For me it's surpassed by the jump from 16 bit to 64 bit with the N64. Seeing Mario in full 3D and walking out into Hyrule Field for the first time are formative gaming experiences, which I wish I could experience again. Simply unreal

Still love Killer Instinct today. My grandma took me in a taxi to go get it at Best Buy. It appeared they were sold out and grandma was like we're leaving now. On the way to leave there was one copy left sticking out ,out of place ,in the music aisle. I was so happy and relieved. Great memories. Thx abuela. Miss ya. See you again in Heaven one day.

In my opinion, DK3 has the best SNES graphic. Having released it in 1996/7 at the end of SNES lifespan, it was truly a swan song. Some people might say DKC2 is better than DKC3 in gameplay, but graphic-wise, DKC absolutely more impressive. I can't forget by the time I reach K3, and Rockface Rumble music hits the first area, I was amazed how good the graphic complements the gameplay.
Later I realized the background is similar to Chief Thunder's stage in Killer Instinct. No surprise there because both games made by Rare.

Definitely depends if you're on a CRT and original hardware or playing it on a modern device/monitor. That's true of almost all the digitized/rendered graphics games of this era. The Mortal Kombat games look good even on GameGear if you play on original device. They look pretty bad on a high res display. NBA Jam is so much more about the gameplay than graphics but it looks so much better in a real crt arcade cab than emulated on modern console or PC.

Terranigma is a really underappreciated gem in the SNES library, sad that it only released in Europe outside of Japan and never had a remake or rerelease, not even on Virtual Console.
Just a correction about that game, it was made by Enix, not Square. They still weren't merged at the time.

What you are seeing is "just" a vector animation, not a real 3D scene. A bit like playing fmv, but generated in realtime and much more storage friendly. The video alludes to this by mentioning the different animation segments which could be stitched together to create different tracks. Look up the Amiga demo "State of the Art" by the group Spaceballs to see the effect in its infancy. Members of the group later joined Funcom and developed this game.
The intros for "Another World" and Flashback are other examples of this technique, or check out the more recent Amiga demo "Eon".

Sega fanboys love to bring out that the Snes games used special chips, but in my opinion, the console was designed with that in mind, so it's a sign of a more well thought machine, not the contrary. Even without the cartridges chips though, Snes still beats the Genesis, look at games like Mortal Kombat 2 and 3, how they look a lot better than Genesis version.

Great video, but might I add, Terranigma was the fifth game in a quintology. We Quintet Fanboys include Actraiser 1 & 2 in there, mainly for the similarities in the graphical presentation and similar tone in story-telling. None of these games are actually connected, they basically all run on the same engine and hit similar story beats, which made people come up with all kinds of theories, how these games are connected. They are not, except for a few cheeky callbacks by the devs

1994-1996 had the largest leaps in graphic fidelity in SNES titles since 1990 release, the advent of additional DSP/SuperFX1/2 co-processors in the cartridges gave the SNES an additional boost in capability, and closed the gap at the time to Neo-Geo.

If you didn't know to break out of combos, you were as good as dead in that game, as the combos system was insane and all that the pros were doing is rushing from one combo to the next one the moment they figure out that you cannot break out of them.

As for the remove stages, I remember central processing e1m6 and containment area e2m2 were missing on snes but not sure what the episode 3 one was.

Mega Man & Bass I enjoyed, though i only played the GBA version. DBZ Hyper Dimension was also fun! I liked how health worked. I plan to get a copy of the game for myself, as I only played it on emulator. I've played a little of Terrangima and I remember liking it. Slightly off-topic, but I like the song you picked for the Terranigma section. What's it from? DKC3 is the only one of the trilogy that I didn't play as a kid, so I don't have a lot of memories or even time playing it, though I did get it for my collection some time ago. Love me some Donkey Kong!

Mega Man and Bass looks like a PS1 game cause it kind of is. Most of the graphics and sprites were borrowed from Mega Man 8 on the PS1/Saturn. Which makes it all the more impressive.

Just here to say I'm really surprised you haven't included Stunt Race FX yet. And I've never played Terranigma, but from the footage, I would have put Spike McFang or Secret of Evermore first. But that's probably just down to art style preference. Also Earthworm Jim had some of the smoothest animation ever on the SNES.

The crazy thing about DKC3 is that I've been playing the Japanese version of DKL3 on the GBC and there is so much that's the same, it's crazy. If you think DKC3 was impressive for the SNES hardware, DKL3 made the GBC almost look like a GBA.

It seems that you are simply upscaling your emulator recordings to 1080p? Keep in mind that TVs of the era were displaying their screen (which was slightly covered by the bezel to protect the tube (the area being covered called the overscan)) - in the 4:3 aspect ratio. There are many ways to do that with emulator output; if preserving sharp pixels is your goal I'd upscale a NTSC SNES frame with a nearest-neighbor filter to a width of 6 * 256 = 1536 pixels and a height of 5 * 224 = 1120 pixels (and PAL SNES height to 5 * 239 = 1195), then bilinear-resize the result to 1440x1080.
(Of course the _real_ aspect ratio is slightly different... A console can add small borders depending on when exactly it's rendering pixels, and its pixels can be packed almost arbitrarily tight together... It all depends on the frequency that is chosen for the pixel clock.)

Pretty good list here and a number of games that I consider standouts in my collection (Hagane and an English translation of Mega Man and Bass, especially so).
I think one game that a lot of people don't know about and could easily have found itself on this list is Rendering Ranger. While it was never officially released outside of Japan and the Super Famicom, I was able to get an English NTSC SNES cart of it a few years ago so I could experience it myself. Let me tell ya, that game is a thing of beauty. Some of the later flying levels (and by "later", I mean "level 3") have sections that have an unbelievably high number of enemies on screen at once... and while I haven't seen the actual numbers, it doesn't feel like the game ever drops a single frame. And it's not like these are low-quality enemy sprites either; they're large and detailed. Typically you'd expect some kind of slowdown in situations like that, but whoever the 4th dimensional being that resides in the in-between space that holds reality together (AKA Manfred Trenz) was that programmed this thing worked some actual magic to get that game made and running as well as it does.
