I like her take on the solo section. That kind of free-style polyrhym is so cool. I've been a fan of Rush since the time Moving Pictures came out. And I have a couple Mars Volta tapes/cds from back in the 90s. A really cool fusion of Prog and Punk Rock. There were commenters in the Drumeo video saying she was mid or that they were unimpressed. Do they honestly believe that Neil wrote that drum part in one sitting? Like he didn't take some time developing it into the final masterpiece that are all familiar with?
That moment when Neil plays the intro fill and she goes woah! and you went yeah! is so special. Like you are acknowledging her acknowledging Neil for how amazing it is.
her attitude basically represents the mars volta's music to me. "I have no clue what you'll hear when you listen, but I'm having a blast." I remember Omar saying in an interview years ago that he's isnt really trained or educated at all. He composes the majority of the music on many albums(dude has dozens of solo albums) but he pretty does it all by feel, or so he said once.
Rush is the greatest rock band of all time and Neil Peart (obviously) is the greatest rock drummer of all time. That being said, at least Philo "gave it a shot" which means she has guts and I have a lot of respect for that. Most drummers wouldn't even dare try to take on such a challenge. Brilliant video!
Yes to one point you make... more than any other band I know of, with Rush the vocals and drum parts are locked in with each other. Probably most of the time its Neil tracking Geddy, just a hunch. Either way this is a big part of what makes that Rush sound, they don't play against each other, counterpoint parts or whatever, they just go all out for a very tight, punchy energetic experience.
That invariably happens because Neil was the one that wrote the lyrics for the songs most of the time and would give them to Geddy and adjust them as the song was being composed.
The setup looks to be 15" Byzance Jazz Thin Hats, 18" Byzance Extra Dry Thin Crash (Yes, that's not a ride), 19" Byzance Traditional Medium Thin Crash, a stack which a 8" Byzance Traditional Spash on top of a 10" Byzance Vintage Splash. The "X-Hat" is a bit of a mystery. It looks to be a Byzance Dark 16" Crash which has been customized with some other mystery cymbal on the bottom. Meinl does make trash cymbals with holes in them but none of their production line has 5 holes of equal size like that. Drumset appears to be a Tama Starclassic.
If you watched the Drumeo one with ZackGrooves playing Architects (highly recommend), he also goes one shoe on, one shoe off! Kept wondering what that was about haha. Love your videos and your enthusiasm for music :)
Just wanna say, this is one of if not my fave drummer hears, and this is my favorite reaction video to it. I’ve stopped here a few times. The half time pocket she so effortlessly fits in, the nice fills, her playing on the solo, and your reactions to all them. Just a great combo
The Mars Volta are a psychotic, and creepy modern day Rush. Enjoy. There's a reason she nailed this. TMV are fking legends. You absolutely have to react to TMV. I would LOVE to hear an open minded Rush fan's take on their abrasive take on prog rock. "Cassandra Geminni" is a 32 minute song. "Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus" would be a good starting point. OR "Roulette Dares(The Haunt of)" If you want to start at the beginning. :D

she is clearly aware because she had the sticks but it doesn't mean she knows their songs or how to play them it's not her style of music and rush isn't really a mainstream band in europe
@@morbidmanmusic I haven't forgotten the Beatles! I have them in my practice playlist! Ringo's style really helps practice great groove beats as a drummer! 😁
The solo section is very reminiscent of how she sounds in The Mars Volta. Awesome band you should def check out!
Oh man, The Mars Volta have had so many amazing drummers; Jon Theodore, and Thomas Pridgen, and now Philo.
deantoni parks is really cool too.
Theres a side project album with Zac Hill from Hella and Death Grips too, called Cryptomnesia
I loved how you broke this down and reacted to each moment. Honestly really appreciated!
You need to hear the Mars Volta, huge band, huge albums, De-loused in the Comatorimum and The Bedlam in Goliath are CLASSICS.

Wow, her Mars Volta side came out super hard during that solo 😄

Since I already saw the Drumeo video, I was waiting for the moment you realise she's also using the same drum sticks 😂❣️
Well, even she didn't realize that until Brandon pointed it after she did her final take.

World class! She killed it
Awesome video. Hope to hear some The Mars Volta reactions in the near future
Philo did an awesome job. Neil woul have a big, big smile seeing and hearing this...
great comments. Enjoyed your reaction
The mars volta!
Makes me appreciate how Neil drumming complimented Geddys lyrics and didn’t cascade all over them
In "Subdivisions," and probably other songs, he uses something really similar to that washy unclutched hi-hat, during the last chorus.
Nine days in and the original video has already reached 1M views.
I feel like her playing just exudes class, what she did during the guitar solo was great

i never heard about rush before

You also have drummers like Bob Jarzombek who play barefooted.
You're damned right you're going to have to listen to The Mars Volta. Because you play an instrument.
''Who the hell do you think I am !''
I'm sorry I have to do it... your Gurenn Lagann poster is epic ! ☠

Solo sounds like something off a Zappa album.

Is there a German drummer who doesn't use Meinl cymbals?
That is a very valid question! 😂
Yes. Christoph Schneider is a Sabian endorser, Mike Terrana is a Paiste endorser, to name a few.

How the hell does a professional drummer with a rock band get this far in her career without ever hearing ANY Rush?
@@TheGalantHamburger maybe that's the key, starting on a completely clean slate
this is such an odd removed concept, reacting to a drummer learning. superfluous. Now I will do one reacting to your reaction.
Go for it! 😁
A rock drummer that isn't aware of Neil Peart and Rush is not possible. This was a set-up for sure.
