- We start the day at the popular trainwatching location of Mansfield, Ma on Amtrak’s NE Corridor. We then head into Boston and do some Railfanning of the new Green Line Extension. We ride on the extension in both directions which parallels the Lowell Line Commuter Rail. Amtrak’s Downeaster trains use this as well, and we see trains of both the T and Amtrak. We finish the day railfanning at Mansfield again before I head for home. Some interesting locomotives will be seen during the course of this day.
Hey Tim it's Robert and you did it again with the videos liked it and Happy independence day to you and your family and god bless you and family as well keep all of your videos coming still love them.
Robert.
The trains all love you!
Hello from Kansas 🇺🇸
Philadelphia still has some stations with low level wooden platforms like in the 1830s!
Good mix of trains/trolleys of MBTA/Amtrak. Thanks Tim.😀💚
My son moved to Cambridge in 2018 and we experienced the old Lechemere by staying at hotel near it during our stay for housing search for him after college.. He ended up getting places near Red Line subway... He now lives near Tufts and i was interested in trying new Green even though Red is shorter walk and fastet to go anywhere like Logan or South Station or other Boston sights.
HI, Somerville is not part of Boston, back in the 60's during the gangs wars they fought each other.
I know Somerville, like Cambridge and Brookline are separate municipalities.
The newest of the traditional PCC type trolleys in Boston was the ones made in 1951 that still had a wooden trolley pole that had a bronze wheel at the end to touch the trolley wire.
All Boston PCC cars had metal trolley poles. The PCC cars still running on the Mattapan-Ashmont line were built by Pullman-Standard in 1945. They still have metal trolley poles with carbon insert slide shoes.
I grew up with PCCs in Toronto in 1960s.
27:14 The leading LRV is a Type 7 LRV built by Kinki Sharyo. Those replaced the Boeing cars from the 1970s along with the AnsaldoBreda Type 8s (one of which is the trailing LRV on that train). None of the Boeing cars are in service
The shrink wrapped green line cars are Type 7s, which were manufactured by Kinki-Shayro and have been the workhorses of the green line fleet since 1987 and have been very reliable. The other cars in those consists are Type 8s, manufactured by Breda, and those cars have had more issues than I can count since being introduced, and it got so bad the MBTA nearly cancelled the order, but had to stick with it due to ADA reasons. It was so bad that the T actually went with Siemens for the new Blue Line cars even though Breda had a lower bid on the RFP. Not seen during your visit is the type 9s, which I believe are manufactured by CAF. The long term plan for those is move those to the Mattapan line to replace the PCCs.
Also, the Boeing-Veritol LRVs were retired nearly two decades ago.
Not quite the trolley expert 😀
Yes, the Type 9s are manufactured by CAF. The contract for the 100% low-floor Type 10s was awarded to that manufacturer, and once those enter service, the Type 9s will be switched over to the Mattapan Trolley.
@@williamyoon7660 Hate to see the PCC’s go
Glad to see you back in the Boston area! Also if your interested on my channel I have a youtube short of one of MBTAs redline pullman AA2 horns. Most of our subways have AA2 horns. For commuter rail, if you see a cab car with a gray front door that means it is a brand new car from Hyundai Rotem. Love your channel thanks!
19:16 strange that they have moveable frog point switches, yet no concrete ties. While moving the line to the east to make room for the green line extension next to the Lowell line tracks, they replaced the closer mainline track from concrete ties to wooden ties. It seems MBTA is very scared of concrete ties ever since they had to completely rebuild the old colony lines due to poor concrete tie quality. Only difference being the greenbush line, which still has concrete ties since they were from a different batch… shame the MBTA doesn’t take the more expensive route to save time in the future.. I just wish we can go back to the schedule they had in 2010…
27:25 it was rebuilt by Alstom, I forget who originally built it, but they’re the Type 7’s. The Boeing cars have been retired for a long time.
I wonder if some of the green line cars still show the E going to forest hills/arborway.
Didn’t see any
Ah you can tell this was taken recently since cab car 1722 is shown (it moved up to the north side a week or two ago after being on the south side for a long time)
just realized the title has the date lol, use that then i guess
Most of the T's commuter rail stations will have high and low platforms, but usually during the off-peak, they will have everyone walk to the higher level (handicap) platforms for easier boarding.
Even the end vestibule cars load faster with high platforms than with low platforms. In stead of climbing on, you just walk on or trot on if you're about to miss the train.
EDIT: The Green Line cars with the antennas - pantographs - are actually LRVs or trams (even though locals still call them trolleys!). The only true trolleys left are the PCCs on the Ashmont Mattapan Line.
The MBTA Green Line LRV are the # 3600 - # 3699 and the # 3700 - # 3719 they are the oldest cars as of now but they all have been rebuilt they are the Type - 7 cars the Breda cars are in the # 3800 series they are the low floor cars that’s why you see them m/u with the Type - 7 cars the Breda cars are the Type - 8 cars the newest cars are the Type -9 cars built by CAF USA Inc they are in the # 3900 series CAF USA Inc won the contract to build 102 new low floor LRV ‘s they are going to be the Type - 10 cars numbered # 4000 thru # 4101 the Type - 9 cars can not m/u with the Type - 7 or the Type - 8 cars due to different drawbars on them
The T and MBTA Commuter Rail are the best ways to get around Boston-no way do you drive in Boston. The buses kind of go hand in hand with Boston street planning though-no logic to them. I assume you got a Charlie Card.
i hate those HSP46s with a passion. the new cab cars don't look too pleasant either with the forehead chopped off.....
I get if you're a Yankee fan, but what if you're a Mets fan such as myself? Not in the same division or league.
Sox and Mets fan have a bond. We dislike the same thing.
@@3985uprr so I’m good going to Boston as long as I’m not a Yankee fan. 😁
Stop picking on poor SEPTA. They are doing the best with what they got 😮
Hey I love the Silverliner 5’s and the Bomber Trains.
