  • Collecting video games is getting increasingly tough but hopefully, with my top tips, you can make 2023 the year you bag your retro gaming holy grails & play on a budget too! As I'm a PS1 addict from the 90s, these tips will work best for people interested in collecting retro games but maybe not so far back as the 80s. #retrogaming #videogamecollecting #playstation

I don't enjoy collecting for the sake of collecting, it's because these are games that I genuinely want to play and experience, that's why I don't feel the need to have a huge collection. Although, there is a sense of ecstasy in opening a parcel delivered to you and adding games alphabetically to your shelf.

You are right that's what it should be about , I don't understand the whole collecting for the sake of collecting that's a tad silly it should be about collecting games that you actually play..

  • @Vakantscull

really good tips, especially the last one, I have no interest in having a complete set of anything, I just buy games based on what I want to actually play, and you're right, going through those games once they arrive does give you more of a drive to see what else is out there rather than just buying everything to show off how good you are at spending money

That is so true. You don't need to have every piece to be a collector. Just collect what you want. An old friend of mine didn't collect comics until the super hero movies started popping out. He only collects the graphic novels and stories of interest to him.
      Nothing wrong with that.
I spent 74 dollars on Suikoden 2, only the disc. I had it before but stupidly traded it. I bought a custom case and reprint of the manual.
I don't plan on selling my collection. I bought them to have fun.

I don't have a collection, per say, just a library of the ones I love. But I have tried to fill in some notable gaps over the last year and your absolutely right, has to be a case of opportunity not demand. Nice advice, much appreciated

I am a kind of slow collector. I have been at it for about a year now. I collect just about everything, I like it and it is fun for me. I play most of them at least once. I hope that I will have a large collection one day, then when I die "I" can donate it to a foundation that does video game presentation. Don't think they want anything I have now, but I have only been at it for a year. Great video.

Some top tips, before lockdown 90% of my pick ups are from charity shops or boots, thing with bootsales, you have to get there as the cars are rolling in, might not find the retro all the time but can find lots of common games to sell or trade to get the older stuff, hopefully soon we can get back out to the chazza shops and boots, I miss the trill of the hunt, not knowing what will turn will turn up. 👍🎮

I started collecting hardcore in the last year. And I'm happy with my collection so far. Got a lot of bangers and valuable games. I started originally when I was around 21 and stopped, I'm 29 now and starting from scratch. And what I've noticed is that in those 8 years the value of these consoles/games/accessories has risen crazy amounts since. I'm a PS1 guy as well, I bought the white mini PS1 at a pawn shop for $25 US at the time... and Metal Gear black label for $10. Went to my favorite Retro gaming store a couple of days ago and now they go for at least $75. And I just bought MGS black label again for $50 🤦🏻‍♂️ The prices will just keep rising at this point.. This was a very informative video with good tips. Keep it up brotha 🤙🏻💯

Very good advice. People today praise people with no ability to exhibit patience, and that don't mind spending copious amounts of money on games. I never see people say.. "Wait a minute, you completed the entire SNES library in 6 months.. Wow, I bet you paid a buttload of money." I've spent over 20 years on some of my collections, and that is why today, I have more than probably anyone in the world, besides maybe Last Gamer, at 39 complete libraries.

I try to get my ps1 games at a few local shops for the most part it's always exciting and a thrill to find something new or that youve been looking for. My best find so far and it was pretty expensive for being how old the game is but I was so excited just last week to find a copy of kingsfield for $50 the most expensive game I've ever bought for my ps1 collection other wise I try to stay around $15 or less being most of the games in the shops near me are in the $5-15 range with the rare occasional hit like kingsfield popping up for quite a bit more but I couldn't pass it up for it being a complete game especially being how expensive it is now been looking for that game at a decent price for going on almost 2 years now. How I pick out a game for the most part is by looking at the art and what gameplay is shown on the back not the best way i guess but I'm looking for more of if it's going to be fun to play than what the games worth even though that's also fun to find high priced games at low prices.

