    Thank you so much! I am from a small town in Florida and get extremely bad anxiety traveling on trains especially in foreign countries. This helped ease my mind.

      Haha don't worry ;) Even as a Dutch guy it took me quite some time to get more comfortable on taking the right train... ;)
      But member of staff are usually friendly. Just try to find them BEFORE you board the train and explain your problem quickly if something should go wrong/you took the wrong train with a ticket that's not valid or such. If you expect the problem to work itself out and you wait for members of staff to show up, you could be in for a less friendly treatment, but my experience is they are usually lenient towards tourists.

    I think this is the best video I have seen about how to purchase a train ticket from the machines at Schiphol.
    I've been searching without luck for a video about how to use them to purchase the OV Chipkaart.
    I think I saw a GVB site that had a link where you can practice using these machines from home.
    I followed the link but couldn't find the practice area.

      @MikeYoungeasytravel  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Madeinloneliness Hi, Take the train from Schiphol to Centraal Station. Taking the tram or taxi from Central station to your hotel depends on how you can handle your luggage. If you can carry both pieces of luggage at the same time, then take the tram. If you have to lift one into place then get the other, then take a taxi. Have Fun! Mike

      Hi Ian, you can easily bring your luggage in the bike portion of train. This area usually has fold up seating. You can also find room where you board the train. Hi Mike, thanks for the great video! I am stopping over in Amsterdam for 7 hours and want to explore city centre. Do you know how long it will take to clear customs once I disembark the aircraft? How soon should I head back Amsterdam Centraal? I want to make sure I don't miss my connecting flight, so would 2 hours prior to departure be a safe call? Lastly, does the train ticket machine accept US credit card or does it have to be European one? Thanks in advance for your time in answering all my questions.

    • @MikeYoungeasytravel
      @MikeYoungeasytravel  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi iiona c,
      It should take about 20 minutes to clear customs, but this depends on the line. The trip back takes about 17 minutes, so I would catch the train about 2 and half hours before your flight. This gives you about 4 hours in Amsterdam. I think the kiosks takes US credit cards, but I am not 100% sure of this detail. If you can, please like this video and subscribe to my youtube channel. • @MikeYoungeasytravel
      @MikeYoungeasytravel  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Hamad,
      The US magnetic strip cards can be given a pin, but you have to request a pin from your bank (it will take about 3 weeks to get it via the mail). In Europe we use the credit and debit cards with the chips, and they require a PIN code. Bringing some cash (100 Euros) is always a good idea. Remember, you can always purchase your NS rail tickets at the service desk in Schiphol.
      Note, when I travel I always bring some cash, and my debit card to get additional cash when needed.

      Do machine always require pin? If that’s the case if I use credit card and punch a pin then it will be considered as cash advance..

    How does someone in a wheelchair get on the train?

      Hi Virgil,
      NS rail does have provisions for people in wheelchairs. However, you will have to talk to an NS representative prior to boarding the train (I would try the NS service desk at Schiphol). They will provide a ramp to allow you to get on and off the train. Most stations also have elevators and/or work arounds, when needed. You should not have any problems.
      Have fun,
      Mike

      Thanks for the update! I did, the last time I came back from the US, but it may have changed.
