Time to finish rebuilding the front brake calipers. I had been waiting on
a new rebuild kit from rockauto.com. The first kit I ordered did
not come with the two small rubber washers which reside between
the two halves of the caliper. Also, Christmas comes early with
    a little unboxing bonus!
Brake Fluid: Use DOT 4 for your W126.

Found it using the W126 page on Facebook:

I am wanting to rebuild my calipers as I bought a w116 1979 300sd. Right rear pad we’re close to zero. The caliper piston seals that the pads rest against were chewed up. Anyway the calipers are original so I wanted to keep them. Your video along with Kent Bergsma’s gave me enough knowledge to want to try it so thank you for posting what you did. I also got a blue seat back in from EBay but a palomino seat bottom. I could kick myself… the seat back looks nice but..

Just about teared my eyeballs out today fighting a w126 that needed rear breaks. After almost dropping the car on my head, I discovered (to my dismay) that the rubber boots on the pistons were gonzo'd. Thank you for your video and wisdom. (this freeking car had factory original break pads on it at 250k LMFAO)

    Thanks for posting the video.
I didn't see any footage on how to connect the dust boot to the caliper. There is a lip on the caliper housing that the boot has to attach to to keep dust from getting onto the piston.

Assuming you are referring to video section at 3:50 ? The rubber dust cover simply slips around the piston. It's easy. The metal ring on top of it is a little more difficult. The ring has a lip (or flange) that points downward and slips around the piston, yet inside the dust cover. In other words the lip/flange resides between the piston and the dust cover. It takes a little work to fit it properly.

After having disassembled both calipers, each one had a piston which appeared to be stuck or at least greatly hindered by rust and/or dirt. The brakes worked since each one had one piston which worked pretty well but I am thinking that after we get this back together the stopping power should be significantly improved. Note that I thought the brakes were actually fine on the car before, but after this rebuild there should be a marked improvement.

Sorry that not what I meant. The open pistons in w123 have step on the end. That step is for better braking. It always sqieze the top of brake pads first. People forget about that. (very important)

Thanks. Excellent tutorial. What was the torque for your 4 bolts which combined two parts of the caliper?

Thanks. Honestly I cannot find that torque rating anywhere. These bolts are fairly large and you should be able to apply 30 to 40 lb/ft with no issue. I hate to say it, but I would simply go by "feel". The Mercedes factory service manual does not list the torque rating. If others here have more information, please share.

    Nice job!
One of my 1979 300sd's (w116) was originally equipped with Bendix brake calipers and my other 300sd with ATE Calipers. I removed the Bendix calipers to rebuild them myself but ran into issues with finding the correct size rubber seals that install on top of the piston.
The rubber seal kits that I purchased do not fit.
Do you have the part# to your Bendix calipers so I can compare them to mine? I do see a printed number on the caliper so I will double check that number with the printed number on my calipers. Can you also provide the part# to the Centric kit?
    Any help is appreciated.

I used CENTRIC 14335010. Go to rockauto.com and search for your vehicle. They have the kits.

What way piston should be turn in direction to brake discs?

    • @ImpalamansGarage

The open end of the piston should face the pad.

unfortunately this seat-back is incorrect for your car, your car doesn't have rear seat headrests, so unless you intend to also buy blue headrests, you will be left with 4 large holes on the top of the seat back

I also purchased the head rests and all are installed in a later video.
