Never choose a career because of money. I did that and tried hard to make it work. Now, I am finally pursuing my passion, MEDICINE, even though switching careers makes no sense financially. And, yes, it is frustrating to experience how difficult it is to get into medical school, while watching people leave medicine in residency, or shortly thereafter. It feels like they took a medical school seat that could have gone to someone who truly has a passion for medicine. And, yes, even when I made the decision to pursue my previous career, I knew I was doing it for the money, and not because I was passionate about it.

The answer is people who pursue medicine for the love of people and practice of medicine are not selected for medical school. The achievers are selected. People who have ambition to achieve. They don't really care, they just want to achieve, and so they do, and the medicine hierarchy actively reinforces this. I'm going into residency soon and I can say that it's probably about half of new students/docs have a legitimate love and respect for humans

That is well said, I have more love for people than anything else, and I get criticized because I don't have the same love for them as I do for humans.

How do you know those that love people and practice of medicine aren't selected for? Prove it.

Unfortunately the only way to minimalize this concept is to drop the wages and social status that accompanies the title of physician. Naturally the achievement hunters are going to work for the hard-to-achieve professions. That's the nature of this world.

In UK headlines are about pay and pensions. Less often mentioned but as important: Workload, conditions, public expectations unrelated to NHS capacity, unsupportive (hostile) management, disproportionate regulation, reforms without coalface engagement, outlook (trajectory), loss of trust with leadership, blame culture, politicisation, sense of injustice, exhaustion, fear for patient safety... every year for the last decade, 'the worse NHS crisis ever' without let up.

I had a 200K job offer to do Data engineering in healthcare, but I turned it down to go to medical school. I regret nothing. I love medicine, I hate being poor, but I couldn't imagine anything else.

I get it somewhat, but it still hurts me greatly. I don't see what is the use of this achieving thing if you don't have a passion for the thing you're trying to accomplish. Why not just start your TH-cam channel first and leave medicine alone? Seem like candidates who were probably above average couldn't make it due to these overachievers feeding their egos. I believe this social status and money piece is the reason why most of these students want to become a doctor. I say it is fine as long as you're contributing to the medical field for at least 10 years of contribution, or it is just a waste. I know what people are going to think, I'm terrible and we are this one trick pony that I put people in, but I feel if you going to contribute to society by wasting your youth on something you don't want to do then at least give it to people that want to do that occupation because they are willing to stay and contribute.

We weren’t mature enough to take a decision this big.
I was 15 when I had to make the most Important decision of my life. I mean it’s so so wrong, they don’t let you vote till you are 18 saying you are not mature enough to choose your leader but you have to choose your career at 15? WTF?
