Several kinds of dried beans were routine fair, during winter, when I grew up. Blackeyed peas, pinto, large lima beans topped the list. Cooked with salt cured pork or a rasher or two of fatback. Often served with pan fried cornbread (some call it hoe cakes). Home made biscuits for sopping also work well. FWIW .... A few days ago, I checked our stash to make sure we had everything we needed for New Years Day -- Blackeyed peas, turnips greens, cured ham, cornmeal, rice (Hoppin John version) and onions. All set!
Thanks for bringing back memories and a hankering for supper in a few days.
    God Bless. Happy New Year!

@@oldtimerlee8820 I love your stories. I'm not gonna lie as far as mountain gardening , I have more failures then success. Invasive plants and weeds are my problem. Newest goals are fruit trees, potatoes always do fine. Try some type of dry bean next year. I always gardened but this mountain is a mystery to me.

@@offgridamy717 Thank you for your kind words. As to dried beans, we never tried to grow them for that purpose. On the farm, we always had a big garden. Emphasis was on both growing and preserving fresh produce. Freezing and canning where applicable. Plus, short term root cellar type storage of potatoes, onions and such.
It was more economical (includes labor) to purchase dried beans and peas. Stock up, when on sale. While I'm too old to garden, I still stock up on all sorts of dry legumes today. Have a supply of quart and half gallon mason jars just for that purpose. (Best way to keep pantry pests away.)
Sadly, like everything else, prices of dried beans have gone sky-high in the last 4 years. Don't know how the grow vs buy cost comparison would stack up today. May still be more cost effective to watch for sales of dried beans & peas. ???

@oldtimerlee8820 ha I have tons of rice and beans. I told my son I need to transition to alternative gardening . I did make a couple raised gardens. I call my 4x4 my redneck wheel chair. Had to get one with power steering due to blown out shoulders. Life is good.

No problem with Bear sticking his nose in the pot on the stove? I used to pressure can beans when I canned meat when I wanted a full canner. I bet it smells wonderful cooking on the woodstove
