Huston House at Butler Plantation, Butler Island, Ga.
Consructed in 1927 by Colonel T.L.Huston, a former co-owner of the New York Yankees. Butler Island was a former rice plantation in the late 1700's.
After Col. Huston died in 1938, the property was bought by R.J. Reynolds Jr. (tobacco Reynolds).
The parcel is currently owned by the Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Division of Ga.
No plans have been made for the house at this time.

Hi! I actually live in the town this plantation is in. I was actually just there at this actual property last week. Most of the people of this area are very respectful of the deep history of our area and leave this plantation area alone. It has been very rainy here lately and getting down that drive was a bit scary. But our area is just so quiet and beautiful!

The thing in the kitchen was how the family would call the servants to their individual rooms. Kind of an old fashioned intercom system circa 1800’s - early 1900’s.
Yup. We had one of those in my Victorian (mid 1800s) house in Boston area growing up that used to be a boarding house. Those square decals inside box would say things like 2nd floor BR, or 3rd floor Bath, etc which would indicate to kitchen staff who was paging them.

The site might be historic but that house dates to the early 20th century. That still makes it old (roughly 100 years) but it certainly isn't a plantation house in the sense that it predates the Civil War.
Antebellum homes in Georgia are rare because of Sherman.

This home is incredible! I love how respectful you are of the property.....very quiet, almost like it’s a funeral home or something. I’m just blown away by what good shape it’s in. Some rooms and the staircase looks like they’re coming home in awhile. The wood throughout is gorgeous!

What an amazing home and full of character. It’s such a shame that no one has bought and restored it.
When you were in the wood panelled room I couldn’t help but wonder if it had any secret passage ways lol. Also a lot of those older homes had two basements. The first for servants ( cook, maids and butler)worked during the day, the main kitchen would be on that level. Then there would be a lower basement, used to store wine and foods such as root vegetables, perishables and preserves. It would have been the coldest area in the house.

You bring up an interesting point about older homes having two basements. While she was walking around the basement it sounded to me like she was walking on a wooden floor with open space below, by the way it sounded hollow under that wood floor. In addition I was under the impression that these old antebellum plantation homes had large fireplaces in the basement for cooking and I didn't see any fireplace in that basement or a place that looked like there might have been a fireplace there. As for "secret passages" I was trying to keep track of wall thicknesses and etc. while she was going room to room to see if there might be a space for a hidden passage but it was hard to do with her walking around the way that she did. That said, I don't believe there is a secret passage, but I do believe there might have been another floor or basement under the one she was in.

I’m fascinated by old houses and love exploring them over here in Scotland.
I’ve seen one where there were secret passages (well not so secret, but hidden from general view) that the servants used so that they weren’t seen by the family or visitors in the main passageways carrying food, linen, cleaning materials etc.
It’s a shame so many of these old houses are lying empty and uncared for.
They were once homes where people were born, lived, loved and died.

@@alphaone101 Back in that era, most large plantation homes had separate 'Cook Houses'... This was done because of the open fire heat, and danger to the main house....

Y'all really need to stop focusing on the bad your ancesters went through and focus on the beauty of that house. Focus on the freedom they received. You are barely related to those slaves. You most likely have little of their blood in your veins.

Just to clarify a couple of things, those small doors that you thought were dumbwaiters were actually laundry chutes, that's why they all went to the one room in the basement, and that room with all the piping and areas you could see where something had been sitting for some time that you thought was a bathroom went along with the smell you mentioned. All the piping and the areas where stuff had been sitting was for the boiler room that provided steam for those radiators that were in almost every room, and the smell wasn't gasoline, it was either stove oil or kerosene but my bet would be stove oil, in fact there was probably a tank just outside that room, or one of the things that had been taking up space in that room could have been where the tank had been sitting. And it is a beautiful old home but the construction points more to the first part of the twentieth century, not to the civil war era. Not staying that there may have been another home that was much older on the property that this one replaced. That would be something you might check into, the state could/should be able to give you just about any information you're interested in then you could post an update, even if there is or isn't an old family cemetery on the property somewhere.

