but l wont be waiting a month to put them back in LOL. Done then add the snake, not quite as sensitive as little Geckos though. IT looked amazing and l cant wait to get mine going.

Have you tried water with vinegar for the calcium deposits? just have to rinse it a few times after to make sure you don't leave any vinegar behind.
I'm new to this stuff tho but I know vinegar works wonders for calcium deposits. Just watch out with ceramics

This looks amazing! And a perfect timing, too - I will be making a bioactive setup for my crestie in a couple of weeks.
If you want to make cleaning of the glass a bit easier, spray it thoroughly with vinegar/ lime juice + water and let it sit for a few minutes. The acid will dissolve the limescale, so you won't need to use the scraper. You may have to repeat the process if the buildup is bad.
Also - learn from my mistakes: if you are using aquarium silicone with acetoxy cure (smells of vinegar), you want to work outside, or in a REALLY well-ventilated room. Otherwise the fumes will burn your throat, and you will be croaking like a bloody frog for a week.

Depends how big it is. Can bake it, freeze it or just leave it to dry for a year until it's truly dead and no parasites or infestations on it

You put a hole in the bottom of the planter cups but then stuck them into the foam, blocking the drainage hole. Did you drill out the foam under the cup so it could drain?

I love it. How many crested gecko could you put in there? Looks like with all of that it might only be room for one now. When I do mine if I don’t want to take mine around the sides , but I just want to make a ledge or two and put a couple plants on the side can I just do that on the sides. I just want to do a back background, but when I seen how you did yours I got that ideal . So that’s my question. Your is petty awesome!

One question trying to build a similar tank and can’t figure out how you fit the fogger tube through the holes in the tank
If you use the aquarium product “ph down” it takes off the hard water stains :)
Just an FYI if you make the stainless steel screws air tight they will corrode

It's mourning geckos that are going in here. There smaller then a finger so they hide under the plant leaves and there is loads of nooks for them to hide however mourning geckos are very social animals and don't use hides

I’ve heard if you use PHdown on the glass it will cut through all the calcium deposits really quickly. I learned that from Emily on Snake Discovery.
Or just wet it and use a razor scraper sharp blade and it takes seconds

P.S distilled vinegar cleans easily, you spray it on, leave it, and the grime just wipes off then you just rinse well

Hey brilliant set up looks awesome, I am starting my gargoyle gecko upgrade soon and I was just wondering what heat source is the best as I want to have all sides filled with expanding foam. I currently have a heat mat on the outside of one side of my enclosure but would it be safe to do that on my new one thats covered in expanding foam. Thanks

Only question is, don’t the sides of the glass look like 💩 from that expanding foam? From a side eye view the vivarium looks like a white foamy mess i reckon.
