Awesome video! Wow, I am a thirty year veteran of the service industry and I would have had a hell of a time with this if not for your very clear tutorial, very well done. I would caution those who are not techies to be careful of those ribbon connectors, the ones that flip up. They are fragile and if you break it your screwed. Thanks for the great post.
Thanks for this video! Some tips for others doing this: If you're careful you don't need to remove the large keyboard ribbon cable, it's tricky to reattach so I suggest not removing it. Among the 12 screws some of them have different lengths, so I recommend laying them out on a table as you remove them so you can remember which screw goes where. When removing the ribbon cables that run over the HDD, you only need to disconnect them on the right hand side and then you can hold them out of the way while removing the drive.
Thanks for that... saved my life...had to take an Eee apart after wife spilled coffee on hers...PC stopped! Quick application of hair dryer saved the day....!!!!
Outstanding video, very clear and precise . . . coulda really screwed this up despite being a geek and PC builder (age 69). Just switched out another ASUS netbook's Windows XP for a fresh install of Windows 7 - very impressed with the results. These netbooks are what they are, i.e., not rocket ships but their long battery life makes them excellent grabs for waits at the doctor, etc.
I had the same problem. Tried several suggestions and finally bought 'Apricorn SATA Wire Notebook Hard Drive Upgrade Kit' for under $20 from Amazon and it cloned the old drive exactly before exchanging. All passwords, emails and programs came across perfectly. The only difference was that the netbook ran MUCH faster!
Breathed some new life into an old but still useful and usable machine thanks. Also tested my tech skills - especially with ribbon connectors, which were entirely new to me and took a bit of careful fiddling.
thx very useful. Just two add on: first two screws inside are a bit shorter while there are two marked on the plastic with M2xL6 which a bit longer. Separate them and remember for reassembling. One thing not clear to me was that you have to lift up the dark plastic of each female flat socket in order to make the flat cable released form the socket. With the exception of the first socket where you have to slide the dark plastick!
I think you are talking about the retention clip for the keyboard ribbon cable no? If you then I can do a quick video on how to improvise if you do not have another clip. hanks for watching.
thanks man, used this guide to upgrade my mothers lappy with a 120gb ssd, cloned it through usb before opening the thing, worked like a charm and super fast :D
Its a shame the computer has 1GB ram soldered with not upgrade ports, and with the IGP taking 250MB or ram for video (which cant be configured) the computer still feels slugish on certain situations due to the low ram. At least her files are much more secure due to no mechanical failure (we do backups) and with the benefit of the sdd where it can help (seek times, etc)
Very good tutorial, but the video skips around 4:36 and misses a vital bit of information! You have to remove the yellow sticker that has a warranty void warning . This exposes a 13th screw which has to be removed. A few seconds later on the video it zooms in to show the label broken. Other than that, it is very helpful. Thank you!!
It is possible. Just remove the drive and place it in a usb external hard drive enclosure. You should be able to get your files that way. Thanks for watching.
awesome video. apart from putting 12 screws again and battery cover's 4 screws ... I sucessfully upgraded its 250 GB hdd with another 500 GB hdd. Not only that The keyboard started working again. your video saves me the new cost of asus eeepc 1510 keyboard, repairing charges and again replacement charges for that 500GB hdd. chears!!!
and ribbon connectors :: first of all didnt understand your video or what to do bcz all I was doing was dettaching the cables from mainboard. but at the time of attaching I got the problem. then suddenly and U dont know how but that black thing pops up and everything got clear.
Can you tell me how to get info about when a hdd first switched on and how much time a hdd continiously ran before in one go.? Is there any software for that? Today I saw a brand seal hdd that showing its uptime 19433 hrs but it switched on only 27 times, I know its old but how to proove that to vender (store) Do you understanding my point?
Thanks a lot for this great manual. Didn't find one for the r011px first, but this one is all the same. Thought I do it on my one but with this video it was much easier. Had to remove the harddisk from my mothers eee pc to rescue data. Probably motherboard broken.
Andrew, you need to load the windows iso. I would connect a usb dvd drive and boot to a windows disk that way. You can also install windows with a usb thumb drive.
Wow that sure brought back some memories. On a side note though; there are two metal strips on each side of the hdd that function as a hard-drive caddy. You need to unscrew those and replace 'em on the new ssd.
hi !!! my ASUS eeee pc 1015px netbook , they broken plastic clips for the band connect to the keyboard . could you tell me how to fix it , thank for your help
I sure wish as part of replacing the hard drive you would have shown or explained how to install a new OS since the old OS left when you removed the hard drive.
TimsComputerRepair Thank Tims but really what I'm looking for is an answer for what my EEE is telling me. When I turn it on I get message " Reboot and select proper boot device or Insert boot Media in selected boot device and press any key? I have no idea what this means or what its tell me to do. grateful fo any help you can provide.
hi!!! i have asus pc 1015px , when i am open pc , i broke ... could you click my pictures and let me know how to replace , and what direction for clip roben band , thank for your help !!
Very useful , thanks man from Asuncion, Paraguay, South America, I need to do a backup of the hard drive, but outside the EeePC, so this video was so useful, especially for the "pressure points".... Just a little comment about there are just 10 screws to remove... you remove 2 more... i think the screw 1 and 2 can stay in they places... lol.. is nothing but again THANKS!
thanks that cool n easy ..!! as it comes with 250gb hd whats the maximum capacity it can have im thinking to change my 250 hd with 500 gb hd . will it gonna support 500gb hd?
Hey, my EEE PC won't power on. I took out the battery and pressed the power button for about a minute and tried again. Power won't turn on. There's apiece of Crucial RAM on the bottom, but I don't know to take it out. Do you have a solution to why the power won't turn on?
Lianna Wright Test your power adapter. Start pulling components off of the motherboard till you find the culprit or determine that you motherboard is the issue. Thanks for watching.
After doing this, it said no boot device selected or something like that. I Installed an ADATA SSD harddrive. Do you know if maybe it's not possible to switch the preinstalled harddrive to an ADATA one?
I found the problem. I attached the SSD to an other PC and installed windows 7. Didn't realise that when I'd take the SSD and put it into my netbook it wouldn't work. So I made a bootable USB real quick and installed windows 7 again. Worked perfectly :)
+Dale Whitmore Check to see which start up programs are using your system resources through task manager and disable them. Use a light anti virus such as BitDefender.
+TimsComputerRepair I have used task manager while scaning with spybot today and it used %45 and windows svch or somthing was using %35 others were very low usage. sorry im not sure exactly which program but it was very similar but i suspended it and lost my desktop and had only task manager windows lol. Is there a keyboard shortcut for restart also? Thanks for replying.
awesome video it helped me 12 years later

Installing windows on my new drive way faster than I thought I would be! The only problem I had was figuring out the ribbon cable connectors.

After doing this, it said no boot device selected or something like that.
I Installed an ADATA SSD harddrive. Do you know if maybe it's not possible to switch the preinstalled harddrive to an ADATA one?
Lennert Delbaere You should be able to. Was it a blank ssd? Go into the BIOS and see if the drive is listed there. Format with a Windows ISO
I found the problem.
I attached the SSD to an other PC and installed windows 7.
Didn't realise that when I'd take the SSD and put it into my netbook it wouldn't work.
So I made a bootable USB real quick and installed windows 7 again.
Worked perfectly :)
Lennert Delbaere Great! Glad you got it figured out.
Thank you so much
