Regarding safety. My 81 240D developed a very soft squishy brake pedal that went almost to the floor driving home from work one day and although the car stopped it took longer than normal and I could tell something was very wrong. I found a brake fluid trail behind the car from the road into my garage. It was coming from the right front wheel. Turned out someone had replace the flexible hoses on the front in the past and had screwed up managing somehow to install the right front incorrectly so that it "flexed" the wrong way. And when the steeing was turned full right lock the inside of the wheel rim just barely rubbed against the incorrectly positioned hose. Over time it had worn a weak spot in the hose and that day when I braked it gave out. Fortunately the rear circuit was not affected and that was what stopped the car. It was an eye opening experience for sure. Showing how much more the car relies on the front brakes than the rear, and also, never assume previous work has been done properly. Alwyas check yourself.
First ever car project I started this month is a 83 280TE wagon. Literally doing the process each weekend. TH-cam is great for self-teaching.

kinda off topic but.. my recently acquired W123 300D has an annoying wobbling at low speed -- can't really feel it faster than 30mph except as vibration in the steering wheel. This is on FLAT ground. I suspect it's coming from the front-end right side. Any tips on where to look first? I haven't heard any whining/groaning noises so I don't think it's the bearings
Start with tires and then check for loose wheel bearings. Then move on to ball joints. Are the tires old? I have seen old tires do this.
@@Mercedessource the previous owner replaced the following re: suspension
4x new Premium Tires (only a couple of hundred miles on them now)
4x new Bilstein shocks
4x new brake calipers, pads and fluid
2 front ball joints
Upper control arms
All of the labor was done by a shop and he even got it aligned, though I don’t know how well. In retrospect he was probably trying to fix this wobble too!
I got a front end bearing kit from you so I’ll probably inspect and replace those next. On cursory inspection I didn’t notice any in/out play of the wheels. possible the alignment is just poor?
@@Mercedessource we’ll update! Pretty sure I isolated it to a loose ball joint in the right hand tie rod end! Very happy to have found a definitive answer
