  • Join me for this magical / long journey north! We leave Port Hardy at the North of Vancouver Island and cruise overnight to Prince Rupert, near Alaska.

Amazing! Thank you for sharing your trip. What time of the year were you travelling at the time? I wonder what’s the best time to do so.

I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Japanese-American. Since 2012, Vancouver BC has been my favorite place to visit. I would visit Victoria more often, if I didn't have to take long ferries, and wait in long ferry lines. Since 2007, I have wanted to drive from Prince Rupert to Prince George, and back down to Vancouver. I discovered this Inside Passage ferry ride before the pandemic! What seems cool, is that it includes a bedroom, shower, and sink, where I can take naps! I have only ONE flaw as a human being, but it's a big one: I'm not a dog person. I hear that dogs are allowed on certain decks. Did you deal with dogs, when you took this ferry? I'm afraid that I'm going to waste a lot of this trip SLEEPING! If I lie down on the bed, I'm going to zonk out!!

I took this trip. It was a wonderful experience. The vessel was clean, comfortable and crewed by a very congenial staff. Prine Rupert is sure a great stop for a visit if you do it during the nice weather periods. I wish I could do it again.

I took that trip twice in the 1990's on the Queen of the North. I haven't been on that route since that ferry sank.

Because of the wind, I don't think anything could hear your voice while you were onboard! I made this trip in the opposite direction many years ago. My friend and I drove all the way from Lake Tahoe to glacier national Park for the Huckleberry festival. From there we crossed over into Canada through the Canadian side of the national Park, then up through Banff and Jasper on the Icefields highway. From there we drove slightly west to hit the highway and went north to Prince George where we shop for a bite to eat, then continued all the way to Prince Rupert. I got some good shots of wildlife on the way including a close-up of bears eating the local berries which kind of freaked out everybody else because I got out of the car and walked all the way over to within 10 ft of them. However, they weren't interested in me at the time so we continued on to Prince Rupert where we boarded the ferry bound for Vancouver Island, where we disembarked and drove the highway all the way to the southern end where we reboarded the ferry and got off at Port Hardy, before continuing our drive back to Lake Tahoe. My friend Chip spent most of the time sleeping in the upper decks sheltered area, but I walked around the top decks and watched dolphins playing, whales galore breaching and the magnificent totem poles everywhere in each cove we passed! There's one spot in the inland passage that is only a quarter mile wide but nearly a mile deep and the whole way along the inland passage The forest seems to rise all the way from the water to the top of the peaks. It was the experience of a lifetime and, unfortunately, I lost all the pictures that I took a few years later because they were stored at my father's place when the Carson River flooded and everything turned to mush in the storage room!

Wow - didn't realise you could do this trip on a ferry and not a huge cruise ship!! :) That's got my brain doing overtime now!!! :)

@@2meTravel Definitely. The "Rocky mountaineer and Alaskan cruise" expensive out-of-reach holiday is now turning into "Spend some time in Banff with a car, and then Vancouver with a car, and catch a ferry like you did... plus the Alaskan ferry to go further up" :) I shall definitely be in touch when it starts becoming more than a dream :)

Prince Rupert resident here. Went to Portugal a few years ago. They brag about 300 days of sun per year. I said we get the other 65.

It pisses me off that the cruise companies call it the Alaskan cruise when much of the most beautiful scenery is in BC waters.
