NORTH VANCOUVER ISLAND TRIP | Visiting Port Hardy + Port McNeill + Telegraph Cove, BC

  • In today’s video, we continue our road trip across Vancouver Island in partnership with Trover, this time visiting three towns in the northern part of the island where we have lots of cool nature sightings and also come across some rather unusual attractions!
    First up, we visited Port Hardy where we casually encountered a bald eagle - locals were very calm about this occurrence but the three of us were standing by the water’s edge ooh-ing and ahh-ing at the display.
    Then, in Port McNeill, we came across the biggest burl in the world; we didn’t even know what a burl was up until our visit, so we’ll tell you guys all about it soon enough.
    And finally, we hit up the picturesque seaside village of Telegraph Cove, where we learned all about killer whales and came face to face with two deer who seemed blissfully unaware of our presence.
    It was a great day and we can’t wait to share it with you in this video!
    That bald eagle encounter pretty much made our visit to Port Hardy! We then walked along the waterfront, where we spotted a curious seal peeping its head out of the water, plus we saw some impressive totems. It was a short visit, but we really enjoyed the town.
    From there, we continued our drive towards Port McNeill, but we pulled down a logging road just shy of the town to visit a rather unique attraction. This right here is a burl; a burl is a knotty growth on a tree that can occur on the trunk, at the base of the tree, or even underground in the form of a rounded growth. It’s the result of stress on the tree due to injury, a fungus, or an insect infestation. This one here is apparently the world’s largest burl!
    We then drove into Port McNeill to have a little wander and check out the marina.
    We continued our drive towards Telegraph Cove, which may very well be the most picturesque town we visited during our whole Vancouver Island road trip. Telegraph Cove started out as a fishing and cannery village, but today it’s an eco-tourism destination where you can embark on a number of adventures including kayaking trips, whale watching excursions, and even grizzly bear tours.
    After our little mid afternoon treat, we walked over to the Whale Interpretive Centre, which was founded in 2002 and seeks to raise public awareness about marine mammals and the threats they face. The Whale Interpretive Centre is home to one of the best collections of marine mammal skeletons in British Columbia. Of course we added this place to Trover because it’s a must-visit if you make it out to Telegraph Cove.
    We didn’t hike more than 5 minutes before we had a surprise: two deer munching on shrubs and bushes! They were just a few meters away from us and their little snack must’ve been tasty because they didn’t even look at us.
    And that’s it for today’s adventures on Vancouver Island.

    NORTH VANCOUVER ISLAND TRIP | Visiting Port Hardy + Port McNeill + Telegraph Cove, BC:
    Come join us for an epic road trip to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada where we partner with Trover to cover the island from the south all the way up to the north. Unlike most Vancouver Island road trips and travel series which focus on the triangle of Vancouver, Nanaimo and Tofino, we branch off and visit lesser-known places such as Gold River, Port Alice and Malcolm Island just to name a few.
    Our trip to Vancouver Island starts off with a flight from Toronto to Vancouver, followed by the shortest flight of our lives from Vancouver to Victoria. From Victoria, we head to our base of Mount Washington in the central part of the island, where highlights include spotting black bears, hiking in Mount Washington and visiting vineyards in Comox.
    Heading to northern Vancouver Island, we base ourselves in Port Alice and visit the nearby towns of Port McNeill, Port Hardy and Telegraph Cove. For separate day trips, we take the ferry to Malcolm Island where we visit the former Finnish Community of Sointula and take another ferry to Alert Bay where we have the opportunity to appreciate First Nations totem poles, artwork and museums.
    If you are thinking of doing a Canada road trip, Vancouver Island should be at the top of your list. For more information and tips on all the places we visited on Vancouver Island, you can check out this Trover list: www.trover.com...

    Wow. I lived in Port Hardy, this video didn’t do it justice. You missed some of the most unique aspects of this tourist destination. You missed the incredible sport fishing, the amazing whale and grizzly bear watching, walks on the vast sandy Stories Beach, the brilliant world renowned native carvers. Drive to the Wild West side and see the raw power of the open pacific. The diving out of Telegraph Cove or Gods Pocket Resort are among the best cold water dive spots in the world, yet not even a mention. Visit the local waterfalls and caves, Hike the famous Cape Scott trail. Visit Ronnings Gardens, a historic abandoned botanical oasis in the middle of a ancient rain forest.
    You missed so so much.

