  • EDINBURGH ROYAL MILE From Holyrood Palace to Edinburgh Castle
A full tour of the famous Royal Mile, Edinburgh from Holyroodhouse Palace right up to Edinburgh Castle including all the amazing sights and highlights along the way!!
The Royal Mile Edinburgh (Scottish Gaelic: Am Mìle Rìoghail) is a succession of streets forming the main thoroughfare of the Old Town of the city of Edinburgh in Scotland. The term was first used descriptively in W M Gilbert's Edinburgh in the Nineteenth Century (1901), "...with its Castle and Palace and the royal mile between", and was further popularised as the title of a guidebook by R T Skinner published in 1920, "The Royal Mile (Edinburgh) Castle to Holyrood(house)".
The Edinburgh Royal Mile runs between two significant locations in the royal history of Scotland: Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace. The total length of the streets between the Castle and the Palace is almost exactly a Scots mile (1.81 km), hence the name.
The streets which make up the Royal Mile in Edinburgh are (west to east) Castlehill, the Lawnmarket, the High Street, the Canongate and Abbey Strand. The Royal Mile is the busiest tourist street in the Old Town, rivalled only by Princes Street in the New Town.
The Royal Mile is at the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, with Edinburgh Castle at its head and the Palace of Holyroodhouse at its foot. Its name comes from its tradition as a processional route for kings and queens for the last 500 years.
    Historic buildings
The Royal Mile has retained many historic buildings to visit - Gladstone’s Land, The Writers’ Museum, Mary King’s Close, the Tron Kirk, John Knox House and the Museum of Edinburgh. To get a real taste of the past though, explore the many closes and wynds, the narrow passageways that line the Royal Mile. In places like Riddles Court, Tweedale Court, Bakehouse Close and Dunbar’s Close you will step back in time to the old city.
    From top to bottom
At the top of the Royal Mile is the Lawnmarket. Do not miss Gladstone’s Land on the north side, the best surviving example of an Old Town tenement from the 17th century. The Edinburgh tradition was for the best apartments to be on the middle floors, with cheaper flats at the top and in the basement.
Further down lies the High Street with the striking St Giles Cathedral, founded during the reign of King David I in the 1130s soon after the founding of the royal burgh. Outside the cathedral is the Heart of Midlothian - a pattern of coloured setts (cobbles) which mark the place where the old Tolbooth stood, also used as prison.
The crossing of St Mary’s Street and the Royal Mile marks the location of the Flodden Wall raised after the defeat of the Scots in the Battle of Flodden Field in 1513. East of the wall lay the separate burgh of the Canongate, formed from the abbatial lands of Holyrood Abbey. Today, at the bottom of the Royal Mile is the Scottish Parliament, designed by Enric Miralles.
Abbey Strand ends the mile with the Palace of Holyroodhouse initiated by James IV in the 16th century and remodelled by Charles II in 1670. Close by is Holyrood Abbey, founded in 1128 by King David I.
This is where it all started. The Royal Mile - the backbone of the Old Town that leads from Edinburgh Castle down to the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Scottish Parliament - has seen centuries of Edinburgh life.
An easy walking distance from Edinburgh Waverley Train Station, the area is a must-see for every Edinburgh visitor.

Great video of my Favourite City! (I've visited 6 times from my home in Belfast... In the last 3 months!). Don't forget to look down as well as up. Or you'll miss The Heart of Midlothian! Also the "Gold Bricks (Cobblestones)". They mark the outline of Historical Buildings, Borders and Outlines. You'll see them in lots of areas. Right down the Royal Mile. Even outside The Worlds End Pub. Where they map out the Old City Boundary Gates.
It's a Wonderful City. Which has just been voted the Safest in the U.K.
    And as a Lone-traveller??? I can appreciate.
Please keep the Video's rolling in!

The best part is the heart of midlothian, spit in the middle, (for good luck 👍 or so they say) the worst part is the waste of scottish peoples money at the bottom called the Scottish Parliament the joke that it is.

In 2005, stayed in Edinburgh for 4 days. Used the Hop on/off buses. Spent one day in the castle. The last night was a farewell haggis dinner for our group. Would love to return. So much that I missed.

Thankyou for that. My late mother and sister, and I, walked the Royal Mile in 1988. We started from Prince Street, went to the Castle (fabulous), then did the Mile up to Holyrood, which was also fabulous. Walked past the Witchery! My sister really into that at the time and have a memorable photo of her standing outside it. Went into St Giles! That was more my scene! Thanks for this memory. I know I’ll never get back to Scotland, land of my ancestors. It really is the most magical place on earth. 👍😍🇦🇺

I loved the lack of commentary during the walk, but appreciated the printed messages describing what we were seeing. It was very much like actually being there. We were on a tour of GB several months ago with Edinburgh being our last destination, but we both came down with Covid and were quarantined in our hotel room room for 10 days. However the Apex Marketplace hotel was great and my wife got all the British tv she wanted!

The Rugby World Cup was on and Ireland were here playing. I went into Deacon Brodies Tavern near the castle, and a couple of guys were watching a match on TV. Being from Canada, I didn't know the game, but they were good enough to explain some of the rules to me.

@@GimbalWalkTV Compared to the 1970's and 80's The Royal Mile is very different to what it is now, for example it used to be full of hand crafted local Scottish kilt, cashmere and bagpipe makers etc, there were also all the usual businesses like butchers and bakers etc... during the 1990's the City Council began it's push to increase tourism within the City (the Royal Mile especially) allowing trading licences to be changed from conventional ones to more tourist specific licences.
As a result a lot of the previously conventional businesses that you'd expect to see in any High Street were bought out and converted into gift shops (or as we call them in Edinburgh, Tartan tat shops).
I understand why the City Council chose to go the route they did, it brings in a lot of money for the City, but it has somewhat killed (imo) what The Royal Mile used to be, and still should be... a living thriving street for the residents who live along it.
Anyways, if my memory serves me right the butcher shop that Jan Trewitt is referring too was close to the mini roundabout at the top of Johnston Terrace, just as The Royal Mile changes from the Lawnmarket to Castlehill on the walk up to the castle.

Enjoyed every minute --Great Work-- Is the walk up to the castle fairly easy or would a senior find it to difficult ? Second question what camera lens combo did you use the video quality was excellent.

Hi David. I was there two weeks ago and saw many seniors walking up to the castle. If you feel you may not be able to walk it, the cab takes you to the gate. Good Luck and I hope you enjoy!

Thanks so much for the video. As a student many years ago I lived near the top of the Royal Mile, I felt very lucky!! I don’t think there were quite so many tourist shops then, it was a bit more real! If you have come as far as Edinburgh you’d love the East Neuk fishing villages and St Andrews!!

I"m in East Lothian at the moment I think - North Berwick area?

East Lothian is lovely too. Look north over the Forth to the East Neuk, all the historic villages from Largo round to St Andrews are very scenic! Have fun wherever you go anyway!

The building at the start if the esplanade is a set of flats...only costs about 4 million pounds for one :)

Just to add the building at the end as you describe it to be, is "The Royal Bank" and NOT the Museum. The Museum is in "Chamber Street". Its a great video.

@@GimbalWalkTV Two corrections, the bank that Alyysa refers to used to be the headquarters of The Bank of Scotland, not The Royal Bank of Scotland.
It is actually a museum now, of money, which is odd given that the bank collapsed after the 2008 financial collapse and the headquarters have been converted into a museum of money.
What is really at the the bottom of the Mound (at the junction with Princes St) though is an art gallery, The Royal Scottish Academy so technically there is a museum at the bottom of the Mound, just not the one in your video ;)
