I have both the m12 high speed and the dewalt 3/8 because I’m weird like that. I completely agree with how this lineup is, if the bolt I’m removing is rusted or dirty the Dewalt comes out, but most of the time I reach for the M12 high speed just because of how fast it spins, don’t mind having to break bolts loose first with it. Keep making videos please, they tend to come out on my lunch break and I makes my day.

Advertised at 75 inch/lbs and 200rpm. Do you really want more for a tiny transmission pan bolt? They still sell for $80(not made in years). I don't see anything like that. Lately dewalt has been putting out a pretty good assortment of 12v. I got dewalt 12v brushed drill and impact driver before brushless was around, like 10yrs ago it was a good set for its time, but i was pretty disappointed they never really did much w the 12v line up, but lately they have been putting out more tools. I got into the m12 line up with the stubby and high speed after like 2 months of researching compact 3/8 compact impacts. 2 weeks after i got the m12 stubby dewalt put out their 12v compact and its more powerful than the m12. I wish i held off just a little bit longer but there was no mention of the new dewalt 12v compact impacts until 2 weeks after i got the m12. I do like how the m12 stubby and ratchets are streamline with a 2ah, and even still pretty compact with 6ah. Eventhough i have ridgid batteries and their subcompact impacts are smaller than the m12, it just seems pointless with that big chunky 18v battery limiting you in tight areas. The m12 highspeed im not a huge fan of since i live in boston MA and deal w a lot of rust. Any resistance and the highspeed you're using manually even after cracking a fastener free, so i pretty much only use it for installing fasteners. Now im debating if i should go with the m12 extended or the new 12v dewalt extended, whenever its available. I may also get the 1/2 12v dewalt since its more powerful than the m12. No point in having two 3/8. But i am happy with the m12 3/8 stubby. Would be nice for dewalt to come out w a 12v right angle more powerful than the m12. Id be all over that.

I have been using the high speed for about a year now and I think it fits the mechanics job very well, not quite as compact or powerful as my old air operated one but at least I'm not dragging an air line over a customers guards and bumper. It is plenty powerful enough though and the speed is where it's at, in my opinion and experience you don't need anymore torque as it saves you overtightening and breaking the type of fastners you're using this tool for, I have seen the apprentices break a few bolts now using the more powerful Milwaukee fuel (fat head). Like you said you just use the high speed by hand to crack the fastner, such as calliper bolts, and then use the paddle to take it off. I also love how the dirtection changer is flush with the back of the tool, I haven't caught it in tight places yet and haven't had an issue changing directions, even with gloves on.
To me Milwaukee in general is far superior for the mechanic trade where as I have Dewalt at home in the garage as I think in general they are better for builders and the like but still useful for the jobs I do at home on vehicles where I'm not on the clock to meet customer demands

I’ve got a ‘17 WRX and this ratchet has done the exhaust from the turbo back, the intake plumbing from the filter to the throttle body (including a front mount intercooler), a bunch of short shifter upgrades, oil/trans/diff fluids, a full brake job with new Brembo calipers and stainless lines, a meth injection kit, a flex fuel kit, and walnut blasting the intake valves which was >40 bolts by itself. The tool hasn’t met a bolt that it can’t handle and I’ve never ran out of juice on the job with the little 12v battery that came with it. No complaints from this owner!

In my shop we have a variety of cordless ratchets. Snap on long and short, snap on brute long, snap on brushless 3/8, MAC 1/4 and 3/8, ingersoll rand 1/4 small and 3/8 large (this one has been beat to hell since it came out and keeps going) along with makita 12v and 18v. I have found that yes there is room for both, and even more. For example my typical 3/8 go to is the Snapon brushless. For bigger 3/8 jobs (light duty trucks for example) I reach for the Ingersoll rand 3/8. For smaller 1/4 inch sockets I go back and forth between snap on and makita, interior work is typically the snap on since it is a little smaller but in an engine bay that makita just flies through the work like nothing. Each has strengths, each has weaknesses. Also an added bonus to having more than one, is you can cut down on socket swaps, which funny enough can save a lot of time. Think of working on a Subaru and being able to have a 10, 12, and 14mm each on a nut runner, just grab the tool and go. Truth is, you really can’t go wrong with ANY of them. All are faster than doing it by hand.

