This reminds me of making rings for chainmail. However I am using a hand drill setup on a custom rig which allows me to use much thicker wire :)
the welding rod is copper coated for corrosion resistance for longterm storage without rusting.

This is such a good, competent, very well described video. I love it. I'm an electronics engineer and electronics people wind coils (for prototyping), but usually do it badly, this will help them.
Thanks for this I've been making coils and jump rings this way for years I was beginning to think that I was doing something wrong (I do wear safety glasses) but t is the easiest way. If you are a crafty type you can make oval shaped wooden 'mandrels' with small hole drilled in the round bit that fits into your drill chuck and you can make nice oval links for charm bracelets (hammer the wire first to harden).

problems...Trying to cut same size coils..I was hoping you had a easy and fast way to cut them to size..I am still learning
to bead and to use wire. So i don't make so many errors..I make little things for the kids in my family and some big ones to..lol..I do get asked to sell my little gifts..If i learn more i might..Thanks again...JRC.
Hi,check out Step 1 on this class, www.beaducation.com/online_classes/80-tornado-beads. About halfway into that step I show how to cut them up. To cut them the same size, I draw 2 lines on my left pointer finger and line the coil up to those lines and snip and cut from there. Kind of tricky, eh? Just remember, the lines you draw on your finger are likely thicker than the wire, so try working from the inside of one line to the inside of the other. Good luck!
Excellent tutorial! TFS! Learned a lot of awesome time saving and workmanship quality tips. Anxious to get some coils made. In fact, I have an order of a boat load of wire on it's way to me, in lots of colors. How pretty that will be to use mixed metals and/or mixed colors of coiled beads and simple coiled elements for all sorts of jewelry projects. Can you tell I'm excited?! I even happen to own a ring clamp.

Im an avid Wire Wrapper of all different Gems n Crystals. This was a great video! Never would have thought using a drill to coil wire! i have a hand corded dremel and a bench grinder with flux shaft, ill have to try that out. Would just Thick like 16 gauge copper wire work as the host for coiling? its half hard. and takes alot of force to coil a thinner wire. I Subscribed to your channel. lookin forward to future vids. Thank You! :)

Any suggestions for coiling square wire for jump rings and keeping the wire straight so they close properly? It almost looked like using a ring clamp or nylon jaw pliers might ensure it feeds on properly? Any help would be appreciated ! :-)

I only had one question, if my drill does not have a reverse drilling option, how shall i remove the tension in the end, before pulling out my coil?
You can just release the coil but beware that it will shift a bit when it is released so keep your fingers away from sharp edges.

I'm assuming I can get that welding rod at Lowe's, but what would I ask for, what gauge, what size, how long?
basically you want any hard wire that is the gauge you want. The length shouldn't be any longer than a foot.
I used 16ga copper wire as my core wire and 20ga to coil with, WELL ! I couldn't get the coil wire off, it was sooo funny. I have to find a stiffer piece of material and try again.
Where do I get those tools?
For a drill you can check out your local hardware store. Lisa uses 1mm welding rod, but you can also use piano wire or any other hard wire.

Go to a welding shop and ask for TIG stainless steel rods, the best and stiffer is the alloy 316, but 308, 309 and 312 work very well. You have then in diameters 1/16, 3/32 , 1/8 and some times bigger.
It's a very common stuff easy to find in most towns. Shops will accept to sell it by piece. Great advantage it do not rust. Great for making tools also.
If you need thinner diameters the RC models shops have the very stiff piano string. That rust and have to be kept oiled.
