Blending explained in 5 minutes | ft. The Mandalorian bust

  • In this video I am painting this Mandalorian bust to explain the best ways to blend on your miniatures. Whether you are painting warhammer miniatures or any other miniatures, blending is something that will push your miniature painting to another level.
    When I started painting warhammer, I basically just drybrushed my space marines and called it a day. I move on to mainly highlighting the edges and shading the recesses, but now, I also know how to build volume using blending on my miniatures. Blending will truly move your miniature painting to another tier - not only will you be able to paint some volume on your models, but also it is necessary to paint non metallic metal. Whatever miniature you are painting, creating some volume and depth to the miniature will certainly help it quite a bit and that is when the blending comes.
    Here I am showing you my 3 favourite ways to blend on a miniature. On this Mandalorian bust I have used stippling, wet blending and glazing. While wet blending is useful to creating some basic color gradients on the miniature, you wll find that you will need some additional layers of glazing to truly make it a smoothly blended transition. Glazing is probably the most precise blending method for your miniatures, but at the cost of your time. Stippling, on the other hand, can be quick and precise, but can damage your brushes.
    These videos are essential watch if you want to improve:
    Painting Volumes: • Secret Method to Push ...
    Painting Non Metallic Metal: • Non Metallic Metal exp...
    Surely, these are just few of the blending methods and I will cover these further in the future!
    The Mandalorian bust was printed from a file on thingiverse, unfortunately, I can not find the link, but I am sure that you will be able to find it!

      I gotta say, at the 4:15 where you have the bust with all of your tones on it before you blend, it looks really good. I might try to do some figures in this style and not worry about blending. If you are fair enough away your eyes will blend the colors for you.

    A good tip I found for wet blending, is to use a water based artists ink, that's close to your mid tone as a blending medium. It dries slower, and "bleeds" through any paint applied over it. The more coats you apply, the less it bleeds through. Giving a nice clean transition. The drawback to this method, is that once you're satisfied with the blends, it needs to be sealed before anything else can be done.

    • @Zumikito
      @Zumikito  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can do both, it depends on how rich do you want the color - if you just add white/yellow (as your highlight color) it will get desaturated, so adding some saturated midtone is nice for skintones, but not necessary for metallics

And put things like when a wash darkly stains an area you didn't want stained and you're using translucent colors like red or yellow. Very good question, I almost never use any kind of medium but the ONLY EXCEPTION would be a little bit of medium or flow improver to make drying tome longer for wet blending. I'm wondering: why is blending ALWAYS explained on a big surface, and never on a 32mm miniature... If it's not used on these, how do you achieve transitions on small miniatures?

    • @Zumikito
      @Zumikito  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I disagree, I mostly explain blending on way smaller miniatures - check my latest vid!

    Yo bro, amazing video. Looks not that hard anymore to achieve.
    WRONG!
    I watched that video probably 20-30 times already. Today i tried that blending technique on one of my Dark Souls heroes. I prepared my wet palette with the colour mixing ratios you showed in another video of yours (how to paint NMM). I have to say it did totally not work out for me. I really f*****g suck at glazing. I could not get the edges smooth at all. It was a mess and after 2h of work without results I stopped and just painted the normal non cool way with metallic colours.. damn I would love to achieve those reflections with white/grey, simply non metallic colours.
    I am rellay jelaous of your skill maestro!

    it always feels like you are rushing to fit in this idea that a concept has to be dealt with in 5m or less. Every considered giving yourself just a couple more minutes so you do not have to rush? you have so much to offer and I would love to see just a little more of your techniques in action.

      Thank you :) I really don't think that can happen, but it's funny that some people would associate regular hand gesture with some ideology haha
