You dont need them. BUT they are a great help when you just get started and have absolutly no idea how paints behave and just want your army/warband tabletop ready. (1-2-3 done)

This was so helpful!!! I've watched so many videos and this is the first time I've seen someone explain why my all over wash was failing in my minis which don't have lots of texture. You explained this so perfectly i could sniffle. Doing the lining or just along crevasses makes the mini pop like i want it to! Thank you!
Excellent work - and I'm not talking about just this vid - I like the short/straight to the point format, tight narrative and punchy storytelling, without compromises on delivering key takeaways in clear visual form. I personally can't stand a 35 min tutorial on the subtleties of wet blending for instance. what I need is a few pointers to get me to try and that's exactly what you provide without the fluff. Keep it coming and I'm sure your audience will grow fast!
These share a lot with older painting techniques when we didn't have a lot of products made for certain processes. Thanks for bringing back a lot of good solid technique talk! :)
Thank you for your continued effort to publish useful content. Even with 20 years experience in model building under my belt your videos are both educational and very entertaining. This one is certainly among the funniest. Love it! Keep them coming!
Thank you for the time you have taken to articulate this - exposure to one major presence in the mini-painting world has ingrained this “basecoat-wash-highlight” method to the point of becoming a Sacred Cow that is not to be questioned... until one has the epiphany that replicating the box art examples from this same company will never be achieved using this method alone.
Ninjon has a great video on replicating box art jsut using the colours listed on the box - it involves lots (and he means lots!) of glazing. And to be fair, even the Eavy Metal team admit that they don't just basecoat, wash, highlight when they do their work.
I really enjoy your 5 minute videos, they offer a lot of value in a short period of time and you talk at a decent enough speed that I don't wander off and get bored. Very engaging :-)
Dude, the amount of truly useful information you can put in 5 minutes, makes you one of my favorite painter youtubers. Every video I you show something so obvious, so natural, that I may have also experienced it, but I don't see other YT painters discussing this... Like the wash thing, Idk if it is clear to everyone else so it is not discussed, but to someone like me that can't find a painting community where I live to share this kind information, it is awesome. There is a lot lot of value in this work. Congratulations, sir!
Seriously, I have learned a lot from TH-cam and FB communities, but there where points that did not connected. Like, shading with wash, shading with layers, is the same? When use which one? How they compare to each other? And BANG, Zumikito has a video about that. E-VE-RY video, I end it with a epiphany about painting :D
I like to use the pens for drawing designs on my space wolves shoulder pads, I find I can get them more accurate that way. If I need them darker or have to hide the pen lines, I then use that as a template to paint over after matting them down.
I'm discovering your channel, and I really love your minis, the paint jobs are amazing! (and great tips for newbies like me are much appreciated of course!)
Hello. Another down to earth, clear and precise explication. Great. I paint in oils so dont use washes or dry brushes and shading is done easily wet on wet. But i'm an painter who started in the 90's before the acrylic boom. (yes, i'm ancient). that said i realy do enjoy watching the amazing results and techniques used by more modern (and much younger) painters than myself. All the best.
Thank you! That is such a nice comment. I have tried working with oils myself, but somehow don't feel as confident with them, might have to give it another try!
For textured species like dragons, I find that applying your shader colours before the colours you actually want it to be is much easier than using a wash. Especially if you're like me, and really enjoy doing colour gradients on their wings or belly that make applying a one-size-fits-all wash a nightmare. It does require a bit of planning beforehand, but its better than having to repaint entire sections because you misjudged, believe me
One trick I came up with was using a needle to do fine detail and get paint into recessed areas it acts like a quill and often prevents spill over also if able bend the tip to prevent gouging if you lack a fine touch hope this helps.
Black/Grey Contrast paint is also a compromise between washes and oil/enamel paints for recess shading. The contrast paint does a better job of flowing to the crevices of the model than washes. It's still not as precise/good as using an oil paint, and certainly more expensive, but it's less frustrating to use than a wash, and saves you from having to get into oil paints if you don't particularly want to.
Thanks for posting.I have been using the all over wash technique for everything with very mixed results, mostly not very good. Your video convinced me to improve and use better techniques. Looking forward to learning how to do some glazing with your videos : )
very nice tutorial, perhaps a tip use acrylic ink for washes instead of oil paint and a flow medium all can be found in regular art materials and cost far less than specialized model paints…
Do you have a video about the difference between a medium and water for thinning paints? Or about the medium in general. Because I still don't understand exactly what happens to paint when adding water (or thinner) or adding a medium.
When you use gloss varnish to prepare the surface for oil. What comes after that? Do you make another layer with matt varnish before the next acrylic layer?
Can you explain me this.. I will receive pre-shaded Heroes3 board game miniatures. Can I color them? Or it's too late? Someone mentioned I still need to prime them... Is this true?
Thank you for sharing; If we apply (1) the Gloss Varnish and then (2) Recess Shade and then (3) wish to apply Acrylic Paint, do we need to put Matt Varnish on first for the paint to adhere to? I am worried the Acrylic Paint may not adhere well to the Gloss Varnish. Your thoughts are welcomed.
I apply the matt varnish whenever I need it after the recess shading, but the most important thing is to do it before painting the metallics. If you find out that the acrylic doesn't adhere the way you want it (maybe the paint is too thin), apply it right away
Thank you! Never heard of that method actually, will have to reasearch that. But it all comes down to speed and staining the area around it, if it performs in both aspects, why not!
What do you think about full washing something like Necrons? Necrons have much smooth surface like the Space Marines. I full wash them because it takes care of the shading and makes them look less shiny and new. Your take on this?
Your minis, your style, your preference. If I wanted to keep them shiny, I would put oil wash over metallics however (no need for gloss varnish over good metallics really). If you like them a little rough and used and you like the result, sure!
