  • How to capitalize on a wind damaged roof. How to deal with an insurance claim from beginning to end, from spotting potential storm related roof damage, to estimating, writing the paper work, getting the job and finishing. How xactimate works and how to maximize your insurance claim, making sure every dollar that is available is paid. Also how to do and read the Xactimate paperwork.

I love you. I don't watch TV. I work long days, do my paperwork, mix a drink and watch TH-cam. I'm pretty damn good at the trades, but I suck as a businessman. Either some piece of shit roofing outfit or some insurance company is going to off your ass. (I hope that is a joke) I watch TH-cam because as good as I am, there's always someone smarter, a new product, a new shortcut (that doesn't cheat the customer) or a new technique that I can make a little more money or give my customers a better job a little bit cheaper.
So in other words I watch TH-cam hoping to find YOU. There is a tile guy Sal Diblasi who is for real, Essential Craftsman, Reg Coates, Sherbrooke Tree Service, a very few others, and now YOU. I've done enough roofing and flood damage with insurance payouts. I've turned down offers to specialize in insurance work. If I'd of seen your videos years ago I'd be retired now.
Thank you for being as honest as you are and for being willing to share in your success. You are one hell of a man. I can see the pride in your work when you talk about it. I always tell my crew that we don't get paid to do a bath remodel or replace a roof, we get paid to put a smile on our customer's faces. Long as we do that we always will have work. So far that's been true. I also make my guys understand we leave things better than we find them. I don't care if the neighbors dog is taking crap in my customers yard, we clean that up to when we clean up at the end of each day. And I always try to give the customer something extra for no charge. Don't even mention it to them. See how many referrals that gets you.
Like I said, I love you Bro. You're one of a kind. Keep making videos and stay as honest and like I wish my guys would be- stay curious.

Eric, I do a lot of hail/wind insurance work and supplemental as well down south. I was surprised to see that you did temporary repairs. On a roof that I feel confident will be approved by adjuster but needs repairs in meantime, I typically use a tarp and here is why. I've seen adjusters consider repairs as mitigated damages and will then possibly deny claim altogether. Being that a homeowner is required to mitigate damages per their policy, I tarp over the areas (after agent or insurance company is made aware and approves tarping) because then adjuster can still see damage when they arrive. Not only that, but anything beneath tarp then has to be replaced. This is especially nice when you have to go over a hip/ridge because then you can get the entire other side. Insurance then pays claim plus supplemental and O&P, and then also will cover your fee for tarps.

exactly. im working huge storms up here in the buffalo area. ive sold over 2.6 million in insurance alone (myself as a salesman). the majority of the companies up here don't have an idea about the insurance game or get too frustrated to process it. Plus, the highest deductible ive seen this year was for $1,600 (majority are $500 or $1,000) and im dealing with a few $250's. its basically order taking at this point.

In addition to adding line items for steep pitch and 2 story+ heights for the replacement, add them in as well for the tear off. In your video example that would add in $500.

Hey Eric, your spot on. I have been a cat adjuster for 27 years. It does vary from one carrier to the next. however. Some want to fight to keep every dime, others want it repaired as if it was their own house. It is funny because most carriers use an ISO policy which is close to identical to the others. Then there are different policies within every company. I am going to retire in a year and thought about doing roofing sales. Knowing the policies and major company OGs will really help dealing with those day-um adjusters. Peace

    Eric , grt job dude!
Look I have insurance co. With bad rep. Finally after two years I was told I m approved.
But. My patio lifted and pulled it away a bit from main roof on house. All inspectors said it was wind uplift. How would I know! I m sure insurance will say it wasn’t but what else could it be. Many trees have gone down laying same way as seems logical for roof damage.
Help somebody. Everybody knows the company and ran when they found out who I had. Thanks

Have done 748 installs for lowes this year alone plus our work outside of lowes. We install for 7 stores. That makes it easy to keep good crews and if a storm hits in our town or near by I have plenty of crews on hand to take on lots of storm damage when it hits. Anyways man I enjoy your videos. Everything is said pretty much dead on, but I would go back edit out the part about eating deductibles. Everytime you do it, it is felony insurance fraud for you and the customer. If an insurance guy was to see that they could audit all your claims.
The legal way to eat deductibles is the get screens, fence and deck staining and interior paid for and then only bill for ACV on those trades and credit that $ to ward the deductible
Love your videos bro, very inspirational

If the roof is brittle, it cannot be repaired. If it cannot be repaired, it must be replaced. That is policy language. There should not be a certain number of creased tabs. That number system typically applies to hail hits only.

