- Although we're not using this bioactive Crested gecko setup with a waterfall for a crested gecko when infact were using this as a bioactive mourning gecko setup this bioactive setup can still be used for crested geckos. We show how to make a bioactive terrarium with a waterfall that could be used for crested geckos. We are going to be using this for our mourning gecko colony . This is a complete guide to building a tropical bioactive setup from scratch . Start to finish everything you need to know. How to make a waterfall is in this video along with loads more hints and tips on how to make a bioactive setup with a waterfall.

Small tip - smearing some silicone onto the glass helps the foam stick much better!

This looks amazing! And a perfect timing, too - I will be making a bioactive setup for my crestie in a couple of weeks.
If you want to make cleaning of the glass a bit easier, spray it thoroughly with vinegar/ lime juice + water and let it sit for a few minutes. The acid will dissolve the limescale, so you won't need to use the scraper. You may have to repeat the process if the buildup is bad.
Also - learn from my mistakes: if you are using aquarium silicone with acetoxy cure (smells of vinegar), you want to work outside, or in a REALLY well-ventilated room. Otherwise the fumes will burn your throat, and you will be croaking like a bloody frog for a week.

l am about to start a bioactive setup for my snakes, but l wont be waiting a month to put them back in LOL. Done then add the snake, not quite as sensitive as little Geckos though. IT looked amazing and l cant wait to get mine going.
Hi - Great video. If you are monitoring messages, can you explain the fogger set up? Waterfall looks straight forward enough but I did not see how you set up the actual fogger and the water supply for it. Thanks.
gargoyle gecko would be my choice. but i would prefer a much larger tank. seemed awfully small for a gecko anything besides a poison dart frog that seems a bit restrictive on space
I did this for my first cresties but the humidity by the waterfall was too high. Perfect for other species that require 80 to 100% humidity
Absolutely blown my mind that has bud , just amazing. One question I know it’s a living eco system but what ever species you add to this to put it bluntly is going to shit , this is impossible to clean whit this set up does it not need to be removed?
I’ve heard if you use PHdown on the glass it will cut through all the calcium deposits really quickly. I learned that from Emily on Snake Discovery.
Or just wet it and use a razor scraper sharp blade and it takes seconds

Just an fyi for anyone wanting to use that water pump in there viv, they do get very slimy after about 30 days and you have to clean them out.😎
Is it possible to take the foam background out without it leaving any permanent smudges on the glass? Or is it possible to just wipe the foam off to clean it and you don’t have to take it out?
You can remove the foam from glass, and wont leave any marks

Cool but i would add some more extra hides for the gecko cause i can see that it doesn't have any "safe" hide👍
It's mourning geckos that are going in here. There smaller then a finger so they hide under the plant leaves and there is loads of nooks for them to hide however mourning geckos are very social animals and don't use hides

It’s not the best since it needs more hidings spots like a cork tube and also crested gecko naturally during water by leaves plus ur vines don’t look like vines. Currently I’ve made an enclosure and I used material that are naturally found plus dirt can be slippery. If u want to see a really good video which I copied of Syrpa Design shows everything so personally I would not use this for my created gecko but good luck 👍
You really want to be using 100% pure silicone, many external silicone's have chemicals added like anti discoloring etcs
I'm just about to start building my first bioactive enclosures for my crested geckos and you're not making it easy to not sign up for this absolute unit of a project and make an identical one to yours
Non toxic materials? I worry about residual fumes and or gasses lingering around and hurting my animals. That's about the only thing holding me back from doing this. Can the same be done for frogs?

Hey brilliant set up looks awesome, I am starting my gargoyle gecko upgrade soon and I was just wondering what heat source is the best as I want to have all sides filled with expanding foam. I currently have a heat mat on the outside of one side of my enclosure but would it be safe to do that on my new one thats covered in expanding foam. Thanks

Just an FYI if you make the stainless steel screws air tight they will corrode
You put a hole in the bottom of the planter cups but then stuck them into the foam, blocking the drainage hole. Did you drill out the foam under the cup so it could drain?
Thanks for this. I bought a terrarium the same dimensions that would eventually house 2 to 3 dart frogs. I live in an older house that stays around 61 to 65°F or between 16 to 18°C in the winter time. I wanted to get supplemental heat and I thought a heating pad would be too obstructive so an aquarium heater would do the trick in the drainage layer so I decided I wanted to make a little waterfall/pond area and get a species that didn’t mind a water feature. This gives me great ideas!

P.S distilled vinegar cleans easily, you spray it on, leave it, and the grime just wipes off then you just rinse well

To much humidity isn't good for a crested gecko. I heard fogers are to much for them.

Depends how big it is. Can bake it, freeze it or just leave it to dry for a year until it's truly dead and no parasites or infestations on it
Wow that was crazy! My daughter wants to do something like this for her gecko. If you’ve ever seen a baking show on Netflix called “Nailed It” that pretty much sums up what I think our version would look like compared to yours. A total disaster. But you definitely make it look possible so maybe one day we will try doing it without the water feature and the fogger. Thanks for sharing!

Might be a silly question but when you do a set up like this, do you size up the tank to make room for everything you add while still maintaining the minimum size requirements for the animal? I’m wondering if some people are buying say, 20 gallon tanks, filling them quite throughly with the expanding foam and plants and not leaving enough room for the animals. I want to do a bioactive but I’m worried about this 😖 how much bigger should you go?

For an example a Frilled dragon requires at least a 4 foot tall enclosure, so if I know I'm going to put a false bottom and add a decent amount of substrate I'll buy something a bit bigger like a 5ft enclosure. If you're worried about the sides of the enclosures then buy something that is about 3 inches wider (if you can't find something roughly 3 inches wider then look for something bigger than that.) Just know that it's almost always good to have more room for your reptiles. If the recommended enclosure size for your lizard is 18"x18"x12" then look for something a bit bigger, doesn't matter how much bigger because reptiles could always use more space (Just make sure you can still find your reptiles, you don't want tiny little frogs in a 5ft tank because you'll never find them all 😂) So to answer your question, sure. If you're working with the minimum size required enclosure but you're adding 2 inch thick backdrops and maybe 5 inch thick false bottoms then you should definitely look for something a bit bigger.