@Delton Streetman. Yes. I thought the house looked much younger than Antebellum Era home. I also think it's a laundry chute. It's much too small for a dumbwaiter. Dumbwaiters need to be big enough to put an entire tray of food on them. These are about the size of regular late 19th early 20th century laundry chutes. Also, the bathrooms look too good. They were obviously put in place when the house was built. Antebellum homes didn't have bathrooms. Many late 19th early 20th century houses built by people with money did have bathrooms. (Heck, we had an early 20th century Sears house in the 1980s that had a bathroom built in. Solid middle class, there. It had those tiny little closets, too. People usually hung their clothes on hooks, hangers came later. Ladies had large drawers for their gowns. Hanging gowns up tear the fibers. They are better put lying down. Most Frank Lloyd Wright houses have these Gown Drawers in the Ladies Dressing Rooms.)
It does have some creepy vibes. Perhaps this house was built on the site of an older Antebellum house.

It was last used as offices by the nature conservancy. The property was used as a rice plantation starting in the 1790's. All the original buildings are no longer standing. The house which now stands was built in 1927.

I did some digging and found out the property is owned by the department of natural resources wildlife division. The grounds are open to the public for walks, picnics and fishing. The buildings are closed to the public. Not sure why they aren't padlocked. Would love to see the house serve as a venue for weddings or other events.

After doing further research: This is the Houston House built in 1926 on the butler plantations land. You can read the history of this place at the Daily Mail.
The first “little door” on the wall, looks like a laundry Shute to drop down linens to the laundry, probably in 5he basement.

Same. I wouldn't be worried by the spirits if their presence remained in the home, as long as they didn't hurt me or my family. I am protected by the spirit of the Lord. I believe there are spirits all around us, not just in old houses. They can't hurt you if the devil isn't already in your life. This house is beautiful. I'm a native Texan but I live in Nevada now, so I've seen old plantation homes with slave quarters and old West saloons and ghost towns. America is filled with fascinating history, old buildings, and relics. My bucket list includes exploring more of America's historical beauty and eventually explore abroad.

Judging from the decal of the Georgia game/fish warden on the doors upstairs, I'm going to to say this house is probably owned by the state. It was probably willed to the state for preservation purposes then used as office space, and then left abandoned when new offices were built. If that is the case, then the state of Georgia should be ashamed about how they are letting this gorgeous piece of their own history simply rot away. There must be something they could do with it. Perhaps corporate retreat space, a childrens home, interactive antebellum museum, a school for architecture or design.. how many possibilities could there be? One thing is for sure, it is very sad that the wishes of the owner of this property who willed it to the state, probably out of love for the house and out of a want to have it preserved, are not being respected. The state should keep up its part of the bargain and show some respect for what is probably a very rare piece of their heritage.

Kristopher Johnson ‘I think if it were owned by state there would be more postings upon entering and on the property. That sticker looks like it was just slapped up there, not a posting by the state.
It's all about bucks, kid. That and resources......usually locals do restoration campaigns to save old buildings like this.....if it's super rural, nobody will do anything. Possibly, something is in the works.....who knows? I saw a place like this in my hometown take years before it was turned into something.

White Witch I'd put down plush carpeting through out the home and remodel the green bathroom and strip the white paint off the hallway and also I'd put solid oak paneling on the walls through out the house.

Usually with squatters they leave trash & personal stuff behind & don't clean up after themselves so I don't think there were any in this house

This home should be offered on the back page of "This Old House" many, many readers would renovate and restore this home to its former glory. Personally, I have saved and restored four Victorians, and I would love to save this one as well. The house is in near immaculate condition, and I would relish the idea of living there. If available for sale, I would relocate in a heartbeat ..... I love Georgia! My husband is from the South and so is all his family members.
Good lord I hope she answers you! I'd love to see the beauty saved! What a great Bed & Breakfest place this would make, or an artists retreat for Plein air paint of the Georgia area!!!