Great information! I am getting a second inspection Friday because the first inspector missed the temporary shingle replacement in front. They sent me a nice check for the back of my house and the inside damage ( I fixing that myself cause that is my trade).
I did a video walk through with in house adjuster so I believe I won't have any problems on the front side.
I have 4 missing or or broken shingles in front, my bathroom vent got blown/torn off and I had to temporarily replace, and found some shingles where the wind tore over the nail. Also found like 3 obvious creased shingles. Do you think I will get covered in your opinion ( that's just what I found, my roofing contractor going to be here on this inspection to make sure I didn't miss anything and the adjuster gets everything documented).
In short, The have already agree to pay for back over 8-10 shingles torn or missing.
So my thoughts are that is 50% and time you add in front damage I will be well over 60% total portion damage.
I also have few pieces of sheathing to replace and one rafter to bring to code.
From what I understand they will reimburse under supplemental at the end.
Lastly, it's November and I am Tennessee, at what temperature do you put a roof on.
I know you have to do something to heat those shingles up in cold weather, right?
    Thanks for any information.
p.s I have a policy where I get my appreciation back after repairs are done.

Hi Eric! Nice video! How do you handle people who "need help" with deductible. You did mention "waiving" a 1K deductible. This is potentially a no no isn't it? As a roofer we can not double invoice. I am not naive enough to think this doesn't go on. How do you offer this legally? There is no doubt you are a go getter and applaud your hustle!

A new state law makes it clear that it's illegal for a contractor or roofer to waive an insurance deductible. This law takes effect September 1, 2019.

Great it all makes sense. In your past video you said you don't put a tarp for less than 500$ are you talking about all damaged houses in general or that's for the ones that the insurance company will cover

Hey thank you for the content you create, it's quite valuable for some of us :) Just getting started as a sales guy on a roofing company. Would you let a rookie ride with you for a few days? I work with social media marketing as well, and bilingual.

What do you recommend for a small company in regards to getting exactimate? I deal with a couple insurance roofs per year but can't justify 1500$/year for the program as of yet. How do I best tackle those claims in the most efficient way? I'm in Canada so don't think your offer would apply to me. Enjoy your vids man, motivating me to keep pushing to grow !

I feel sorry for those who claim its a scam when its insurance to cover damages including damage only detectable to insurance roof engineers and inspectors.

Im 34 and been in the trades for 14 years on my own for 3. Just curious what makes the machine grow. Thanks for the knowledge on the insurance stuff always wondered how that worked.

I had depreciation on my own home, and the insurance company deducted the depreciation from what they would pay. Should have been $7500 but roof was older ( huge wind and hail damage though), and they would only pay $5,000.

You get 2 checks you still need to collect the depreciation

Yellow Jacket Lawn Care tools man. Tools. Always have spare tools to avoid downtime
. If something breaks just switch to its replacement. You can fix tools at night or rain days.

I am wondering how you get the insurance company to replace the wood as they only pay for sudden occurrence. Soft and spongy wood is generally a maintenance issue. I see them paying for a piece of wood here or there where there is a leak or storm created opening but I have never known them to pay for all plywood on a roof. How do you get this paid?

I did not see on the insurance work scope where the insurance was paying for all the decking you said you were putting on the home. I have not been able to get insurance to pay for that as they say its not storm related so the customers has to come out of pocket. Rarely do we receive O&P. Insurance tells us that its based on complexity, not trades and if they do not deem it complex enough, too bad for the contractor... How do you get them to pay?
