    Some non-spoilerish stuff about Suikoden for ya...
    1. You are saying the name correctly.
    2. While the games (at least all the main line games) have 108 characters for you to recruit you can pretty much stick with all the same team mates through out the game and just play with those. Each character has just about enough background and connection to the main story that it's really about who you like. Some of the 108 characters you can recruit don't even join your combat party. Some become members of your stronghold as merchants and other flavored characters to add to your story.
    2a. This will be the only spoilerish style thing I mention and it's not even really a spoiler it's more of a heads up. In order to get the true ending of the games you have to collect all 108 characters. However that isn't saying to enjoy the game you need all 108, but for the true ending you need them.
    3. Unlike Final Fantasy, The Suikoden series takes place all in the same world. However they do take place during different time periods and different locations. You can play each game without playing the previous, the only real downside is you'll lose out on some history with returning characters in certain games.
    3a. The timeline order goes Suikoden 4, Suikoden 5, Suikoden 1, Suikoden 2, Suikoden 3. This this laid out Suikoden 1, 2, & 3 are more closely tied together then 4 or 5 are because they take place (in game) within a few years of each other.
    Finally, if you don't really care for Suikoden 1 that's totally understandable, but I would really give Suikoden 2 a shot (when you find it, I know it's a expensive game), or even Suikoden 3 for PS2 a shot. Suikoden 2 has an amazing story. Suikoden 3 has a good branching story, plus there is almost no chance of you getting lost on that map.
    Cheers!,
    Flik

      To expand on this IV is set more then a century before the others while V is set a few years before I so IV has the fewest ties to the rest.

    Oof King's Field is my absolute favorite PS1 game. It was one of the first games I bought for my PS1 as a kid, and I spent an entire summer exploring the game, absolutely love the game and play it at least once a year. The series as a whole is just fantastic once you get used to the controls.

    3. Parasite Eve 2

    I will say this beyond the beyond is a game that will make most people not like it and it is a game that gets better the longer its played and Samson the dude who gets cursed at the start of the game is a pain for most of it but once he breaks the cursed he is one of the best characters as for the story yeah it to is bad at the start but gets better from the middle on. I get why you don't like it but it really is a great game once you get pasted the beginning but it is also a game that is not for everyone. And people already cover suikoden

    IMO Chrono Cross should have been a new IP. To me the story feels like it was a standalone story with a few ties to Chrono Trigger shoved in at the last minute to justify calling it a sequel. I actually like the battle system though.

    • @DeeGee2009
      @DeeGee2009  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It really should have just been it’s on standalone story, agreed. I’m have some favorites for battle systems for PS1 that are different (Legend of Dragoon and Legend of Legaia for example) but Chrono Cross just wasn’t for me.

      Nonononooooo! The link at the end was major! When I played it, I was upset the entire time, the only thing keeping me into it being the great music composition. Then Chronopolis happened, and the true antagonist is revealed, and I was like hooooly shit. It's Time's revenge. Bravo, Squaresoft.

      I'm not saying you're wrong in disliking it. Believe me, I was right there with you. But they changed my mind. But I only ever played it once, when it released. I couldn't suffer through it again.

    • @roguerifter9724
      @roguerifter9724 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@airyshaggy83 To me it made no sense within the context of how time travel was established to work in the setting, and the few story links felt like they were either just thrown in or deliberately intended to piss fans of Trigger's cast off.
      If it had to be a Chrono sequel it needed to be set much further in the timeline for the changes between the political state of the world at the end of Trigger and its state at the beginning of Cross to make any sense to me. Even the extra scene they added to later Trigger releases trying to explain the cause left me still thinking it made absolutely no sense. When you add a part to a story specifically to explain something in an earlier and a watcher or reader is still left thinking it doesn't make sense the earlier writers massively screwed up IMO.
      spoilers
      And there is no real reason it needs to be set in the eleventh century AD. Only one character from Trigger in that era has any role in the plot but its Lucca's connection to Kid that makes her important to the events of Cross not Lucca herself. Have a new character adopt Kid and die that way, Kid still goes for revenge leading to Cross.

    • @airyshaggy83
      @airyshaggy83 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      None of that would have happened without the original cast's interference, which they all paid for. It also wouldn't make sense for some stranger to be targeted when they had no involvement in changing the timeline. I think what you're forgetting is that Cross was already taking place in a forced alternate timeline. That might be why it doesn't make sense to you. The story taking place 20 years later is irrelevant when you consider that those 20 years weren't supposed to happen in the first place. You also need to have an understanding of what F.A.T.E. was and when it was.