I've been in plantation homes in Natchez, MS and in Louisiana and those homes looked much older than this house without a doubt. The story about Natchez is that the people there knew that Sherman had burnt down every town and plantation home in the south as he made his way across the South (I'm a Southerner and we always capitalize that word when it applies to our geographical location :), so they made nice with Sherman offered him money and who knows what else and he decided not to burn Natchez and so it still has more plantation homes than any other state in the Confederacy (of course the land is no longer available). When I was there, Natchez still had more than 50 plantation homes still standing but the ravages of time has still done a good deal of damage on those even with the spring and fall festivals they have every year to keep the maintenance up on those old places. They are beautiful no doubt as are the remaining ones in LA. but those were true plantation owned homes with slaves tilling the land, some being just the town homes of the rich democrats who owned them and the actual big plantation home was out in the country. After the Civil War, many of them fell in to carpetbagger shape if you get my drift and they've been bought and sold many times over the last 155 years. There was only one where the original family (2 sisters) still owned their family's home and of course many generations though by the looks of them not too many generations. Its been many years since I've been there and I'm sure those two sisters have been long gone (sorry for the history lesson). I will assure you, though this indeed is a beautiful old home, and the original owners were quite wealthy doing well in the cattle business apparently, but I doubt seriously that it is of the Civil War era and you can't really call it a plantation home if it never was. I guess to be convinced, I'd have to see the documentation about when the house was built. All she needs to do is say it is a plantation type house or it was a plantation house but they never owned slaves. It is gorgeous to be sure and I love it and whoever owned it over the years has done a good job keeping it up but it still needs a bit of a makeover (for sure in the kitchen). One of the things about those homes from Natchez is that many times the kitchen was detached from the home to keep the house from burning down. I loved the big balcony on the second floor and the glass doorknobs. If I were to guess I'd say the home was built in the early 20th century but not before the Civil War. There is a gigantic difference in the way this home looked when compared to known plantation homes in Natchez. Mind you, I am not calling our hostess a liar. I for sure do not want to make anyone mad but I just don't think this house is that old and made it through the Civil War without Sherman burning it. What do you all think?
You are correct. Someone had posted the property's history. I am very interested in plantation homes (pre-Civil War). The Planter's lives in pre-war and reconstruction is an American tragedy. History of that era is not portrayed in its entirety, and oftentimes, told by bias historians.
I love the South, and the uncomplicated Southern lifestyle.
Laura, can you please suggest Planter's homes that have survived which are not well known tourist attractions?
@@jami3324 I'm sorry but I cannot. The homes I mentioned are only opened during the spring and fall festival times as are the ones in Louisiana. The tours are worth it and there are a few of those homes that will let you do bed and breakfast. The tours are very interesting because they give you the history of the home. Many were used for hospitals during the Civil War.

Hi Laura, it makes me angry too. Most people don't understand the full history that led up to the Civil War.
The Southern States, 'cotton king' States were America's largest and most profitable industry. There were only 2 sea ports which were available to the Plantars, to export their goods to Europe: New York and Louisiana.
The NY's were the middleman. They wanted a larger role (politics), and profits. The Southerners rejected their demands.
As retribution, the NY's used the anti-slavery minority groups to put pressure on the Plantars, as a leverage to gain profit.
In an effort to quell the growing sentiment of anti-slavery, President Lincoln offered slaves a new home in Panama. It was an abandoned plan, because there was no interest.
I argue, slavery was not the direct result of the Civil War, rather, it was the outcome.
Economics, trade, tariffs and demographics began the disputes which lead to war.
Looks like a vintage house, but not a plantation as we know it.

The people that deny the wrongs committed on these plantations wear face protection, too, BWAHAHAHAHAHA!, but seriously, I support the restoration and maintenance of the structures themselves. At this point, they're too nice to allow them to go to seed, regardless of the awful ideals held by the original occupants.

They have those newer heating/ac units in this house that are attached to an outside wall. I love the natural wood walls and ceilings on the third floor. Hmmmm no heating system for the radiators.....

This is a gorgeous house! Looks like it just needs some cleaning and TLC, which someone should get to ASAP before it gets too bad. I always think of all the people out there, myself included, who need a nice home to live in and yet there are millions of abandoned houses like this out there!

That box in the room with the sink is more then likely the call box for servants . That room would be called the scullery, or dish washing room. The box would have rung and then had a marker to tell you what room the call came from. I could be wrong.

The house looks like it has been cared for recently. The wood paneling is freshly oiled or waxed. It’s super clean for a house that old. Likely the “squatter” is slowly restoring the place. No cobwebs, no piles of ceiling fallen to the floor, cleaned windows.

The dairy barn reminds me of spending summers with grandpa on his dairy farm! Spent many hours milking loads of cows morning & then night with working the hayfields in between 7 days a week all summer long!
It was a never ending job, sunrise to sundown! It would get me in tremendous shape for football when I'd go home!

A plantation home would not have had a refrigerator and stove such as was shown in this video. Cabinets look too modern to me.

people lived in it until modern times. She never said it was like it was in the 1800s. The kitchen would have been behind the house in a separate building if its gonna be 100% like the plantation days.
Some features like the milk door and the air vent were upgrades probably from the 1940s. The milk doors became popular earlier. Idk exactly when. It also has electricity and not gas lights or just candles. It's sooo beautiful. Sad to see it on disrepair...it also saddens me to know that the home was built on the back of slaves. Such a beautiful building with terrible beginnings. ...