    • @samuelandaudrey
      @samuelandaudrey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We completely agree with you, Ron. Trying to see Port Hardy, Port McNeill, and Telegraph Cove in one day was too much to fully experience each destination. If we could do it over again, we'd allot a few days in each destination in order to do some of the tours. We also didn't realize that grizzly tours and whale watching tours sell out weeks in advance, so we really should have pre-booked because we missed out on that too. Hopefully we'll be able to return to the island in the future.

    You guys actually found the second largest burl, not the largest. The largest one is in Port McNeill.
    When you drive down Campbell Way (the main road coming in from the highway) follow it to the end. Take the left, heading towards the museum. Stay on that road, going over a small bridge. Its on the left, tucked to the side near the parking lot of the Community hall/ ball field. Its a short walk from the water front. Its about 6 meters larger than the one you found I believe. Once it was demoted to second largest, it actually placed near one of our main logging companies offices, thus why its off of a logging road. Still pretty cool, just not as impressive as the one in town.

    • @samuelandaudrey
      @samuelandaudrey  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Chelsie! Well, I did grow up on Vancouver Island so part of the ideas were based on what I knew from living there and places I hadn't yet visited. We decided on spending more time up north which is more remote. When we did more research we found out more about smaller places I didn't even know about. So the trip kind of evolved from a rough idea and research to add in the gaps.

    Ok so how many MVA of power those wind mills can generate? I'm surprised BC Hydro did not capitalize on the remote community power supply. I was at VIT Kelly (near Duncan) which is probably a central hub of power supply from the main land through marine DC cables... wonder why they never built TL to Port Hardy. Hmmm....

    There is another burl claiming to be the worlds largest also in Port McNeil. It is much better presented, this one has been encased in fiber glass and looks kind of phoney. Both claim to be the largest, hard to say which one is, they look pretty similar.

      @@samuelandaudrey Acá les dejo un viaje, son más de 10 capítulos que hablan del Canadiense, el tren que une Vancouver y Toronto, las costumbres de la gente de los pueblitos, etc. Tuve la suerte de hacer ese viaje, es impresionante. Ya estuve dos veces, volví apenas tuve la oportunidad y estoy pensando un tercer viaje, me gustan los videos de Yukon y Nueva Escocia. Hagan un video sobre la aurora boreal, los mejores lugares para ir a verla, cuánto cuestan los hoteles, se puede llegar en tren?? Hay que ir en avión? y todas esas cosas que hay que saber. Graciassss!! The Canadian train :) :) -> th-cam.com/video/4hQ6xT0jDFA/w-d-xo.html

    Love your channel, but too many ads!

      Thanks but complaining about that indicates you don't really care much about the creator's ability to put food on the table and pay bills.

      @@samuelandaudrey That's not a fair response; I have no issues with you making a living being a TH-camr. Just place your ads at the beginning and at the end, like many other videos. I like watching your videos and, therefore, I don't like to be interrupted with several ads in between. That's all.

      Thanks for enjoying our videos but to be honest we're not in a position financially to only place ads at the beginning and the end of videos. For every video we put out it can take anywhere from 5 to 20 hours of filming + editing. Maybe massive channels can do that and still make enough money but we do need ads every 5-6 minutes to make ends meet. If you'd like an ad-free experience on YT there is the option of paying for premium in which case you'd have none for every video you watch: th-cam.com/users/premium

      @@samuelandaudrey Thank you for explaining the difference in ad placement, I didn't realise that you receive more ad revenue by placing the ads within the video. I can appreciate the reason why you do it and understand completely. I take back my original comment. ;)

      @@adaswedentr Port Hardy has a Mean Annual Temperature of 8º and annual Precipitation of 1766mm. It rains almost everyday, (even in summer) and the summers are super short.
      If Port Hardy is such a great place, why is there under 4,000 people living there?
      If you are trying to escape a drought or a heat spell it would be good for about a week in the peak of summer as a tourist.
      Of course there's always the exception. If you like cold dark rainy environments you might like it.
