  • We take a fast ride from New Haven to Springfield on CT Rail train #4406 piloted by Engineer/Supervisor Gregory. He let everyone within earshot of the Connecticut River know that he was coming. All stations, interlockings, passing trains, and railroad crossings are identified. It’s about the most detailed ride along this former New Haven Railroad Mainline. (At 0:54 correction. Gregory is CT Rail Supervisor)

    When I was a kid, the ""Air Line Juction" also had a spur (on the right) that began the old "Manufacturers line" (just east of the existing Belle Dock line) that they are now converting part of that into the Mill River Linear trail. The Shore line, at one time, was much further south that ran street grade from Monroe St to the Quinnipiac River where there was a trestle just North of the Grand Ave Bridge & then ran south parallel to Quinnipiac Ave to Russell Street where the shoreline currently comes from the East Grand Ave tunnel. The only thing left of that old shore line is a railroad trestle at the intersection of Quinnipiac Ave & Lenox St. All the properties that were constructed on the old Shore line are built on an odd angle from the street & looking at a map of Google satelite, one can see the old pattern. Thanks for posting this

    Thanks for this video. I rode this line a few times 50 years ago between New Haven and Springfield to catch the Lake Shore Limited to Chicago for the Christmas holidays. I don't remember much, but I do recall seeing the Budd RDC Roger Williams set in the Springfield station. It was still in use, but I'd guess not for long. Cheers from Wisconsin!

    Relly enjoyed this trip. Lots of scenic variety and older turnouts. You can see how manufacturing has disappeared by numerous decrepit and abandoned structures.

    While I will always watch any video presentation that offers a "cab forward view", I greatly appreciate your "brilliant & wonderful" offering as presented. I appreciate & admire your diligent research & historical viewpoint in all that you share with us viewers. This to me is "GOLD", and I thank you sincerely for sharing. I promise to watch your return journey to New Haven tomorrow since I am now close to "bedtime" currently. That said, I still appreciate your postings GREATLY. This is Peter; out!

    I grew up in Wallingford .and rode Budd cars to New Haven. Nice to see the double track has been built. The old station in Wallingford was a great place for railfanning. Across from the station was a manned tower used to control the crossing gates. Thanks for posting.

      The deteriorated viaduct is said to be unable to support more than one train at a time so additional tracks are moot. I need to look into the timetable for replacing it.

    happy to see progress being made on the new windsor locks station, fo you know of any updates to the double tracking of the hartford line or construction of the stations at north haven, newington, west hartford, and enfield? i remember reading somewhere that ctdot was hoping to have some of them up by 2024 but the lack of construction says otherwise. i know newtingon and west hartford are going to use the ctfastrak hubs as their stations but doesnt look like any work is being done

    Wish they looked into electrification on this line. Could really use more regional trains

    • @ABMP4D3
      @ABMP4D3 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      7:05 and at 1:21.11 the New Haven Railroad began to electrify the line by installing the catenary bridges in the 1920's. The depression hit and the project did not go any further. Working north, the catenary bridges stopped at Benton St. and on the northend this was the only one installed that held signals up until the early 90's. Wire was never strung, they had planned to do the Shoreline as well and several 1940's timetables show the Shoreline being electrified on the front.

    So from 42:19 all the way to Springfield much work is needed. The roadbed needs to be double tracked and all the tracks replaced both sides all the way to Springfield. Hartford for a State Capital should be totally embarrassed by the condition of the station both inside and out and also the platforms. The Springfield station also need to be totally redone, All the the metal poles need to be removed and the old sheds taken down. Walkovers needed to get from the station to the mainline that goes from Boston to Chicago and shelters needed so that passengers that are waiting for trains don't have to stand out in the WX or cross active tracks to get to trains. How did we get so far behind compared to Europe or even Japan and China?

    • @rodhard688
      @rodhard688 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Note: Vermonter North pulls in forward. Must back out to get to the line North. Vermonter South must back in to proceed forward South to NYC.

    Tim, I don't know if you're aware of this, but CT rail will be replacing these Mafersa trains with battery operated trains within the next few yours, and I guess Amtrak would use Siemens Charger SC-44s with Venture coach cars; Amtrak trains coming in south of New Haven would probably use ALC-42Es with Venture coach cars!!!