  • @zensai-gaming
    @zensai-gaming 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

decent tips but honestly being patient really just doesnt work for some games. i tried to be patient for kuon for a few years now but that game just keeps going up and i seriously doubt i will ever see that game for 60 bucks. i get that some may think a game isnt worth more than 5 bucks. but when a game is rare and in excellent cib condition sometimes you just have to give in and pay a premium price for a hard to find physical copy of a game you love. nothing else will do not even a rom. these days certain games are just not going down in value and never will or if they do it wont be by much. with each passing year it just gets harder to get them if you dont have the money. definitely need deep pockets to get the best each system has to offer. dont even get me started on the switch that system will bankrupt you if you dont show restraint.

That magazine seller want MUCH more--WTF--these people drive me nuts! Oh man, love that little crafted Spyro!
We're a bit scattered in our collecting. We've managed to get a good deal of the things we've actually wanted, which wasn't much, but now it's kinda all over. It's got pros and cons though for sure and being more focused is great advice and can help maintain funds and avoid burnout.
We collect stuff that catches our attention--whether it's games, toys, comics, and so on. We don't have all the time we'd like to for actually playing games, but it IS fascinating and fun to delve into the things we missed the first time around. Having grown up through those console ages we can still appreciate the games for what they are from their respective time periods, so it's a great rabbit hole to go down.

Sometimes prices make no sense. Like I picked up a much desired copy of Klonoa Door to Phantomile for about $100 a year ago, which was a ton to pay for one PS1 game (spoiler: Klonoa is well worth it) and now a copy is like $900-1000. Like, what?
Not buying new games for full price is a huge point of collecting. Sometimes you miss out on the odd rare game that eventually ends up being worth more than retail, but that's not common.
Some of my most sought after games are Brave Fencer Musashi, Einhander, Tomba!, all of which are $75-150ish, yet I've spent more than that in the past month or so just on new releases soooo

    • @TheRetroPerspective

Problem with those places is you really need to get there extremely early, we’re talking 5 in the morning if you wanna even get a chance of getting some of the rare titles without burning a hole in your wallet, it seems like it’s just completely dried up.

In a lot of instances it was just a matter of luck, I was known at a lot of boot fairs for finding some of the rarest games, so much so I had people even stalking me so that they could get to the rarest games first.
      So… yeah… bit messed up isn’t it?
Anyway good luck on your search, hope you don’t get anyone following you without knowing. 😆

Tell friends and family that you are collecting. When i started 9 years ago i did got a lot of old stuff they considerd worthless, mostly gba and ps 2 stuff but still.

The people you mentioned at the early part of the video about outright buying all the PS1 games by splashing the cash in a couple of months.
That makes me think it's probably the same people who downloaded diablo immortal on the smartphone when it came out and spent thousands just to upgrade all the best gear without even going through the game first...... 😐

Collecting for me its a slow Burn, sure I can buy a bunch of games on a week... But then I wont buy more until I at least play them for a while

    Have to disagree at 2:10
I only have a small collection so this isn't coming from a full set collector. But if you spent decades collecting to where youre approaching a full set, then of course you're going to pay whatever it costs to complete your collection. They've already spents years or decades, how does it make them less of a collector just because they aren't willing to wait any longer? How much you paid for a game has little to do with whether you're a collector or not

@@TheRetroPerspective you mentioned your in lockdown in the video so casually like it's an everyday part of life. Don't take it personal your in the majority there. It's what makes me believe Covid lockdowns were a dry run for something much bigger. Governments wanted to see if the ppl would accept such harsh overlord watch in their lives and the experiment was a raging success.

@@Vipersinferno not taking it personally, just don't see the relevance. We do have an ultra right wing, fascist government here in the UK who want to kill/enslave the working class, but they didn't even do a lockdown until way after it was advised. Boris Johnson didn't even attend the European talks on the issue, too busy playing golf or spending our tax money on champagne. You're in the majority as most people didn't give a fuck about lockdown and I don't blame them.

Not willing to pay more than one hundred bucks for a game in good condition. I’m just trying to get the games that I enjoyed so I can play them while they appreciate in value years later, in case I ever feel like parting.