Butler Plantation is an awesome place! I only live 4 miles from there. The rice fields are still visible from the interstate. They had levees along the fresh water side to irrigate the rice. The waters arround are brackish mix of salt water. As the tide was going out, fresh water would flow in using the water gates. When the tide changed, salt water would infiltrate the river and they would shut the gates. Living in South Georgia has its perks. Next time yall come down give me shout out...
Alone challenge in the basement - funny how I knew you were thinking that! Who wouldn't?! Possibly haunted plantation at night in such wonderful shape - that's like PERFECT! Such a gorgeous find! And so wonderful goons haven't trashed it! I was thinking that was dust on the floor but if it seemed more like flour, how crazy about the footprints!
Truly ashamed it is in such disrepair. It is full of mold so that maybe the reason they left. It doesn’t look like it needs much done to live in. Very cool. Thank you for sharing.

Yeah when you go into a house and see foot or cat's paws print. It is definitely haunted. I have experienced it before. That house just give me the creeps.

This is such an amazing and majestic piece of history. Something must be done to ensure that this gorgeous home is not left to rot. The thought of that happening is completely heartbreaking. What I wouldn't give to be able to afford to purchase this home for myself.

It looks like it was updated in the 1920's or 30's. The woodwork is amazing. To bad it's abandoned. It would be so fun to restore it and bring it back. Thanks for sharing.
What an incredibly beautiful manor house! It wouldn't take much to make it pristine again and hopefully someone will once again occupy this magnificent house before it tragically falls into disrepair and/or vandalism.

I love your attention to detail. The designs, and placements of doors and windows. I also love the bathroom door with a window whose design is so intricate and yet preserves the privacy of anyone using the facilities. I love lintels, door and window frames, door knobs galore and even built-in drawers and spread drawers -- love those window seats too. I wonder at the history of this building and whether or not it is for sale. I could see my husband looking and calculating on what to restore and what he can sell it for -- . I'd love to restore it and LIVE in it .

Hi Ashley! That house was incredible. I remember those glass door knobs when I was a kid. I think the 3rd floor was used as offices.Its a sin someone just left that house to rot. The woodwork was amazing and it looked like a lot of the house was in pretty good condition. Nice video.Thank you!

If I had the money, I would buy and restore this home. With it being open, I am so surprised at how immaculate it is with no sign of vandalism. The woodwork is amazing! Even the attic and basement look good. I think this place is in Georgia from the stickers on some of the windows. Absolutely LOVE this home.
I am literally going to dream about this house tonight! How I would preserve it, and try and keep it as original as possible. Beautiful!!

Historically, some very ignorant and terrible people originally occupied those homes, but the preservation of the homes isn't an endorsement of slavery or white supremacy. The houses are inanimate and shouldn't be allowed to go to seed on account of the sins of the past generations.

Antebellum houses did not have kitchens in the house, because of fear of fire, since food was cooked over the fireplace or a wood stove. The kitchen was added as were the toilets.probably in the 1920s

What a beautiful old homestead....pity it has been left to decay. Reminds me of some of the old sugar plantation houses in Barbados that are preserved now as tourist attractions. My late father and his sister, my late aunt, were born and raised on two of those old plantation houses, where their father, my grandfather was a planter, back in the 1930's.

It breaks my heart when someone purchases a house such as this and the first thing they do is gut all the rooms making it all into wide open spaces! That takes away the old original charm!! 😏😕
I totally agree, when you have a house like this you honor the original architecture you don't tear it up! There's a guy that bought a house in St Louis Missouri - the style is Second Empire. He is putting everything back the way it was in the 1800's. He said, there are plenty of old houses being modernized, let this be the one that isn't. His channel is called The Second Empire Strikes Back. It's a beautiful, beautiful house. He showed a bathtub and sink he had bought and how he got fireplace tiles back that were stolen and recovered. He just started and has like 40,000 subscribers. I'm one of them! That house is gorgeous!
This home should be restored...there are so many different decades that added their touch. Very interesting place.

the rooms upstairs are lined in cedar for clothes storage etc..cedar keeps the moths out...black mold is eating it up though

Based on the wiring she found and the relatively new bathroom fixtures, I would say it had been remodeled in the recent past.
This home has clearly been updated from its original state.
It was built in the 1920’s

I love the fact that this house at one time was probably the “LaTiDah” of the area but has linoleum floors in certain areas like my house.

It's amazing to see the wooden structure doesn't decay. But I think you need to be careful exploring such property because wooden structure has its shortcomings.