    Interesting video. I agree with some of these takes, such as Beyond the Beyond. It was the first rpg I bought for PS1 back in the 90's. The game looks good and is interesting in some ways, but I ultimately disliked it. I also agree that FF7 is not the greatest thing ever, although I do really like the materia system and I liked many of the characters (though not Caith Sith or Vincent).
    On the other hand, I really disagree on Chrono Cross. It is a very solid game, although you have to accept that it isn't Chrono Trigger 2. I can see that if you really, really love extensive character development, then the massive roster might not feel right, but I don't mind either small or large rosters. There is a small core of characters in CC that do get more development and they serve to anchor the plot pretty well, in my opinion.
    I also have to disagree on Threads of Fate, at least for the most part. The game can be challenging, but the action gameplay is pretty solid, both in terms of combat and platforming--with good variety. I also have always enjoyed rpg's that have hub towns that change and develop as the game progresses. As you noted, Mint is a humorous character and her storyline and dialogue are pretty amusing. Rue is definitely a much more subdued character, and I only beat his storyline once given how boring I found his demeanor (though it makes sense given his story). Mint, though, was fantastic, and I used to just replay her story even though there is a final ending if you beat both routes.
    Anyway, fun video and it made me nostalgic for some of the games I played decades ago.

    Your pronunciation of Suikoden is not too bad. However, I recommend pronouncing Suikoden "SWEE-koh-DEN". Without getting too deep into Japanese, here's why: "sui" is two syllables and "den" is two syllables (n is its own syllable), but "ko" is only one syllable. Therefore, even though Japanese doesn't stress syllables as we do in English, the "ko" part is a relatively small part of the word and gets skipped over a little faster when speaking Japanese.
    It's also my favorite game. I've never thought of the map as being big, but I suppose that's because there aren't that many locations and I'm familiar with the layout. The mini-map is very useful when navigating.
    Edit: Threads of Fate -- Rue actually plays a lot like Brave Fencer Musashi, while Mint's gameplay is streamlined. I enjoyed Threads of Fate a lot as a kid, mostly because you get a much better understanding of the game by playing both stories. I tend to play RPGs for the gameplay more than the story and it's been a long time since I played, but I still recommend giving Rue's story a look-see.
    I hope you enjoyed Radical Dreamers. I played it on emulator years ago and found it quirky but fun.

    Chrono Cross is THE most overrated game of all time. Chrono Trigger's greatest assets were 1) a tight cast that each individually struggled with their own identity and how it was contextualized in the world they grew up in and 2) A lean and faster-paced battle system than its FF contemporaries that made it more accessible to fans outside of the genre. For Chrono Cross to go completely in the opposite directions from both of these and call itself a sequel always baffled me, and the way people don't see through that baffled me even more.

      The thing about Cross is that your focus shouldn't be on the combat system nor the cast. It's the story. I don't know where this whole character identity struggle took place in the original, especially with Crono...for a guy trying to figure out who he truly is, he sure said absolutely nothing about it. But anyway, Cross writers did a great job of making you feel like the 2 stories are unrelated and then completely blindsiding you in the final act with the realization that, much like the main characters, you were intentionally kept in the dark the whole time.

    I think it's fair to not like timeless classics like Chrono Cross and FFVII. Like you, I'm also not a fan of N64 games like Ocarina of Time or anything Star Wars related. That being said... I award you no points and may god have mercy on your soul ^^

    To each their own LoD to me is the worst JRpg I've ever played and not because its actually the worst. others are worst but LoD doesn't do anything exceptional nor memorable and has the sole distinction of having Zero music i found myself humming along to. That's an irredeemable quality in a Jrpg for me. Its basically MID the game and that's awful, even worse Jrpgs had something that made that Something exceptional

      I’m a pretty big fan of Legend of Dragoon, but I will say it’s not without its flaws. The inventory system isn’t the best (32 items and 255 weapons/armor slots), it is a bit of a time to get leveled up in the game considering you only get some much experience per battle.

      @@DeeGee2009 - That’s awesome you wanna see the original first. Just be aware that you can only control the main character directly in battle, NOT your other 3 party members. Persona 3 Portable thankfully changed that, so you may wanna try Portable first (available on Switch, PlayStation, Steam, etc) and then try Reload to see how far the game has come. I’m just happy you’re interested in Persona 3. It’s my favorite RPG ever. You’ll love the story and characters.
