    Love shooting in Monochrome. Amazing how many photographers learned to shoot in Monochrome and many photographers don't like shooting in monochrome. I think it is cool to shoot in every mode and not limit yourself to one genre or another.
    Thanks for the inspiring shots and videos! I have recommended you to many of the photographers I run into and hope they check you out.

    Another quick but maybe obvious tip is to get a good polarising filter or two and use step up or step down rings to save having umpteen CPL's in varying thread sizes.

    Last time I was shooting around sunrise at Mono Lake and a young man wandered by carrying some pretty fancy kit. We exchanged greetings and I recall saying I'd probably switch to hand-held pretty soon as the light improved. "Yeah, but the light's getting pretty harsh then," he said. "So?" I said. "I bet I can get some great stuff to process in black and white." The idea had clearly never occurred to him. :) So use the light you get and open yourself to the possibilities.

    Nice information, thanks.
    Worth clarifying about polarizers: a) It matters where the sun is. 90° to the sun gives the maximum polarizing effect. 2) It's good to do a few shots with different degrees of polarization. Sometimes a black sky looks too much like Mars.

    If you're shooting in monochrome, try a red filter if you want a blue sky looking black, either via a filter or through 'Picture Styles' via your camera menu.

  • @allynscott1983

    While a polarizer can have the desired effect of darkening the sky, it also produces a blue blob (or black blob in b/w photos) when using wider angles. These days, you can achieve a lot of that desired effect in post. For example, Nik Silver Efex would allow you to apply a red filter that would darken the sky (or darken in Lightroom or Photoshop). Or, I suppose you could use an actual red filter if you prefer to capture it in the field.

Good tip about separating the tree from the horizon, something that I sometimes forget to do in my excitement to get an image! All good images, but I did like the colour shot towards the end.

    Lovely video Henry. I know those places on the northern moors with bright cold weather, some snow plus massive contrast. I love the textures of the patterns of shadows created by the snow covered tussocks and boulders. They can make great images even in colour. I used to shoot with ASA 25 slide film and a 35mn Rollei with a polariser. The longer the shadows the greater the texture of the landscape and deep blue/black skies like in the high mountains. Those conditions also make for a beautiful, exillerating day out in the hills or mountains, invigorating the soul. Thanks for uploading, brought back many memories. 😊

  • @ravenfallsphotography6254
    @ravenfallsphotography6254 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The one issue with using a CPL to darken the sky is that you're going to get inconsistent darkening (the dreaded dark blob) on wide-angle shots. While there's no real way around that in color photography, if you are determined to get a B&W shot, you can use a yellow or even a red filter to darken the sky consistently (it was a standard technique for Ansel Adams), or get the same effect with the color sliders in Camera Raw or Lightroom.

  • @donalda760
    @donalda760 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Yellow, Orange, and Red filters could be used to darken the sky with B&W film. I'd assume they would work for digital as well.

    Yep I would go black-and-white for this type of scene. Definitely I would also look at some micro landscape photography. What do I mean by micro not macro look at small scenes capture something that smaller and more interesting that you could use in colour or black-and-white stop looking at the big Vista because in this lighting situation the big wide open landscape is not gonna look great it can but I would go with more micro style Photography a bit like the one with the pylons in the water

    Henry, first I want to thank you for the energy and passion you share about landscape photography, I'm always looking forward to your next video post, inspiring as few! Also, have you tried infra-red photography with blue skies?, It does add drama to a boring scene, but it may not work as well with snow, as green is one of the scene colors that get a huge boost from it,.please let us know your thoughts about IR photography. Again, thank you for such a wonderfully inspiring landscape photography channel! Best!

    As always, a well done video with so much information. I live in California where for most of the year we have cloudless bright blue skies. Those skies may not hold a lot of interest, but they aren't a distraction either. Our vast expanse of California Blue can be used as a strong element in many scenes. For instance, that clear blue is stunning behind a green foreground. In a cityscape it becomes a non-distracting design element when placed behind a skyline. In a scene with a lot of contrast range, it can be amazing what happens when you add color contrast that includes the blue sky. When I have a very strong subject it often is complimented by the lack of detail in the sky. I like the monochrome take that you have on this too Henry. Because of your video I'll have that in mind more often. BTW, it is worth every moment spent watching your videos to see your photographs. You are an amazing photographer and equal to that as an educator. Thanks.
