    Nice to know what the Pont Aven is like for bikes. It's the ramps and floor in ferries you have to watch when loaded with luggage. Why they don't have more of an abrasive surface I don't know , the Manahman to the IOM is sheet steel no coating other than oil and grease from cars 😮 need to be really careful .👍

      @harrymc9263 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RiderCamTV during TT and the Manx GP the isle of man steam packet use a different system to the one you show. With so many bikes going on they set up rows of rails which basically look like longer versions of the rails you see outside saloons in western films. Bikes are parked parallel to the rail and then tied to it by a bit of 1/4 blue nylon rope with a couple of bits of foam where needed. looks as dodgy as hell but seems to work.

    Our last trip back from Santander was our last, bumpy wasnt the word!! If the person reading this was the owner of the GS1200, thanks for lifting you bike off mine and saying nothing even though the staff were going around giving people chits to claim on. I found out when i took my baglux off 3 weeks later when I was p/x'ing it only to find 2 dents in my tank from a handlebar and the brake lever, oh and it was too late to claim off Santander

    • @RiderCamTV
      @RiderCamTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      wow, thats not good at all. Ive not had an issue as yet, but your comments have made me think that before getting off the ferry, to check the bike as fuly as possible before leaving which i wil start doing now. They could stop cramming us all in like sardines which would not only help to stop this happening but also to allow us to get back to our bikes the next day as its always a nightmare!

    Not all ferry companies do it in the same manner as this one. Stena Line from Harwich to the Hook of Holland, give you the strap but there is no pad for the seat. DFDS from Newcastle are the same and its up to you to strap the bike down with both DFDS and Stena. On the DFDS ferry, we came down in the morning and all the bike had extra straps added during the crossing by the crew.

    I took my bike to Dieppe ,and they strapped it in one of those brackets that lock the front wheel and strapped it down.(fully loaded GS) after that I noticed a slight wheel wobble, after a visit to the shop they told me the front wheel was slightly buckled Spoked rims are expensive. Now I always check what sort of tie down system the ferry uses...the Pont aven is done very well

    I would recommend sticking it in gear as per your mention in video, recommend this in general anytime you stop.
    Also stick around to see it being strapped down, as I had one young guy on Stenaline trying to put metal hook end onto my frame.. no thanks pal
    Also don’t bother arming the alarm, as let’s be honest, anyone who can make a bike disappear from a ferry deserves it.
    Usually I leave my helmet on my wing mirror unless it’s gonna be a pretty rough crossing....saves you carrying it about on the ship like a woman’s handbag.

    • @RiderCamTV
      @RiderCamTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      great point about the leaving it in gear, have to admit i always leave it in gear when parked, saves the worry. I pack my helmet in my topbox with my gloves around it to protect it as like you say, it saves carrying it on the ferry and keeps it safe :)

  • @johnmacdonald1878
    @johnmacdonald1878 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I always recommend leave in gear. If not in gear they can move in rough weather. Or a rough landing.
    Always on side stand, center stands are not stable enough.
    Best to put a block opposite side stand. Best are large specifically for MC, but two car blocks one invert on top of other works ok.
    Preferably on a diagonal rather than fore and aft particularly if not strapped..
    Preferably not athwart ships,
    Straps depends on route, open water, yep. Ratchet Strap over the seat,
    Be careful on wet steel decks and on wet steel ramps.
    Wear gear when boarding, ATGATT.
    Wait until ship in dock before removing block or taking it of side stand,
    Bikes can fall over form a rough landing.

    The last time I went on a ferry (Portsmouth to Cherbourg) they strapped my R1200GS so tightly that they turned my seat into a ' banana'. Fortunately managed to manipulate it back into shape again with no long lasting issues. Next time I might be tempted to remove the seat before it is strapped down. What do you think?

    • @RiderCamTV
      @RiderCamTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      we have a had a couple of issues where they have been over amorous with the straps but on the whole (to date) not had a single issue, other than them packing us all in like sardines and then making it next to impossible to get to your bike the next day

      If strapped correctly tension, it just holds the bike against the side stand an prevents rocking back of off the side stand, Or over, only slight compression of suspensions is required,
      If strap causes damage it was way to tight.

    All of you riders planning on using the Canadian Ferries NEED to CALL the Canadian Ferry and COMPLAIN, I did many times and they are now changing the ridiculous fees they charge for motorcycles, our bikes do not take as much square footage as a car, yet they claim they charge per square footage, WELL, it should be LESS, not MORE and they range from $500 to $1,200 ONE WAY on the Canadian Ferries. The Ferry Management are receptive to bikers IF YOU CALL THEM. They are now planning to LOWER their fares for motorcycles. Most riders are avoiding the Ferries, till they lower their prices. Call their 800 number and VOICE YOUR OPINION. Thank you!

  • @javandell8020
    @javandell8020 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Okay, Thumbs up, but let us know how much they charged you, These Ferry Rides rob bikers in Canada, they charge an average of $500 to $1,000 for half day to 3 day ferry rides, not including the rider and cabin, so about $1,400 for a 3 day Ferry ride PER PERSON and that's only covers a ONE WAY trip. Ferry robbery at its best.
