Stunning Abandoned Southern Farm House Left Forgotten For Decades

- This historic old house was built in the early 1900’s. Listed as being built between 1908-1911.
The original family who built the house were most likely formerly enslaved as well because the census records list the first owner and most likely builder as being around 50 years old and of African American descent. It gets more interesting as later census records list the family as being white but still same last name. Which lead me to believe the family was most likely of mixed race. Which was pretty uncommon for the early 1900’s in the Jim Crow laws of the south.
Also interesting is the house remained in the same family for its whole life until the final owner, an elderly widow with no children passed away. Sadly with no one too leave the house to, it has sat empty for decades now in a rural area of Georgia. Absolutely beautiful house with original walls and the incredible front porch! Loved this place and I hope someday it can be saved and lived in again! It’s a wonderful property with large cedars growing all around most likely planted when the house was first built and the house is tucked away behind massive Spanish moss covered trees. Overall there isn't roof leaks or falling apart areas. Just people throwing clothes everywhere. It's a nice place.

The upstairs porch was a sleeping porch. In the days before insulation and AC, the house got pretty hot in the summers so people would sleep outside where they could catch a breeze. My mother remembered in the 1930’s, people would drag mattresses into the front yard to sleep.
I was just gonna ask that what did they do back in the day because clearly the house had no AC at any point?
@@ElWrayExplores I read about the people who lived in the tenements in New York City around 1900. They'd sleep on the fire escapes. For a real treat, they'd go to Central Park and sleep on blankets on the ground to try to get a little air. Thousands of people desperate for sleep and wanting to escape their overly hot, cold-water walk-ups. People with pillows and alarm clocks scattered around in the dark on blankets. Women in nightgowns and men in pajamas. Children, too... Men were gentlemanly and averted their eyes from the ladies wearing sleeping clothes. People have always just been people. Trying to get through the day and live their lives.
Those sheaves of wheat still hanging in the barn says it all: they may have been simple but they were self-sufficient. All those glass jars (not toxic plastic!) once stored a harvest that would keep the family fed over the winter. An honest house built to be lived in versus an ornament to display the family's assumed gentility, demanding constant upkeep. What I'd do to have a useful kitchen like that one! A lost gem hidden amidst grand trees that defy 'Time.' Beautiful story, this house. TY, Kappy!
Dang you must have a eye for detail.Your exactly right about their apparent self-sufficiency.And yes the use of plastic mainly being a cost-cutting measure for most corporations that use it at the expense of human health is rather benign as well.Good eye on your behalf..

I remember helping my Grandma dump canned fruit, and vegetables that had gone bad.
In her basement, they smelled horrible. But they had gone through WW1, and the Great Depression.
Along with their husbands being overseas, then their sons in WW11.
So, I had 🤭 to help clean and save the jars, box and return them to the basement shelves.
DAMN! I was a child...for some reason or another, my Grandparents nor Parents.
Had ever heard of child labour laws. 😹

My next to the oldest Sister participated in the First Earth Day.
She was 8 years older than me, I remember her doing it in HS when I was between 2nd and 3rd grade.
People really cared and tried, no one seems concerned in the least these days.

This house is proof that just because something is built simple doesn’t mean it’s cheap. This house has been abandoned for many years. The roof is still in good shape, because I seen no evidence of rot on the inside of the house, it has been very well maintained over the years. Shame to see it ransacked, but at least it wasn’t vandalized. Another great find Kappy!

Old growth timber was MUCH stronger and longer lasting than the fast grown timber we used today. Might also explain why additions to old houses are the first things to deteriorate.

No, this wasn’t one of the many grand mansions we usually see, Kappy. However, it’s easy to see this was built with something more beautiful than teak wood or gold. It was built with love!

Loved this house! I can just imagine pulling my mattress out on the second story porch and sleeping there.
Those big windows make the house so bright and welcoming. The lot that it's sitting on is also beautiful with the majestic trees and the stream flowing through it (I'm assuming it's part of the property). It's good to see that vandals haven't damaged the house.

This wasn't built for prestige. It was built with all the necessary features, and built to last. They very well could have been share croppers, but had their own food crops. The house itself still looks livable. I would love nothing better than to fix it and live in it. And getting the history of the place is a great story to go with it. Another great video Mr Kappy! Once again it goes to show how metal roofs help preserve a place . No cave ins or water damage . Someone could fix this up and have their own country hideaway.

I would love to live in this truly pretty house, loved all the wood and the design was just lovely. Such a shame there's no-one to take it on. I just wish folk wouldn't pull everything out of the cupboards it's so unnecessary. I think the owners were indeed proud of their home.