I've never used anything other than the little 1.5 battery. The bigger one makes a difference for sure but not worth the size hit.

I think ergonomics should be a category to score. The M12 3ah compact battery is what I use on all of mine. I wonder if the 6ah really makes much more beans with ratchets. Idk if you could get used to the block hanging off the end, especially in tight spots.
Lots of options for other Ratchets for future videos. Of course both battery platforms of Dewalt and Makita would be cool. Kobalt is the only 24v ratchet I know of, and then the usual Snap-on and Mac tools, ingersol rand. Ryobi, Hart, and Craftsman for 18v. Husky, AC Delco, and Hercules has for 12v.
    Great video!

Hey TTC. Have you considered holding the trigger down while hand turning from start of test?
I feel like you were loosening them by hand and then hitting the trigger changing the results ever so slightly. It may not be as real to how most people do it but... you could hold the trigger down and then just start ratcheting by hand letting the mechanism take over when it has the ability to. It would at least be the same every time in that the trigger would be down from when you start attempting to loosen the bolt instead of when you feel it get loose by hand.

Hey, my Mac guy just brought by the new DeWalt variant earlier this week. He had a flyer that showed one with a 6" extended neck on it. Would really like to see that.
Personally I like the DeWalt 12V lineup so I've been using and abusing a Mac 3/8" ratchet, and have been quite happy with it. The head size is much smaller than the new DeWalts, and for crawling around in Subarus that helps a lot. However the battery sits at a 90 degree angle compared to the new DeWalt versions. Honestly would have liked to see the Mac in this testing lineup, hopefully one can find its way to you for comparison.

The 12v mac having the battery at a 90° isnt too bad since the mac and dewalt 12v batteries are pretty small. Its better than having a 18v on there. Its comparable to like and m12 w a 6ah. Honestly seems more comfortable than these 12v dewalts w the battery flat instead of at a 90. Im still pretty happy to see dewalt expanding their 12v line up since ive had 12v dewalt for like 10 yrs when i got their brushed drill and impact driver. Was pretty disappointed they didnt do much with it until recently, but what they have been coming out with recently pretty impressive. Their compact 3/8 and 1/2 is more powerful than the m12 if i remember correctly. I got the m12 after researching for a couple months, then like 2 weeks later dewalt announced they were releasing their compact 12v. Kinda wish i held off. But im happy w the m12 3/8 stubby. Not so much w the m12 highspeed since i deal w a lot of rusted fasteners here in boston and even after breaking fasteners free the highspeed still gets hung up and use it more manually than with the trigger. Works good installing fasteners tho. But any resistance removing fasteners even after cracking them free they hang up. New hardware they're great, imagine down south or out west where theres little to no rust they are great, but not so much when you have some rust/resistance.

Not sure if the 18V versions are really worth it.. makes for a bulky experience. At least for the Makita ones, I know the 18V isn't rated for any higher torque anyway. Dewalt does have that powerstack, so that can't be too bad for size.

Hey mate I'm looking at the makita 12v, hoping you could give me some feedback.
Did the 12v version come with the exchangeable 1/4 and 3/8 or is that just a 18v feature?

@@wearsjorge55 The 12V comes with both as well. I pretty much always leave the 3/8" in but it's nice to have the option for sure.

Ingersol Rand cordless ratchets have the same battery configuration as the DeWalt, it’s handy for getting into tighter areas like the front of a transverse mounted engine for a timing belt job.

I have been a yellow tool fan and since I have a Mac guy I can over pay for tools now but I got the 12v ratchet and I love it

I was just thinking about buying the Milwaukee high speed but was worried it was weak and would brake on higher torque bolts. To see you put 200 plus nm threw it and it still works is very impressive.