Well, I love the entrance to this house. Just beautiful. Then they put green 70's carpet on the stairs....lol. I love the white plank board walls. so cool. Looks like squatters have been through. I love those six pane windows and wavy glass. This a sweet little house. Thanks for sharing Kappy.
The history is biggest part of theses old homes. The story is incomplete without at least little history. I'll never unsubscribe! The handful of other channels I've watch are good, but I feel this channel is the best. There is something very Genuine about you. Im guessing like myself, you probably wouldn't of minded if you were born 100 or more years ago. Lol

I was wondering if you seen any steps to an attic? And those mantels in the upstairs bedrooms, were they covering fireplaces? They would make nice headboards for beds. I really like the screened in back porch area, nice layout. Great find Kappy 👍

As a genealogist, I loved that you found the house on a census. House histories are an interesting branch of genealogy. Also, I believe that second kitchen was indeed a summer kitchen at one time separate from the main house. The outbuilding with the jars possibly a corn crib. If you ever need help researching a house I’m your girl!

So many beautiful abandoned houses in the area . I hope one or two of them is for sale . They're all worth saving .
That tree in your opening shot was spectacular! For such a relatively small house, I bet it had beautiful curb appeal in its day.
You know what I like best about your videos? You research. You give us insight into who used to live in the house, which makes it more personal. Beadboard was on the walls, I think that is shiplap on the ceiling. I'm talking about the 1st room. Looks like some remodling had been done because the ceiling boards were mismatched a little toward the entrance. I really liked that home. Love all the wood.

My first thought was I’d like to see the beautiful wood floors under the stanky carpet! The carpet was an “upgrade” people added in probably the 1960s. My mom grew up in the Depression and thought shag carpet was the be-all, end-all in the 60s/70s. LOL

I love this house! And I love the fact that it’s still solid and not falling apart! It’s amazing! This is silly but one of the things I love about it are the curtains! It make it all homey and inviting! I could easily lay down on one I’d those beds and take a nap! And that upstairs porch, screened in would be a super sleeping porch! Good find Kappy! ❤

Wow. There was so much I loved about this one. Simple yet elegant and cozy. Looks completely worth saving. Sad that it was just left with nobody to take it over or sell it. Thank goodness for the metal roof. I could totally see myself fixing it up and making it a home again.

This house has lots of possibilities. But it would cost about $225,000 - 300, 000 maybe more. For full restoration to look original

Apparently, I cancelled myself out. I nearly tuned out over the shag carpet, but I loved the simplicity of the construction throughout the house, the walls, the doors, the fireplace mantels. I also loved that there was no graffiti or vandalism, at least none that I could see and I hope you rescued the bird. Keep up the good work!
During the time period that people were putting shag carpet into their homes, it was considered a very pricey upgrade. Most people liked having it, because it made the house warmer and they thought it made it look more modern.

That back “kitchen” was likely the canning kitchen. Used to can the harvests without heating up the house in the hot summers.

This is an amazing place. Glad you were able to preserve this in video. The doors weren’t sagging lot of paint peeling but for the age it would be an easy fixer upper. Miss those simpler times and where people took pride in their work and things were made to last. It’s in better shape than a lot those built today. Thank you and be safe 😊
I loved the tree at the start of the video. If you truly like this place a lot, you could check with the county. You might be able to get it for next to nothing. It seems solid still. It would require a good deal of work, especially the electrical. I'm sure that the original families would like it to be occupied again.

Kappy, you do know how to sell a house! After reading your description, I can barely contain my curiosity about this house. I just know there's a wonderful story cradled within these walls!
Oh, I love it already, with the balcony surrounded, but not supported, by those pillars. Oh, you like that, too! Imagine us liking the same thing! What a graceful design! The little touches, such as the diamond-shaped attic vent plate and sawtooth trim work echoing its angle is simple, but pretty!
The last occupant likely lived downstairs.
Kappy, you may not be aware that in the early 1800s and up until relatively recent times, lighter complected Black people "passed" as white, for the obvious reasons of economic and social advantages not afforded to their darker skinned relatives.
That looks like a Carolina Wren. They find their way into all sorts of places, looking for safe nesting spots. One made a nest in my Daddy's hat once when he left it hanging on the porch for a couple days. It will go out the way it came in, most likely.

Yes, Kappy, I totally agree that someone's pride of ownership shines through in the modestly beautiful design of this house and in all the little special touches that raise it above its peers. It stands where others have failed and I'm sure the owners would have been proud to see it still standing.
Even the outbuildings have survived, a real anomaly in the southern climate. There must not be any kudzu around!😂
